I used to have this problem a lot! My instructor used to tell me to grab some mane with one hand. This really helped me with the muscle memory and over time I learned to keep my hands in one place.

Agreed, I have found that this technique truly helps with both the trot and the gallop. It gives us the time to feel what's happening underneath and then to slowly adapt to the horse's motions.

A trainer told me to stand in front of a mirror and jump like I'm trotting. And practice keeping my hands still. It realy helped between riding lessons.

It's all in ;your shoulders. Relax and let them DROP and hang. Then your hand will be quiet.

Good coaching! What kept me in line is realizing that not maintaining a continuous gentle contact with the horses bit can result in popping the poor horse in the mouth. Ouch! Yep, I never forgot. Personally, I prefer to sit out the trot.

When I was learning this my instructor git us to balance a whip across our hands (the horses were not scared of this - obviously not a good idea if it might be) which really helped me to focus on stillness in my hands. Need a helper to pick it up off the floor every 5 secs though at the start!!

You really don't need international high level dressage riders as much as you need trainers who can help you with YOUR BODY position, and show you how to relax and let certain muscle groups relax or contract. You need to FIRST understand your own body and get muscle memory in relaxation of areas of the body. Everyone rushes to train the horse first. They forget, the horse knows how to do all the movements. It's the communication between horse and rider that needs the work! Your body tells the horse what to do. If you don't have your body right, you horse can't do the movement. He has no clue except what your body tells him to do. Learn about your body first. Read a book by Sally Swift or get a trainer certified in Sally Swift to start.

@@suzanneterrey4499 I 100% agree with you on that. When it comes to showing, as much as I love it, I view it as secondary with riding and my horses welfare. Though to most of society and the horse world the best way I could word my experience in actually idolizing her was because of that. It wouldn’t matter if she was high level or not when it comes to training, especially because you can have “ amazing “ high-level trainers who abuse their horses and rush everything and still get the gold medals.

I loved my dressage instructors , but my parents got divorced and stole my future. All these years later ,all my dreams and passion ( & talent) were wasted .lt still makes me so upset .lm always so envious for what l tirelessly devoted myself to be one day , but was forced to live without ..... I think your awesome ..... And your horse is stunning and beautifully educated

Hi love your advice videos thank you. This video leaves me with a question I hope you will answer for me please & thank you; it appears you are gripping with your knees and it becomes a hinge and in the first half of the video isn’t your lower legs moving forward and back excessively too? Once you fixed your hands/elbows your leg quieted down as well…I think. Thanks again for all the great advice.

I can’t seem to keep my feet from moving forward and backward when posting the trot. No matter how much I try. I try to keep my body aligned but nothing seems to help. And eventually I get tired and start bouncing on the horse. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Try going for quality over quantity. Sit the trot for a few strides, then go back to posting before you get tired, then back to sitting. This video will help as well: amelianewcombdressage.com/dressage-training/2-secrets-to-sitting-the-trot/
