Nice nice survivor. I hope you preserve it forever. Thanks for posting. I still own my 2001 Intrepid R/T. Of course it has the 3.5 Magnum engine and Autostick transmission. Amongst many other things because it's the R/T. The R/T was the highest trim level. I also owned a 2001 Concorde with the 2.7. It was our 'family wagon'. I was fortunate to have never had a sludge or water pump problem in the 180,000 plus miles we owned it. Perhaps we traded it just in time. Thanks again for posting.

I remember in 2007 a local dodge dealership had a beautiful white 2000 intrepid with a rear spoiler and tinted windows. It also had the infinity sound system. It was so pretty. But even though it was 7 years old it had 192,000 miles and the 2.7. I doubt that car is still on the road today.

I had a 2001 Chrysler Intrepid SE. Canadian model. Major design flaw in the engine was the fact that the water pump was located inside the front engine cover so when it eventually started leaking, it did so right into the engine oil. Mine started leaking about 90k. I realized it right away and had it replaced so no damage was done. It was expensive to replace the water pump because a lot of labor was involved. The radiator had to be removed. And usually if you had the water pump replaced, it was a good idea to have the timing chain replaced at the same time to save maybe having to pay all the labor to have everything removed again. To do the pump and the timing chain cost me about $1600 if I recall back in 2004 or 2005. Sludge was not exclusive to Chrysler products. Audi and some others had problems also. Most of it was caused by uneven heating properties as car manufacturers were going to all aluminum blocks and plastic engine intakes and it was a relatively new engine designs and the different materials had different heating and cooling properties with expansion, etc. My 2.7l never had any sludge issues right up to the 107k I had on it when i traded it in. I only used synthetic oil and did a lot of highway driving so the engine was able to warm up to full operating temperature most of the time. short drives without getting the engine temperature up fully is bad for the engine because it causes moisture to seep into the oil without being burned off. The PCV valve was easy to change. Was right at the top rear of the head. Spark plugs were easy to get to also to replace .All in all one of my favorite cars I've owned. Big, comfortable, great handling and decent fuel economy. I would get 31 mpg on the interstate. Wasn't quick off the line. 0-60 mph in 10 secs flat with a top speed of 116 mph (electronically limited) Once up to highway speed 60+ mph, is when the power came on. After 2002, Dodge started de-contenting them. No rear sway bar, no carpeting/fabric on the door panels, they replaced the armrest flip out cup holder with 2 cup holders and I think there was no liner on the trunk lid underside.

My uncle had a base 2000 Dodge Intrepid just like this one, but it was dark blue, and came with blue cloth seats. He drove it from 2000, all the way until 2011 when a deer hit the side of it, and left a huge dent in the back-left door. It still ran perfectly fine, it was just left with a huge dent on the back-left door, and then he got a new car, a 2010 Ford Taurus later that year, my uncle was planning some sort of "project" on the car, but it never came into fruition, and then the Intrepid was left sitting there to the side of my grandparents' garage for over 10+ years, after several years it wasn't running, flat tires, growing moss on the wheels and the roof, and the battery was obviously dead, it's also likely a few rodents chewed on the wires after so many years, and finally just last year my grandpa hauled it off to the scrap yard for someone to scrap it. It's unfortunate that it happened, but my uncle wasn't doing anything with it and just letting it sit there and abandoned for over 10+ years, so what was the point. Thankfully, I did a full tour of it back in 2019, and explored the inside of it, before it was scrapped.

No. Your engine does not fail if your water pump fails.... The water pump will either leak out of the weeping hole or it will leak into the engine... At that point you will loose heating in the cab and it will start to over heat.. at that point you will know something is wrong... The New after pump is not very hard to change on these 2.7's more so time consuming... I have a 2004 2.7L intrepid that had a broken water pump that needed to be changed... It took me 5hrs to change the water pump... While I was at the water pump I also did the timing chain and tensioner... The car did have sludge build up.. but I poured 2L of Diesel and A/T fluid mix into the engine.. I ran the engine for couple of minutes... And drained the solution... I took off the passenger side valve cover and seen that most of the sludge had been removed... I proceeded to change out the thermostatand leaky power steering pump.. the car at the time had 250.000 km roughly. Now it's at 256.086km And runs strong.. also. On these cars it's important to keep the spark plugs clean of carbon build up.. the plugs will cause the vehicle to run poorley and burn more fuel.. My intrepid was bought for $400 off of a person who was told the water pump was going to cost $1,800 to repair... I'm a mechanic by trade... But don't let the rumors scare you out of driving these fun cars.. these 2.7's are actually built very tough.. it's maintaining them that people lack to do which causes them to fail.

@@trr5291 That's good to hear. Seems like most people say the water pump is the biggest culprit on the engine dying. Along with the pcv system having issues. I dread putting a water pump in, but I will if I have to. Thankfully I’m mechanically inclined.

@@bill6872My 2.7 survived water pump failure twice. You need to catch the leak before it reaches the crank case. The 2.7 is a reliable engine otherwise.

I had a Dodge Intrepid just like this one, only white. It had 80,000 miles on it when I bought it in 2007. I drove the car for 5 years... Mostly trouble-free. Just before I decided to trade it, The cooling system started leaking. The thermostat housing was the problem. I knew about the problems with the 2.7 engine. I just made sure that the oil was changed religiously every 3,000 miles. I also made sure to check the car's fluid levels weekly. I even went so far as to use a black marker to draw a line on the coolant recovery tank to show exactly where the coolant levels should be when the engine was cold. Any variation in this was quickly investigated. It was discovered that the water pump was leaking a little. I decided the cost was too much. I decided it was time to trade up. My Intrepid had 168,000 miles on it when I traded it. It still ran fine! It was a reasonably good car... But I have to admit.... I would much rather have a car that doesn't require an interesting amount of hypervigilance to keep it well.

I have the compliment to the LH sedans, a 1997 Dodge Stratus but I also have a 1984 Ram W150. Apparently the transmission are problematic, but if you actually perform routine maintenance there are no issues. I change my oil every 3k miles I drive it daily, and I have had no mechanical issues whatsoever. When I bought it I replaced the water pump, timing belt, and tensioner since it sat for years. I changed the transmission filter and fluid at 141k miles I believe. It had 136k miles when I bought and now 142k and counting. It handles very well for a family sedan and the seats are incredibly comfortable. I’m tempted to purchase a LH sedan, I honestly like the first generation styling better. There was a spotless 1994 Chrysler New Yorker for sale with 40k miles, but it sold very quickly. If only people would care about their vehicles and maintain them. I forgot to mention I bought my Stratus off of someone’s grandmother and it’s spotless inside and out I got a steal as I only paid $800 for it.
