Not all that bad. In 1965, on the way back home to the mountains from our first vacation trip to the outer banks, our family stayed at a “rooming house” in Wilmington. They would call them “Bed and Breakfasts” today. The place was run by an elderly black lady who could cook the finest breakfast I’ve ever had, before or since. I can still remember waking up and smelling the bacon and biscuits. Great memory of Wilmington.

Ann Chatfield you need to butt out of this one, you have no clue. Princess St. used to be. Still has a convenience store we around here refer to as The Stab And Grab. You get into Wilmington and the street that takes you downtown the typical way is 3rd. You go to the left off of 3rd toward the waterfront and historical homes. As well as multiple businesses etc. But make a right anywhere between Nun and almost to Market. Then head towards 16th and all that and it is night and day different.

You are extremely naive sir. I used to live in the house on Castle St at 2:30 and everyone knew not to go out after dark unless you wanted to get robbed and/or shot. I made the mistake of doing that once and was robbed at gunpoint. I was also an addict back then (not anymore for 11 years) and there were gangs and drugs everywhere, you probably just didn't realize it. However, I do agree with you about good people there too but it was a mix of both.

Love how the jump cuts in this cut out the ~nicer homes~ to fit this “worst part” narrative. This is where I spend most of my time in town. You passed my bf’s house, but cut it out (not that it’s anything special). Just because it’s a more affordable part of town doesn’t mean it’s bad. Rent is still outrageous for what it is. Most of the 2 and 3 bedrooms you passed would still cost you $1300-2000+ a month before utilities. I understand it’s not flashy here, but the sense of community is strong. People care about their neighbors and not in a superficial way. There are way more crime filled areas of town than The Bottom. Even as a woman, I’ve never really felt that unsafe walking around this area by myself, even after dark. Go to Creekwood bro. The Bottom doesn’t even compare.

Are you from here?, Do you know Wilmington’s history?. This place was once a Black MECCA ! And how fucking dare you.

@alejandrathompson7687 3 жыл бұрын
@@itsKanishaxo and for those that don’t want to look it up here is a short summary: so in 1898 the town of Wilmington was a predominantly ‘progressive’ town. Majority of the council men were made up of wonderful critical thinking black men. However, there were some white supremacists mixed into the council, only a few, and they made a plan with a group of friends not in the council to overthrow the men who were black out of the council. They did this by killing them but also driving some out of town. One of them was a man who was very popular in town that own a newspaper company. Since he own a printing company he was able to get his ideas out easily and influence the community. The white supremacist saw him as a threat so they burn down the printing company and drove him out of town... hope this helps and if you can tell I’m a Wilmington townie 😊

I do agree. Went down there to live for about five years. Coming from the city thinking that I was going to have a good living, but it is over rated. They need to learn to support those schools down there and not just on the good side. Look up the history because it's always made to be like it is for the Caucasians and nothing more. For those who are comfortable with living down their hats off to you. But I advise anyone if you're not from there and it is not a great job to go into avoid this place. This place is a big lie and they don't tell the true meaning of the history. If I would have known more of the history that I begin to learn when I moved down there I would not have ever subjected my kids to such behavior and disrespect that was given down there. It was a learning experience for me and believe me I learned never to go in areas like this until they learn to mentally grow and respect what blacks have done down there instead of trying to take all the property that is theirs. But it won't never change because it begins at the top. So many things that I can say about this place not always bad but almost five years four of those years was miserable. And for me it wasn't the crime it was the hate. When it was time to transfer again in the job, I almost left my own shadow so ready to get the hell out of there. Wilmington must mentally grow and realize that it's not only one race that lives on this Earth. If you believe in your kids of color and want what is best for them STAY THE HELL AWAY. LEARN TO TREAT THE ONES FROM THERE RIGHT AND MAYBE WILMINGTON CAN BE ENJOYABLE FOR ALL. STAY AWAY. CRIME COMES WHEN OPPORTUNITIES ARE NOT GIVING AND CONSTANTLY BEING JUDGE. You should know to stay away whenever you come across the line into that town you feel a heavy Cloud over you. I continue to pray for my brothers and sisters down there.

Two things: one, what is your process for determining a 'bad neighborhood' because you drove thorough a historic section, a shopping district, an industrial district, and a high end residential district. I've spent a ton of time in all the places you showed. It isn't dangerous. Two, there are a couple of significantly worse ones in ILM, both pretty close to where you stayed. Plus you did it on a Thursday during the day. So I'm not sure what the point of all this was? Are you are just shaming areas for not looking the way you expect, but you're scared to go to actual rough areas and it was the closest you could find to show your viewers? Or you just heard Wilmington was "scary" and drove though the first low income neighborhood you came to? If your videos actually have a point, and you're trying to highlight crime, then take the advice of some of the other commenters and drive around some of the neighborhoods they mentioned after dark.

I moved to Wilmington from Brunswick County when I was 17 years old I was legally emancipated and I had a section 8 voucher. There is no waitlist back in 2007 or 2008. I lived in one of the worst neighborhoods off sixth Street in Wooster. I went to cape fear community college Rode my bike into the city bus all the way down about maybe two or 3 miles. It was a rough neighborhood back and they been cleaning up the neighborhood a lot over the past 10 years or so Wilmington has become a very desirable place to live. My parents still live in Oak Island in Southport. I eventually moved to Jacksonville North Carolina where the marine bases for the cheap cost of living with being a single parent after my divorce. I’ve been living up here for six years and I miss Wilmington. I bought my house right after hurricane Florence for $74,000 in Jacksonville. Unfortunately I don’t really like living here that much but I would love to move back to Wilmington. I have a really good paying job on the camp Lejeune at the federal level. Wilmington has changed so much but the cost-of-living has been rising year-by-year. A lot of the houses that you’re showing this video is still recovering from hurricane Florence unfortunately. After my divorce I moved to one of the worst neighborhoods in Wilmington two blocks away from Creekwood in an apartment complex called Willow Pond. It had concrete floors and I remember I moved out there and moved to Jacksonville after my divorce was done a gunshot and a stray bullet went through my sons window he was about two years old at that time I never came back I left and I’ve been in Jacksonville ever since.

@American Pride Not just college traffic anymore. All these crappy town houses and apartments that are going up that are going to need major repairs &/or be condemned after our next big boy hurricane bringing in the retirees but no roads to filter them out on. Town keeps letting them build without the proper infrastructure or drainage so we turn into a fishbowl when it rains too much too quickly. I can't get anywhere within a resonable time anymore and for GOD'S SAKES newbies to wilmington, I'd prefer you go 5 mph over the speed limit tbh but is the limit too much to ask??? 35mph and you out here pushing 20. Hi, not sure what the goal was hit but you may have missed it! This was my hometown since I was 11 and the areas you shown from the start was old houses in the downtown district! Which everything downtown is about to be modernized including Castle Street. There’s a lot of building and construction thing going on in Wilmington which is causing a lot more people to visit the city. Then you aimed at castle street which and a few barbershops! Still not catching what you’re trying to point out. Thanks for the recap and tour, I was missing in home town anyway! What you showed especially the area that you say is the absolute worst part is totally off track!(actually the good part of you will) Go into the heart of where all the worse crime is supposed to take place,which you didn’t do. You was on the perimeter of the bottom BUT you didn’t go through it. Btw all those poor looking houses can make it seem like it’s a bad area,you did ok documenting ! Where all the shops are on Castle Street are definitely safe to walk around during the day and at night. I think it's funny he claims there were drug deals, I did not see any visible proof of one. Just people walking and chatting. I would feel safe walking around that area during the day at least. At night is another story but anywhere abandoned at night is considered not the safest lol. Shit even my own nice neighborhood could be considered not safe at night. I've got alligators and other animals that roam near me.

We lived on Church St between 3rd and 4th Streets for a year. I walked with my double stroller and dog in this area at least twice a day. This is not the worst part of Wilmington. I am sure there is crime in the area like any other downtown city, but I would have never continued to walk in dangerous parts of the city with my kids if I felt threatened. It's obvious you're not a local because you're not driving through the worst part of town at all, I'd feel perfectly safe walking through these areas and have. The worst part of town is Creekwood. Period. As a 16 year old young girl I was dropping off a co worker at 11pm after a closing shift and he wanted me to drop him off on the corner off 23rd. I refused and told him I was raised better and would take him to his door. When I was pulling out of the neighborhood I was pulled for being white and had my car searched because I didn't belong there...guess it didn't matter to the cops that sat a the church and saw me turn in that we were both in our Taco Bell uniform, I turned in with 2 people in the car and left with 1, me. They ripped the entire inside paneling out of my car doors and when my dad helped me put my car back together he told me to NEVER let a cop search my vehicle again without a warrant. That was 2004 and nothing has changed except both me and that coworker went and got degrees and he works in the hospital and I work in international logistics/supply chain. Also the peace sign was weird and if you were in one of our upper class neighborhoods someone would probably call the law on you or assault you for videoing them. Perspective..

Would never happen because 1/4th of the cities total population are students, between UNCW and Cape Fear. The students heavily support the local economy and work all the shitty jobs that other people don't want. The city rather have these kids parents pay $2000 for rent, than setup a rental program. The housing authority has a 20mil renovation budget for a single one of their properties. Their money is going there.

The video goes down Castle Street, which was bad in the 80s and 90s, but is no longer considered bad. It’s mostly commercial and you didn’t show the right side of the street where there is a radio station, day care, and a beautiful black church, among other small businesses.

I have lived I Wilmington for 40 years ! I grew up here the crime here has raised a lot in the past 5 years but the areas you have shown in this video are just where a lot of the older people live who just want to be left alone. You want to find the worst parts of town visit Princess St. Garden Lake Estates or Creekwood. But essentially crime is everywhere now days because drugs are running rampant. And they want to take guns away so only the criminals have them. I love my town and it breaks my heart for it to be on this list growing up I don’t remember so many shooting and deaths the hardest drugs I heard of was weed. It was safe to play after dark. I had no clue what sex trafficking was ! Was it really not as bad in the 80s and 90s or was I to young and blind to see what was going on around me.

I know Wilmington well and the fact is that while there has been some gentrification appended to the historic district some things haven't changed much. The city has a history of annexing to build the tax base. It isn't the same Port City it was in the 1960s and 1970s. Areas of outright blight are not too large. But, they have the same drug and crime problems so prevalent everywhere. Proximity to the ocean always brings development. It just doesn't distribute itself to all socioeconomic demographics.

Yooo.... You the Port is where it's at. Especially the SOUTHSIDE. We have it all here in Wilmington. I'm born and raised here. Left and came back. Every city has its areas but the B.O. ..... My playground since around 10 years old.
