Just some advice--When you have a situation like this where an animal dies from unknown causes --PLEASE don't bury them on your farm. It might sound cruel but some viruses and diseases can persist in the ground, and even drain into local water sources. It's much safer to have a vet dispose of them if you can. Totally understand the need for memorials and wanting to recycle, however, sometimes caution is needed.

Just make sure your vet does NOT recycle the remains to the dog food companies! (yes this is a common practice, and on the label it's called "animal digest" and is a disgusting thing to think about being in kibble!)

In Canada, farmers have two methods allowed by law to dispose of larger livestock that die from possible disease: mechanical heat composting or vet. I think the vets have to heat compost after they do their autopsy.

Just a kind sidenote that vets like Dr Pol often open up livestock to help him see why they passed. I understand keeping them from the other animals but sometimes ya gotta find out.

Elliot Smith was born to a man with one of the greatest hearts I've ever known. While certain governors wouldn't bat an eye, you took every measure possible to save that calf. He was loved every minute he was alive and not every animal gets that. RIP Elliot!

Morgan, I saw it in a comment on the last video, but I think its a good idea to keep some colostrum on hand and give each newborn calf a bottle full just to make sure they get it in case they miss their chance from mom.

It's the reality of farm life. We have to let go as much as we open up. Painful but isn't it better in a way that they finally had that peace we wished for them to have. The only thing we can do is to do our best to make things comfortable for them before they go.

Oldie time farmers literally shared their homes with their animals living above the animal quarters. Maybe that was before Farm dog protection. 😊 or when losing their one or two animals meant starvation. Eliot gets the oldie traditions. Love your heart of hearts. ❤

Sorry to hear that Elliott did not survive but you made sure the life he had was as comfortable as possible. I think he also appreciated you made sure his last moments outside in the sun. Additionally you are a responsible farmer for waiting until you have all the results from Elliott's necropsy before sending the rest to pasture. You're doing what you can for the health of the herd. Totally understandable that you want to save Betty White for a Charlet Calf. Might I resubmit my suggestion of Bea Arthur or Blanche Devereux.
