I have been doing sublimation for at least 17 years. I would recommend if you are starting out go ahead and do 11x17. You'll have no problem doing shirts that way. Epson id definitely the way to go. The cost of ink has come way down the last couple of years.

It seems intimidating but do your research and it’s becomes more easy than vinyl. I do tumblers and shirts now. I get a little bummed when I have to use vinyl now 😂. Like Tanner said in a different video, if you can learn your cricut - you can learn sublimation. So happy to see MGL teaching sublimation. I’ve missed them, I learned everything I needed for my cricut with them.

If you get into it, I would suggest getting a printer that prints at least 13x19. Hate my sawgrass 500. Don't get sawgrass, the ink is stupidly expensive. It will not cover a full page. Meaning you don't actually get an 8.5x11 print. It will print up to 8.5x14 in, but not cover a whole page.

I'm very interested in doing sublimation mostly for shirts, but Other things also. This is strictly for personal gift giving etc. My issue is I'm with you I want darker colored shirts. I've got black shirts that I purchased that appeared to be sublimation printed. I've been under the impression that professional sublimation printers put down a layer of white 1st and then put down their colors. Isn't there a way for us to do that? Or would white simply blend into the color of the shirt and not stand out?

Sooo.. I watch every MGL video so not sure how this one slipped thru the cracks lol I hadn't seen this one before. I came across it researching about sublimation. I have a question, when u do transform a printer into a sublimation printer, is that permanent? As in, can you turn it back into a regular printer, assuming you get all the sublimation ink out of the printer? I was just curious, my husband recently bought me the epson and although I am SUPER EXCITED, I cant help but fear that I won't do enough projects to get my money's worth out of the printer (& ink) transforming it into a sublimation printer ..Also, do u have to use "sublimation paper" ? Can u use regular ink jet paper? Any advice or clarification is greatly appreciated! Thanks so much MGL for the videos and great tutorials on everything.

I converted an Epson ET2720, it was very simple straight out of the box. I ordered ink that had the proper nozzles for installing the inks so that I would not have to deal with drawing the ink into a syringe from the bottle and injecting into the printers tank, and viola it was ready to go. A couple tips no matter what you buy: Buy new not used- I have read that you will never be able to get all of the inkjet ink out of the tanks and so you will have problems with the sublimation ink saturating correctly. I can't think of anything else on printers...but remember as in all things new to us KZbin is your best friend!!!!

Your sublimation is also only as good as your substrate. Don't try subbing on any fabric less than 65% polyester. I have tried cotton/poly blends with Sub spray. It just isn't the same. And, it WILL fade when used with poly/cotton blends. The ink doesn't hold as well, and fades after a couple of washes.
