This is a different sort of video, but we want to be as transparent as possible about how we fund this channel, and 2024 is definitely an interesting time to be a sponsored athlete. As always, we are so so grateful to all of you for watching these videos - without KZbin there's little chance we would still be doing this. We are lucky indeed ❤️
As professional mountain bike racers, racing bikes and sharing our adventures is how we make money, which is pretty darn cool, but comes with its own unique set of stressors. Especially in 2024. Today, we’re going to pull back the curtain a bit on how we make this lifestyle, and this channel, work, and discuss how the current state of the bike industry is affecting us. We have some big changes coming for 2024, but whatever happens, we look forward to sharing it with all of you.

Good for you guys taking the high road in this... I often feel like, when the marketing budget gets cut, the Athletes suffer such that the folks making the real money do not have to take a compensation cut... Business often sucks, and is often unfair in my experience, and the compensation is rarely commensurate with the talent, effort, and production of the "workers" (athletes in this case). Also, good for you guys that you basically run your own show, and are highly diversified-it is a lot of work I am sure, but in cases like these you do benefit.

As a Manager of a UCI MTB Team, dealing with 12month contracts for our sponsors/partners/staff and athletes, i can tell you that it’s a hard way live vs a stable 9-5 job. The security in employment is very tenuous at best. Our team didn’t continue, and we had this decision at the very last moment, stressful on the one hand and very emotionally difficult to navigate. Most teams sign contracts 10months into a period to secure the new staff/riders and sponsors, but as a South African team we faced larger economic issues. Anyway, i know how you feel. I’m in that same place without the other income stream like or patreon. I have a coaching business which has been on “idle” which i have to kick start. At first the task seemed daunting but now it’s exciting filled with possibilities! Looking forward to more of your adventures you weirdos, keep pushing on. We love your weird asses ! I hope a lot of people see your video and see what is what, that you are not on a magic carpet and although you love what you work you still have to WORK. Still have struggles and still have stress. You chose this and you deal with it as best as you can. You get other sources of income, eather KZbin or bikeshop or selling stuff, or teaching or whatever. It's like that for pretty much half the workforce. I'm not gonna shed a tear for an industry that is non essential business and that is trying to make money of quantity not quality. A lot of people have two jobs, a lot of families do not work at the same work space (same factory or same company) just because if the company goes down they will have other income. Also every job has it's good and it's downsides. Why is everyone not thinking about the downsides. Downsides get you, they will get you, no matter what, so use the upsides as best as you can as downsides will eventually get you. Summer tourists are the main income for a lot of business and every winter those business suffer. And they are trying to overcome by doing stuff. So bike industry is the same. Unfortunately for the bike industry is that this is not a necessity. Even if you get a bike you will get one bike and you will ride it for years. I want to stop with this get new and throwing away perfectly good product that may need some service. Stop it. If demand is low well sorry, but that is life (talking about the companies). Do something else. Migration was used for thousands of years, same with this.

It is nice to see and hear your perspectives and unfortunate to hear of your challenges. I understand your need for diplomacy, so I will lean in a little harder. The bike industry (wholesale side) got really greedy and unfortunately downloaded their mismanagement onto their retailers, whether it was fear mongering about inventory shortages, and the need to over order due to potential continued future scarcity, especially from the big, more influential brands. Or, the double kick in the gut of 2023 when brands like santa crus, specialized, trek, rocky, norco, etc...undercut their long term retailers and put their bikes on super sale right at the beginning of the season, absolutely killing the margin for their retail partners. But let's also acknowledge the brands that just didn't have the market share and reserves to survive, who were impacted by the supply chain issues and who did not nhave access to components, suspension, and generally parts at all to build their bikes because the big kids were demanding it all from themselves. The industry will bounce back, and we will all continue to ride bikes as much as possible...well, I will. Nice job diversifying your sponsorships and revenue streams, well done, that is a lot to manage and can be very stressful. Good luck in 2024

From the consumer point of view, the bike industry/shops have been really exagerating with prices for bikes/parts during (but not only) the pandemic. People were not able/willing to pay that kind of money anymore. They thought it would go on forever. Big mistake.

As a shop owner and former Niner dealer, I've been thinking a lot about you for a bit. You're right the industry is in challenging times, but you two will bounce back. The industry for many, became extremely greedy and some lost their customer support, and that is definitely another facet in all of this. But I've always believed that when one door closes, another will open. At any rate, I wish you well, and know that you have been watching all of this and will roll with the punches and find another way. If I wasn't so hesitant about all of this, I would also offer to help sponser you... but we just had a 100 year flood, so lots of roads and bridges are out of commission at this point. At any rate, I'm anxious to hear your announcement, and know that you are still training hard behind the scenes. Lastly, THANK YOU for being upfront about all of this, it not only allows everyone to understand the situation, but more importantly it shows us the types of people that you are. Onward and upward!!

I just hope the bike industry doesn't go belly up before I get myself together. I own a custom built Schwinn S29, and even though I've built a decent trail bike for what we have in southeast Michigan, I still think that my skills have gotten to the point where I need to purchase an "actual" mountain bike, something that is on my level. I got into mountain biking last April, and the hobby of building up/upgrading and maintaining bikes in 2020 (during the pandemic), so I'm getting into this pretty late in the game. It's also worth nothing I turned 38 this past November. I hope things will get better so that I can further explore my new found hobby.

The issue is in the pricing tbh. You shouldn't need to spend $2500 to get a bike that won't break down any sort of blue trail. That turns a lot of people off. And it just got worse after COVID. And sometimes spending more money doesn't equal a better product. My 2021 Carbon Instinct 50 from Rocky Mountain (Nearly $6000 CAD) had a bunch of issues with it.

Cycling is gate kept. Instead of encouraging someone to grab a $200 bike and see if they enjoy it, the entire industry is obsessed with boutique bike shops, elaborate fittings, unnecessary ridiculous riding apparel, massively painful "pro" "racing" equipment, and $3000 - $10000 bikes. Good luck with all of that

Good Luck to the challenges ahead or all of us. The BICYCLE INDUSTRY is HURTING is because no on needs a new bicycle. I myself think that at this moment, the economy overall is the worse it has been since 2008. People just don't have money for any luxury items right now, and that includes bicycles. We are all collectively in survival mode right now. People can barely afford their house payments and food, much less enough to pay for a new $3k bicycle. Even a new $1k is pushing it financial wise for most people. At this time, no one needs a bicycle, not even us serious bicyclists needs a bicycle. Therefore, it is very simple, the ONLY reason Bicycles are NOT selling right now is because no one needs a bicycle. We all already have 1 or 2 bikes too many. I don't care how much you discount these bikes, they still are not going to sell if no one needs a bicycle. Then it gets worse. Not only do any of us need a new bike, there are just too many high end bikes in the entire inventory of the world. If one were to really analyze bicycle buying history, and you will see that the people who buy high end bikes are few and far between. I don't know what the Bicycle Industry was thinking when they started stocking on there floors so many $5k and $10k bikes. At least 80% of of any sales floor should be filled with bikes that are priced between $400 to $1k. Even a $1k bike is quite an investment for most people. I do believe most people don't want to deal with their old junk bikes if they can get a new shiny one for $1k, but no way they will pay $5k, or even $3k to replace their old $1k bike. The only thing now that will save the Bicycle Industry is for another Pandemic and Lockdown to occur, but even then, don't expect 2021 sales levels, because like I said, we all already have our bicycles and don't need anymore. Also, good luck selling all those $3k bicycles in the next pandemic. At least in 2021, there were many $500 bicycles on the sales floor. Speaking for myself and my local riding group, we all already have the bikes we want. My local riding group is a a pretty serious DH mountain cycling group composed of about 100 riders. We all own at least 4 bikes each to include Downhill, Enduro, Trail, and XC Mountain Bikes. At most you will only see like 10 new bikes in the next 3 years between the 100 of us. Think about that, out of 100 SERIOUS riders, that is only 3 new bikes a year for the next 3 years, and that "10" is the best case scenario. I myself am good for the next 10 years (if not longer). I will buy new frames or wheelsets if something breaks, but I do NOT play to buy any new bikes for at least 10 years. So in Conclusion, the BICYCLE INDUSTRY is HURTING is because no on needs a new bicycle.

I hope these market forces stabilize. I will say it makes sense after the 2020 explosion. I got into this sport because of the pandemic, bought a Mtb in 2020 and then a road bike in 2022. But I will say I don’t see replacing either anytime soon, I ride both weekly. Not much has changed as far as geometry in mtb since 2020 IMO. But even with that, I am buying sealant, chains, Zwift, gear, bottles, saddle bags etc. I’m even considering a power meter crankset. So IMO even if the boom time is over, these companies should see higher sustained revenue. And I feel as though I have turned into a lifer and could see upgrading my bikes in the next 5-10 years. Sad but hopefully the overall net growth can support more industry careers. Thanks for posting affiliate links.

The bike industry has always been like moving sand. It ebs and flows, always has, always will. Bike shops got greedy just like all other industries, even food. Now that things have settled, people are back to doing what they used to do. They're all throwing their dummies out of the pram. You have to remember you can't have it good 100% of the time, suck it up and keep moving forward.

By & large, demand for bikes plummeted because manufacturers got greedy and started charging extortionate prices. The average person still wants (or needs) a new bike, but can no longer afford anything more than a budget brand bike. Budget brands don't generally do sponsorships, so...

Great video and totally explains the survival of privateer pro cyclist. You two are awesome and I for one enjoy watching your videos, especially in race footage. It sad that the bike industry is in the state it's in today. I attribute the state of the industry to greed. Frame and component manufactures continue to raise prices above and beyond what recreational riders can afford. Of course, we all want the cool stuff, but in reality most weekend warriors don't need the top of the line anything. I ride Mtn. Bikes, Gravel Bikes and am a Roadie. All of my rides are middle of scale bikes and they all serve me well. Again I don't race competitively and if I did; I'd probably fare OK with the gear I have today. Keep up the great work, ride hard and fast and looking forward to seeing your new 2024 ride and adventures.

Increasingly in this country we have people such as myself who are "independent" contractors. I don't think there's a guarantee for most people that they will have a job at any given moment. I see KZbin content creators as being in this category. You get the freedom to do things the way you want for the most part but NONE of the safety net. It takes courage to be in this arrangement! Best of luck going forward!

I wish someone would figure out how to market mtb races to normies; turn it into a spectator sport. I always thought that if they deployed drones to follow racers, better camera angles on the ground, etc. Would help bring more monies into the sport.

Sorry to hear the news, especially from Niner. Iv'e long wanted a Niner and bought an Air9RDO in 2023 because of your's and Clint Gibbs association with Niner. Ive worn Primal for years and glad you joined with them and happy to hear they are staying with you. I am sure you guys will do well; it may be a tough year but you're are likable couple and seem to appeal a loyal audience that will support your sponsors, you have a great channel and can provide value to many companies in the bike and related industries. Keep training, keep racing and you can count on support from me. I often think what you guys might do as your racing years wind down; health and fitness content perhaps, or broader outdoor lifestyle content. Like many followers, I look forward to your videos and and know you will crush this challenge and emerge stronger than ever.

The bike boom actually started before the pandemic. It was in 2017 to 2019 that here in Asia we saw demand for bikes rise. We also saw something a little unexpected, a shift from Asian manufacture back to America. The lowering of business tax rates in America, and new tariffs directed against mainland Asian manufacturers made North American production more attractive, and stronger economic growth in America during those years caused stronger sales. Things were looking quite good, until the pandemic hit. Supply chain issues (even bikes made in America use lots of Asian parts) made some bikes and components hard to get, which drove up prices even before inflation began to take a bite. Orders for bikes had been placed mostly before the pandemic, as supply contracts are usually long term, and when the gates finally opened again, lots of bikes were being shipped, leading to excessive inventories. On the other side, the new American administration promised to abolish the previous administration's business tax reductions, and end the tariffs against manufacturers in mainland Asia. This caused turmoil in manufacturing, catching many industries with their pants down, no longer being able to afford American operations, but, due to zero COVID policies in mainland Asia, unable to return. In addition to that, the pandemic saw the American administration add more than 40% to the money supply, diluting the value of the dollar, and causing inflation in dollar-priced commodities, which included oil, aluminum, steel, and other materials. Inflation in America reduced American's spending power, making unnecessary purchases too expensive, while the issue with inflation in the dollar caused large increase in the cost of production in Asia and shipping to North America and Europe. It isn't only the bicycle industry which has been affected.

Always sad to see people lose jobs or struggle, best wishes to you, other athletes and everybody else who does not deserve for this to happen. On the other hand, the "big bike" and even "small bike" companies created this issue on their own by ever-increasing prices, making non-compatible standards to squeeze more money out of customers, promoting only their best of the best, making people think they need that to ride. I get it, they are companies and their goal is to make money, but making the already expensive hobby unattainable for the majority of the population and expecting everyone else to pay though their teeth for artificially segmented and price hiked gear? They had it coming. Hope ebike industry crash even harder so that the entire thing gets rebuilt from scratch, hopefully better

Good deals? No way, prices are way out of my budget. Add on the ridiculous race fees, hotel fees, food costs, etc... and this is a sport not accessable for many people (meaning worse competition as poorer but better atletes choose other sports). 2024 will be way worse.

@@okayatbikes1909 It wasn't hard to recognize that once in a lifetime pandemic that forced the entire population of earth outdoors at a significantly higher rate would be temporary. It was also pretty obvious when it would slow(people going back to the office) so I feel like you are really stretching it here. Not to mention that bike sales are still higher than they were pre-pandemic by a good margin so it is pretty safe to say mismanagement and greed were major factors.
