The Ringcon that comes with Ring Fit Adventure is an interesting take on what has been a standard tool in the exercise world for a while now. There have been a lot of people who were curious as to how the Ringcon itself worked and if there was anything to it. Today we'll take it apart and see how it works and how it is actually connected to an old Nintendo peripheral from the 80s.

Ring Fit Adventure has easily been the most effective way to keep me having fun and staying interested in working out. I picked it up a bit before Pokemon Sword and Shield came out and I've had an absolute blast with the game and have been seeing actual results (having more energy, being more flexible, and reducing my gut). The game has such a great way to incentive you to keep going and making progress, gaining levels and XP and learning new skills, and I've really been enjoying the character designs and story elements. The writing is great too. I can't recommend this game enough! With all of that being said, it's really neat to see what makes the Ring-Con tick! Great video man!

@@deoxysn310 Sony tries different things constantly, way often than most people realize. -Dual analog sticks and L2/R2 back buttons on Dualshock 1. Overall that controller's design has been the template for every standard controller since then. -Pressure-sensitive face buttons of DS2 and DS3. -Eye toy motion sensor camera for PS2 which is the same technology as Xbox Kinect and even today PSVR works on the same principle. -DVD and Blu-ray formats which have been the dominant form of physical game distribution. -The Sixaxis gyro controls of the PS3 controller. Today PS Vita, Wii Motion Plus, Dualshock 4, Switch and Switch Pro controller implemented that technology after Dualshock 3. -PSP Go cradle accessory which is the same exact thing as the Switch dock. It allows you to play PSP games on the TV wirelessly by connecting a Dualshock 3 controller. -The touchpad and the lightbar on Dualshock 4. Both improve games in subtle ways. The touchpad is also confirmed for the PS5 controller. -PSVR. The new frontier of innovation for video games. Sony was two generations earlier than Microsoft and Nintendo in the console market (Microsoft confirmed they are not interested in VR for Xbox Series X). -The PS5 controller is confirmed to have two innovations in the form of adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. Sony hinted there is also more. Then there is all the stuff going inside the consoles themselves, making them attractive to both consumers and developers, and Sony has evidently been great at that considering 3/4 of their consoles sold above 100 million.

Great video! It was really cool to see how the flex input works with the game. I’ve been loving the game and the workout it gives. I am still curious though, how does the multitask mode work with this Ring-Con? The multitask mode with the Ring tracks your activity when the game is closed, the Switch is completely turned off and the Joy-Con is disconnected. How does it store that data? Is the Ring storing it? The Joy-Con? Or is it somehow transferring the data to the Switch while in sleep? Curious to hear if you or anyone else knows how this works.

@ReavoEnd 4 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure it's the Joy-Con. My best guess is, Nintendo pushed a firmware update to the right Joy-Con which added the low-power multitask mode. RFA puts the Joy-Con into this mode when the user enables it, and the Joy-Con uses its battery to keep track of input from the ring.

How exactly do those flex sensors work? Does the electrical resistance of the sensor change with its flex? Or does it generate an electrical current when it's flexed?
@dojomojomofo
@dojomojomofo 3 жыл бұрын
I believe the Power Glove used an optical flex sensor, and it was a third-party accessory - but I think the sensor in this looks like a strain gauge, which is seen on the balance board as well. It can detect very slight flexing, making it great for use in digital scales.
@oogiesmuncher
@oogiesmuncher 2 жыл бұрын
Thats 100% a strain gauge, not a flex sensor. The notches cut into the steel on either side of it direct the stresses(and thus strain) right through the sensor so it gets a clearer reading. It measures the compression and tension at that point when pulling or squeezing the ring,
@Warunicorn

This is extremely fascinating and ingenious. Great job, Jon! A couple of things to note: When the Ring-Con is in Multitask Mode (where you use the Ring-Con away from Ring Fit Adventure, turned on by pressing the Joy-Con's stick down), the A and B buttons toggle sound and rumble respectively. This is especially fascinating to me, since I didn't know the two could be mutually exclusive as there's zero rumble that I could feel when the sound is toggled on while the rumble is toggled off. Since the Joy-Con rumble is a glorified sound radiator, I at least thought I would feel something. As for the game itself? I lost 5 lbs. so far (was 165, now 160) over the course of a little over 60 days at 1 hour sessions with about half of that exercising. I'm currently in World 20 at level 152, difficulty 30. (I hate squats. Hate them with the white-hot intensity of the sun. If there's one thing this game does, it exposes your weaknesses. Front presses? No problem. Squats? Ugh.) Seeing muscle definition form and fat melt away slowly is pretty neat. It goes without saying that what you put into the game is what you get out of it, not to mention lifestyle changes in general, like eating healthier food choices. Like going to the gym, it's a game of constitution and your motivation to continue. It's not easy but worth it.

What I find interesting is that information is being sent to the joycon attached to the ring. To my recollection, I don't believe anything else currently on the market does that: The grip is simply for ergonomics (and the player number light displayed on it is just a mirror), the MK8 wheel is gyro, etc. (Not including the joycon charger, which... charges.) All these are just shells to house the joycon, where the joycon does its own measurements internally. I can't think of any device that generates its own information to be sent through the joycon to the switch. I could be entirely wrong, but I believe this may be the first device to utilize this! Simply amazing!

First, I thought it must just be a simple fix sensor at the top. Then, I thought that it wouldn't flex enough there to get the accuracy it seems to have. I did see 4 leds and 4 identical led 'slots' on the ring itself and my first thought is 'huh, clever, they are using light to transmit data rather than connectors'. But then I seen that those slots are just transparant plastic to let the led lights shine through. After this video I noticed that the ribbon cable connects to the edge of the controller and behind that (at the bottom) are actually the connectors.

The Ring-Con would be great for a dodgeball game, you could grab the ball by squeezing the ring and throw by opening. Other movements could be used for special throws.
