Item 6) if you can travel “last minute” (within 1 month of sail date), you can cruise for a fraction of the usual cost. Caveat - you may only have a guaranteed cabin which means you can’t choose your room location on the ship, but you are guaranteed the room category. Also, because your departure date is within 90 days of sailing, your cruise must be paid in full at time of booking. To summarize, GREAT deals can be had if you just want to cruise and aren’t picky about your room location while all other amenities and services are still available to you!

We just got back a couple of weeks ago from our first Alaska cruise. It was incredible. We already want to go back. Tropical cruises don't interest us, but give me Alaska anytime. Your tips are spot on.

While I agree about the balcony if you're only ever going to do 1 Alaska cruise, but we'd rather book an inside or an Oceanview because it's cheaper and we don't spend a lot of time in our cabin anyways

6. Budget plenty for excursions which can end up costing more than what you paid for your cruise!

A cruise to Alaska is actually not that expensive. An interior stateroom for two people was about 1700 for us and we didn't do excursions. The only reason it would be so expensive is because you were not trying to budget and booked a balcony or higher, booked excursions, and/or went during the busy season

Wrong you don’t have to spend 4 to 5 thousand a person. . We spend 1100 dollars for a person with the balcony 🎉🎉🎉🎉from Seattle back to Seattle with glacier Bay

Booking last minute or Guarantee cabin would be less expensive! Also need to factor in the excursions $$. I saw very low rates for interior cabins…very tempting!

I took my Alaskan cruise in Aug and the warm season led to a lot of ice in the water so the ship would not get close to the glaciers that was advertised. Havent been back yet but Ill go earlier.

Definitely won't book a Alaska cruise without a balcony. Will wait til I can afford the extra expense.

Well, most of what you’re saying is true I completely disagree on the cost. We were able to go on a Holland America seven night cruise out of Seattle round-trip and saw seven parts including glacier Bay and it was only 1200 per person for balcony.

However, if you sail early in the season, be aware that there could be too much ice for the ship to be able to visit certain areas.

Great question. It doesn’t matter. The ship typically does 360 in front of the glaciers. So all sides get to see them. The ship sails into the bay, so portside sees everything first. Hope that helps. When are you cruising to Alaska?

We did the Alaska cruise in May. Weather was perfect. But we did ours on a small ship, nor one of those giant ships. Loved it. It included Glacier Bay, and some other bays rhe big ships don't go into. We watched baby seals being born. We were in ports when the big ships weren't, so we didn't have the crowds the big ships bring.

@icedteamama176 that was Cruise West, a small ship company. It no longer exists. But I believe Oceania does Alaskan cruises and they're a smaller ship too. Being in part in Juneau for 4 hours while all the big ships were in before they left made us so happy we chose a small ship. It wad like a zoo in Juneau. When they left it was heaven. That was the only time we were in port with them.

Never vacation does not equal snow

As someone from SK, Canada I never had ANY desire to pay for a vacation somewhere that includes snow. However, I changed my mind for several reasons: 1) I wanted to take a cruise that didn’t involve a flight, so that left Alaska (roundtrip from Vancouver) 2) I have lots of warm clothes since I previously lived where it was super cold so I won’t have to buy a whole new wardrobe just for a cruise 3) I booked the cruise during a cruising sale and got over $600 onboard credit, which means I can enjoy venues for “free” (by using the OBC) that are usually extra charge to other passengers 4) I don’t have to be on the snow and am fine to see it from afar 5) I get to see animals in the wild that I don’t usually see (Dall porpoises, Humpback whales, Orcas, Sea Otters, Sea Lions, Black Bears, Grizzly Bears, Hawks & Bald Eagles) 6) the ship is the destination for me - just having someone catering to my everyday needs like meal prep, making my bed, etc is a gift of luxury for me. 7) Enjoying high end cuisine prepared by Chefs at any meal, that I would never be able to afford on land is a treat. And I can eat as much of it as I like or try it without extra charge. 8) celebrating a special occasion on a ship makes it more memorable. I’m cruising for my birthday! 9) it will be my partner’s first cruise and I’m excited to see him enjoy something with me for the first time 10) we chose the Princess ship, which is the original “Love Boat” from the TV show back in the day so it’s a nostalgia thing for me to be on board a ship that I first saw as a child and always wanted to be on so I really don’t care the ports of call
