Re: 2021 4Runner Limited vs , Lexus GX460 & Land Rover The 2021 Toyota 4Runner Limited combines the best of off road capability, luxury and on road handling in a unique package that fits more budgets than mega expensive Lexus counterpart and Land Rover. Therefore, a recommended comparison would be the luxury version of the 4Runner, the 2021 4Runner Limited which we just purchased here in Colorado, from our friends at Phil Long Toyota in Trinidad Colorado. The real challenge for your comparison: Is the 2021 plush and luxurious Toyota 4Runner Limited as capable as the 2021 the Lexus GX460 and Lad Rover? Unique ONLY on the 2021 4Runner Limited are: PART 1: Luxury 1) Perforated leather-trimmed, heated and ventilated front seats; 8-waypower-adjustable driver’s seat with memory function and power lumbarsupport; 4-way power-adjustable front passenger seat 2)Perforated leather-trimmed 40/20/40 split reclining and fold-flat second 3)Optional 3 row seating leather trimmed seats (which we have) 4) Leather-trimmed tilt/telescopic steering wheel with audio and Bluetooth®12hands-free phone and voice-command controls 5)Front and Rear Parking Sensors 6)Advanced Pedestrian Alert and auto breaking detection 7)Upgraded 15 speaker JBL system with subwoofer, with Apple Play & Android 8)Dual zone automatic climate control with air filter and second-row vents 9)Optional Automatic Running boards (which we have) 10) Chrome door handles with touch-sensor lock/unlock feature 11) Windshield wiper de-icer PART 2: Mechanical Major Differences: 1)Full-time 4WD with 3 modes: H4F high speed 4WD H4L high speed lock 4WD L4L low speed lock 4WD H4F is for every day driving with full time 4WD at any speed, any road conditions When needing more traction and grip on slippery surfaces the H4L & L4L high/low speed Torsen® limited-slip center differential with locking feature provides more traction by locking the front and back drive axles “as one”. 2)X-REAS Sport Enhancement Suspension Rides, drives and performs like our Lexus RX450h, awesome ride yet extremely well handling on the Highway and winding mountain roads cornering more as a sports car than a heavy SUV. Just returning from Rocky Mountain Park to Colorado Springs where we live, it handled extremely well on steep tight cornering mountain roads and highway speeds on I25. PART 3 Limited also has: Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) Lane Departure Alert (LDA), Automatic High Beams (AHB) Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P)- Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian S Retractor Downhill Assist Control (DAC) Advance Traction Control Trailer Sway Control Etc Etc Summary, from daily commute to long highway road trips to winding mountain passes to off road trails, the 2021 Limited does it all in comfort at a fraction of the cost of its Lexus counterpart and Land Rover With 2500 miles: Best/Average MPG so far Highway 24.5/17 mpg City 15.9/11 mpg Note: We live in Colorado around 7000 ft above sea level and do quite a bit of mountain driving. The transmission does a good job when we downshifting manually, but have found 2nd gear a bit too high or too low the majority of time. A supercharger and retune would help in both fuel economy and overall performance. We miss out 2005 4Runner v8 which had 180,000 miles on it that we traded in on our fourth 4Runner, the 2021 4Runner Limited. An 8 speed transmission would really help optimize performance and fuel economy, but not available, thus a supercharger and retune appears to be our only option. As we get more miles on our new 4Runner we will have a better understanding of real World fuel economy. Thoughts? Cheers, Colorado Springs, CO

The cost comparison is quite a bit deceptive here. The overwhelming majority of the features that the $70k Defender includes are available on a $58k GX (from heated/cooled seats, premium lights with leveling/autobeam, sunroof- list goes on). Mind you, the Defender does come with more modern features at that price such as a HUD and newer style infotainment, but this comparison implies these are closely priced when they really aren't. A $50k Defender comes so stripped down it's hard to consider it a luxury vehicle and the next trim up is $70k, which says a lot. The GX comes with a lot of standard features and most of the GX's are sold around $58-60k.

I am shopping for a New SUV, have been driving Lexus GX and LX SUV's since 2003. Test drove the LR Defender 110 6 cylinder, and was surprised by how well it handled and accelerated, but the dealership near me has a bad reputation with regards to customer satisfaction and treatment, and LR vehicles are not exactly renowned for reliability and dependability. I put a lot of mileage on my vehicles (drive 32-35 K miles annually), so reliability and dependability are important. My neighbor, who owns a 2020 LR Range Rover Sport, advised me against purchasing the LR, as his has left him stranded on the Highway, requiring a tow on three separate occasions to date. He is trading his in for a Lexus. I also rented a BMW X-7 for a week to test drive it, came away with the impression that it has too many sensors and electronics for my taste, plus it is not body on frame which I prefer, as they hold up better long term.

Having said that I'd certainly take the Lexus over the Defender, mainly because of it's dependability, which Land Rover has proved it does not have. This is one time that I find I have to depart from Nathan's choice.

As much as I sing the praise of the older GX all the time as a great daily driver version of a 4runner (better approach angles than the new ones, etc), I love how Land Rovers look on paper. I would have bought an LR4 over my GX470 in a heartbeat if they were as reliable. If I could afford one, I'd love one of these defenders. The problem is, I need it to consistently take me home and I just dont see a guarantee of that. Please, Land Rover, learn a thing or two from Toyota about reliability and build a better offroading vehicle.
@shaunbava18014 жыл бұрын
If rover cared about reliability they would have never stopped using the 4.4 v8. Even the lr4 was pretty reliable compared to the current generation and it came with a 5l v8 that grenades itself due to weak timing chain guides. Which is really bad because the 4l jag engine already had the problem and they fixed it in the 4.2 and 4.4. It seems like ford fixed a lot but as soon as JLR was allowed autonomy they went back to doing questionable things.

There's no way that front bumper helps with MPG. Since that V8 is just such a gas guzzler. I'd buy a used GX first. More possibilities

Does the defender have a full frame? Or subframe?

Wow, had no clue the Defender could tow so much. Complaint: apparently the new Bronco, even with the 2.7EB, will only tow 3,500lbs... The Ranger tows 2x as much with a weaker engine and a bunch of shared components like the gearbox. I don't think I'll get one either way (wish I had more of a use for one around here), but if I were interested, that would really be on my mind. 3,500lbs isn't enough, even for occasional loads. With the Defender, if I was in a pinch and our truck was busy doing something else, I could easily transport our 28' camper back and forth from the storage lot. Bronco (or Lexus in this vid)? Nope.

I didn't look it up, but I thought Andre of this channel did one of his brutal uphill-towing tests, well into last year, on the Defender when it was just released. He concluded it aced the test. So yes, the Defender is a much more stout platform than a Jeep, and the Bronco is really designed to outdo Jeep.

I've had enough seeing/reading reviews of the Lexus GX. It hasn't changed in years. I know more about it then I ever cared to know. And that it STILL...doesn't have Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, shame on Lexus. For $70K, I'd look at buying a Landcruiser or Lexus LX570 off a lease (driven by a housewife or company executive).

Land Rover's lack of reliability is well known. I do not care whether it is better than the Lexus in some ways if one cannot use the vehicle as one pleases because it needs to visit the shop very often.

It gets better gpm than advertised, my wife was getting 19-20 on the highway and 17 combine. The fact that the land river has a smaller hybrid motor, and it gets close to the same as the Lexus with a V8 and 6 speed tells me junk. Not to mention it is a Land Rover, AND not to mention TFL went through 3 of them for testing lol

@@agt155 the Lexus out performs it, and it’s not in the shop every week, she totaled it about 6 months ago and we upgraded to the LX570.
