Somehow, when we talk about greatest basketball players of all time we forget the GREATEST NBA player to ever play the game. He battled politics, racisms, prejudice and he was training his team while we played. Ladies and gentleman! The ULTIMATE WINNER - Bill Russell!

Russell knew how to trust his teammates on day one! And he played to his strengths while putting his ego aside! It took MJ 7 seasons to do that! The only stat that matters is a W or L. Everything else is just a distraction! Russell IMO is a mix of Tim Duncan and Dennis Rodman!

By the way everything you said here was absolutely facts. And by the way he's also a mix of Draymond Green and Kevin Garnett and I say Draymond Green because he would rebound the ball and then push the pace a lot right after when he gets the chance and that's what bill did back in the day a lot, when a power forward or a center is able to push the pace like that you're able to get out in transition a lot quickly for fast break points and Draymond tries to guard all positions on the switches and Garnett was very much the same way they were bigs who defend at the perimeter and not just around the paint and the rim and that's how Bill played too as well.

Nah, Bill Russell played on the greatest NBA TEAM ever. Suffice it to say there were 10 HOF players who were his teammates, four of which -- Cousy, Sharmin, Jones and Havlichek -- were named to the NBA's "50 greatest players of all time" list. It was the Celtic TEAM that won those 11 titles, not solely Bill Russell.
@lwmson
@lwmson 4 жыл бұрын
@Litty 3 Titty Bill Russell was a great player, but he wasn't God. There would have been no way that he could have created the exceptional talent that his teammates like ill Sharmin, Sam Jones and Bob Cousy possessed. Cousy was considered to be the Magic Johnson of his era. He was a three-time all-American player in college, something of which Russ obviously had nothing to do with. He was a 13-time all-star and a one time NBA MVP. As for MJ making Pippen, well I have to disagree with that. The year that Jordan went into "retirement" to play baseball, Scottie had what was a arguably the best season of his career. He led the league in steals, averaged a career high of 22 points per game, and a career best of 32 percent shooting from the three-point line. Moreover, he finished third in league MVP voting that season. I'm not as ignorant of basketball as you may think.
@lwmson
@lwmson 4 жыл бұрын
@Litty 3 Titty Bob Cousy came into the NBA in 1950, seven years before Russell, and he made all star in ALL of those seven seasons PRIOR to Russell coming to the team. He could have made the HOF on the strength of that alone. Russell was said to be the first black coach in pro sports, but as "player-coach" he was really just more or less a figure head with Red Auerbach being the actual coach. Which brings me to another point. Auerbach was arguably the greatest and most innovative NBA coach ever who also played an integral role in Boston winning 11 titles. Mind you, I'm not saying that Russell wasn't a great player. He was without question one of the greatest to ever play in the NBA and he was indeed highly instrumental in Boston winning so many titles. All I'm saying is that he didn't win all of those titles by himself. The Celtics won the most titles because, as it stands to reason, they had the greatest collection of talent ever assembled on one team.

Less teams means more talent per team since the talent pool isn’t diluted and distributed very thinly besides the occasional super team. Players today get rested, there are thirty teams, some of them even try to hit rock bottom intentionally for those draft picks.The greats of any era are truly great, I love to watch Kawhi Leonard and Lebron for example, they like anyone else can only play against the people who show up on the court that night with the rules established in the era, my complaints are in regard of the state of the NBA today, not the players within it.

Less teams means less talent and 80% of the players were real life plumbers. Also Russell played with 9 other hall of famers in his team, LOL! I have Russell in my top five cause I think he is top 2 or 3 best defenders ever, but these 11 championships are praised too much.

Air 23 you have NO idea how much work Bill Russell did to lift his teammates to his level of play… how did the Celtics keep winning with Russell playing with different Celtics teams cause of different players? How did they win the first year without Bob Cousy? How did they win in 1969 against the Lakers when they were supposedly written off and shouldn’t have lasted past the Eastern Conference Finals? Never underestimate Bill Russell… you haven’t done enough research. And he did it without being able to wear a new pair of basketball shoes EVERY game (*cough* Jordan!) - MJ was incredible but you PLAY THE GAME TO WIN and THAT’S IT. In that case, BILL RUSSELL is the Greatest.

Bill Russell was actually the leading scorer on his winning college and Olympics teams. He adjusted his game to make the Celtics successful. People love saying that Jordan has 6 Finals MVP awards. Yet, the award itself is named after Bill Russell, not Jordan. Russell won his championships across different Celtic personnel, and was even head coach. Jordan never won without Phil Jackson’s system and Scottie Pippen to lead that system.

Russell won 11 titles with the Celtics, the most ever by far. But at the same time he had by far the best supporting cast of any NBA star in history. Ten of his teammates were hall of famers, four of whom -- Sharmin, Jones, Havlicek and Cousy -- were named to the NBA's 50 All-Time Player list. Before there was the "Dream Team," there was the 1960's Boston Celtics. True, they may have lost games when Russell was absent, but when you're a star player and have such an exceptional high quality of talent assisting you (essentially a de facto all-star NBA team), it's easy to see why they won titles just about every season. Add to that, Russell had Red Auerback as a coach, who was arguably the most savvy and innovative NBA coach in history. It was actually Auerbach who coached the Celtics when Russ was player-coach; Bill was more or less a figurehead. Not to take anything away from Russ, because he was obviously a great player and perhaps the greatest defensive center ever, but those 11 titles should be attributed to the Celtic team as a whole, and not solely him.
@stephatkinson8606
@stephatkinson8606 4 жыл бұрын
The Celtics had great teams, but they wouldn't have been any rings without Russell. All you have to do is look at his 2nd year in the finals and up 2-0, he hurt his ankle and didn't play the next three games. And all those great players couldn't win a game without him? Auerbach wasn't the coach, Russell was the coach, unless you think Auerbach was calling him during the games... one last thing, 3-4 of those players who were all stars actually never made an all star team, yet made the hall of fame.

@@stephatkinson8606 Thank u! Auerbach is overrated as a coach. If u were around at that time u would know that Russell and Oscar had more to do w/the emergence of the modern style of play than Auerbach. Russell innovated Defensive Rotation and the quick outlet pass w/o which the Celtic Fast Break couldn't exist. The Fast Break, ofc, introduced new principles of disciplined floor spacing. Oscar innovated the modern Half Court Offense exemplified by executing set plays. He also innovated Player matchups/mismatches. He ofc developed the xover and dblxover to beat an opposing player on a drive to the basket., and don't forget the Fadeaway Shot (contrasted to the Fallaway one legged shot--Sihugo Green, Wilt, Dirk). Like Russell, Oscar innovated both Strategy and Tactics to the game. He and Russell stand head and shoulders above everyone else in terms of BB IQ. In the early 60s, in natn'l broadcasts, Chris Schenkel would interview and ask Oscar to Explain the game of BB for the audience. Anyone ever called Bird, Magic, MJ to explain the game of BB? Everyone is so quick to belittle Russell. But as u imply, y did this collection of talent that was clearly better than that of every other team of their era, and w/the so called greatest coach all time, repeatedly fail to win a single conference title against lesser talented teams? Sam Jones's ans is that they didn't have William Fenton Russell!

In Jordan's day there were 30 teams and you had to play 4 or 5 series to win the championship. Plus the Celtic teams were loaded with hall of farmers. All of the starting 5 are in the hall of fame. As far as LeBron i don't think there is a wrong way to earn a champion because let me ask this didn't LeBron play his butt off playing 82 games even though he had help did he still not play because people act like LeBron did nothing in Miami and was just there doing nothing and what others fall to realize is that making it to the finals is an achievement on its own especially if you drag two teams rosters that had no business in the final what so ever being there and another thing that people forget that Michael Jordon had help to to win all of the 6 champions with Scottie Pippen on his team, in all six champions

@@christianhenry4173 wym I do Jordan’s claim as the goat is the most complete argument there is for any player he was damn near perfect and check off every criteria for the title ever so here let me show how by breaking it down great by great because might has little to no flaws in his game/career as a whole totality: -If you want to call bill Russell the goat that’s fine but he didn’t statistically dominate on both sides of the floor like mj did and isn’t as overall accomplished or has as many records as mj -if want to call wilt the goat that’s fine he was a freak of nature and dominated the regular season and has chunk of the individual nba records to himself but didn’t dominate as much or thrive in playoffs or won at all as much as Mj did - if want to call kareem/Kobe the goat that’s fine but they weren’t always the definite alpha or leader and true best player in all of there championship teams like mj was (side note: just like kareem had his own ungaurdable shot with the perfected sky hook mike made/ his own ungaurdable later in his career specifically the 2nd three peat with the perfected fadeaway jumper which was hard for even great centers to stop because it was so quick and effective -if you to call lebron the goat that’s fine but he dominate on both sides of the floor to extent that mj did and didn’t win as much and literally has moments costing his team the chip in the finals (2011,2007,2014) and mike again surely dominated on both sides of the floor (10x scoring champ and 9x defensive 1st team w/ a Dpoy) -if you want to call magic/bird/shaq/Duncan the goats that’s fine but again simply they didn’t win as much and again weren’t always the alpha player on all of there championship teams and wasn’t called the clear most dominate or best players of their eras they had share the titles, shaq had to share the title of best player w/ players like Kobe, Tim, wade, bron etc while mike didn’t he clearly dominated and was truly the best player of his era the 90s decade -lastly if someone somehow chooses Hakeem as the goat cool, but remember that Hakeem never won as many as majority of the other candidates listed was never seen as the clear best player in the league till mj left and wasn’t as dominant So you see no matter what argument you make for any other player/candidate Jordan is simply the only one the clearly checks off every criteria -dominated the regular season✅ -dominated the playoffs✅ -most decorated ✅ - truly dominated his era✅ - transcended the sport globally✅ -always the alpha of his team✅ -clutch and had a tireless work ethic✅ -unmatched killer instinct and skill✅ -has many records under his name ✅ -GOAT✅

Bill Russell won a championship in his first year and by year 7 had 6 championships. Jordan also in 1991, bad mouthed the Pistons when he was team was up 3-0 in the ECF. People r so quick to belittle Russell's offensive capabilities. They make the most outrageous claims about MJ'S productivity. He has the most scoring titles, the highest scoring avg. the greatest scorer ever, blah, blah, blah. Well, he also has the highest FGA at 26.5--more than Wilt. Wilt was shamed into reducing his scoring. U cannot be serious to believe that MJ was a better/more prolific scorer that Wilt or Kareem. I want u to drop ur bias for a moment. Think of how many people say that if the Bulls at their prime played Russell's Celtics at their prime (62-64), the BULLS would wipe them out, r something to that effect. We will never know for sure, but on paper the Celtics actually have the advantage--much more firepower, much better dribbling skills, ball control and protection. MJ was the only real firepower on the Bulls. Russell had Hondo, Sam Jones, and Heinsohm. Harper couldn't really dribble the ball well, much less beat the Celtics Full Court Press. MJ never played against someone his size, and the few times he did against Reggie Lewis, Lewis often blocked his shot at the release point. The Celtics had 6-61/2 Satch Sanders and 6-6-1/2 Hondo to defend him. Both of them much stronger than MJ's weak ass. If Satch could guard Elgin, whose dribbling ability and sheer strength was way above that of MJ's, y do u think he couldn't guard MJ. MJ and Bulls are clearly in new territory here. No, I didn't forget Rodman. Believe me, Heinsohm's (6-71/2, 220 LBS) responsibility is to screen Rodman off the Boards. Now back to Russell's offensive impotence. The tables r overwhelming in favor of Russell in a matchup against the Bulls 3rd rate, molasses slow stiff ass centers. Russell would run them into the ground, and, oh yes, dribble past them too. U r really silly if u think that in a series, Russell couldn't add 10-12 pts more a game to his avg. Another way of looking at this contest is to ask if the Bulls vs Celtics, could actually cover the Vegas spread. I would think u have enuf sense to realize that they wouldn't be able to cover it.

@@sd.2528 I have no problem w ur choice. I will say though that i am disappointed that so many people think that Russell's actual player to player matchups were against scrubs. It's MJ who actually played against scrubs, most of whom were really dumb. I don't really like ball hogs (but I am not privy to his practices nor locker room--so he knows much more than me who will fold in crunch time). I really never liked his game but unlike most, I think his 1986 series vs Celtics was among the NBA's best ever. He proved to me that he could actually play PG at an elite level with discipline, showing more court awareness than many overhyped PGs. I was truly impressed that in the 63 pt game, 3-4 other Bulls were in dbl digits My personal opinion is that he is the G.O.A.T SG thru 2000--Absolutely without question.

@@freddytorres3609 Not trying to say that your opinion is wrong, but take into account all the scrutiny he had the endure those years in Boston. When you didn't even know you could get home after the game. Plus, every time he faced Wilt when it really mattered, he did just enough for his team to win.

The real answer to whether Jordan could lead a team to a championship while playing on it is NO. He never did it. In fact, Jordan wasn't as successful in the front office as Bill Russell either.
