Why France's Caesar is Urgently Needed on The Battlefield:
France's Caesar artillery is one of the most efficient vehicle-mounted defense weapons used by the French Army. Now, this gigantic gun is already owned by other countries, such as Denmark, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Morocco, and the Czech Republic. Aside from these countries, France's allies, including Ukraine, are also relying on it to defend their lands. During the ongoing conflict with Russia, Ukraine soldiers are clearly giving Russian armies a hard time because they have Caesar artillery units.
Easy to use
The soldiers spent just two weeks training how to use the 19.5-ton Caesars at a training facility in France. The gun is mounted on a 6 by 6 truck, which can travel at a top road speed of 50 mph and an off-road speed of more than 31 mph with to its 245 horsepower engine. The truck, which is 33 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 12 feet high, has a cruising range of 373 miles and can fit in a transport aircraft to be flown to its destination.
It’s fast
Once the vehicle is parked, the Caesar is ready to go in less than 60 seconds, and it takes less than a minute for the 155mm/52 caliber ordnance, semi-automatic gun to fire six shells at a target that is between 3 to 31 miles away. Less than 40 seconds after the last shell has been fired, the Caesar can have driven off. Shoot, then move on.
It’s powerful
The gun's detonation chamber, or the section of the system where the propellant charge bursts, is 23 liters in size as opposed to the M777 towed howitzer's 18 liters, so more propellant can be loaded into it, which causes the shells to be expended faster and farther.

I'm bored so I'll destroy the jokes about the military history of France There were 53 major conflicts in Europe. France was a belligerent in 49 of them, and the United Kingdom in 43. Of the 185 battles France has fought over the past 800 years, its armies have won 132 and lost 43, leaving only 10 battles undecided. Giving the French military the record of victories in Europe and therefore in the world. France is the nation that has participated in the greatest number of wars and battles in the entire History of Humanity. Over the last 800 years France has fought over 200 years against England, over 150 years against the Germanic nations, over 190 years against the Spanish/Portuguese, and against many other nations yet. Often these wars were fought against France in numerical inferiority in front of coalitions of several nations aiming at destroying it. France, a warrior nation par excellence, the strategies deployed by these generals are still being studied today, notably Napoleon Bonaparte's campaigns. On all lands and continents France has shown the world what it was worth in combat. Battle of Auerstaedt (1806), 25 000 French against 60 000 Prussians, French victory @t Battle of Patays at 1 against 4, French Victory. . @t Fort Carillon, 3600 French against 18 000 English, French Victory. @t Battle of the pyramids, 20 000 Fr against 50 000 Mamelouks, French Victory. @t Austerlitz, 73 000 Fr against 86 000 Russians and Austrians, French Victory. @t But it is also the battles of Bouvines, Verdun, Soissons, Marigan, Castillon, etc.... And those of the Prestige: the battle of Camerone, 62 French legionnaires against 2000 Mexicans. @t Bir hakeim, at 1 against 10, 3 700 French against 37 000 Germans/Italians. @t And so many others... But France is also the one that colonized England in 1066, this French country for centuries to the point that 40% of English words are of French origin. It is the Daughter-Elder Nation of the Church, because the first barbarian King of Europe to have converted is none other than Clovis I, King of the Franks, it is therefore the protector of Christianity, even within its national borders one feels its destiny. The one that dismantled the 900-year-old Holy Roman Empire. Enabling Germany to be born 65 years later. The one that allowed the independence of the USA by fighting in America against the English. The land of the "Dynasties" Many European kings have French ancestry. Under Saint-Louis France is the richest and most populated country in Europe as well as the most developed intellectually and artistically thus influencing all of Europe. The Amerindians nicknamed the King of France the Onontio Goa "the greatest mountain of the earth" at the end of the Seven Years War, overwhelmed then by the French defeat and their fate to throw at the hands of the English who will exterminate them thereafter. The one that dominated Europe for several centuries making its royal court the most frequented and appreciated by the Kings of Europe. The country of humanism and human rights and the first modern true European democracy. But France is something else: France is the second nation in the world to have made the most invention and discovery. It was the 2nd largest colonial empire in the world, stretching across all continents and oceans. It has the 2nd largest maritime space in the world behind the USA and could legitimize certain zones classifying it then world number 1 in maritime possession across the Globe. - It is the largest nation in the European Union in terms of area. First European agricultural power and 4th in the world. 4th world military power and 1st European. 5th economic power in the world. Permanent member of the UN alongside the USA, Russia, China and England. 2 nd industrial and commercial power in Europe. France is also the 3rd country in the world to have manufactured the atomic bomb. France is also a Space Power, 3rd nation to conquer Space, the largest space budget of the European agency. This is france

You missed one of the most important feature of the gun : because it's heavily computerized, you can ask the gun to shoot 2 to 3 shells at the same target in a group-shot. I believe it's called a "tir malouines". Basically, the gun will look up and shoot one shell very high, so that the first shell has a higher, longer travel time to the target. And then very quickly the gun will lower itself for a lower, shorter "direct" fire. The 2-3 shells will then land at the same time on the same target and obliterate anything that was there. There is footage of such fire mission here : watch?v=tTdDm4ucBB4&t=36s

I admit I was a little disappointed that the Caesar replaced the AUF-1 on AMX-30 chassis (armoured and tracked). Now when we see the costs of purchase, maintenance, speed, range, air transportability and precision, I better understand the choices of the French army. A howitzer is worth only by its shells and I believe that these are particularly precise but are very expensive. It seems to me that the US military based in Europe is in the process of purchasing this weapon system. But they are more likely to copy and make their own version. Like the Brutus (funny Caesar and Brutus: Tu quoque fili ) which still seems significantly inferior to the Caesar, as historically.

You've mixed up the light CAESAR 6x6 "NG" which is still in development with the heavy CAESAR 8x8 which is in active service in Danemark. The "NG" is an updated version of the light 6x6, it will keep it's light weight, stay air liftable, affordable price and good mobility. Because that's a big part of what makes this artillery system so effective, along with it's range and large choice of projectiles. The hidden game changing thing though is the entry of the new French vehicles (Jaguar, Griffon, Serval, Leclerc XLR, CAESAR...) into the era of infovalorization through the new SICS information system. That's a huge advantage, a revolution on par with and in parallel of the use of drones.

@marc0110j
@marc0110j Жыл бұрын
This is fine for harassing or counter battery fire but key role of artillery is fire support in during attack or in defence against an attack. If the artillery is "scooting" all over the place it isn't able to provide the crucial fire support when needed. Survival is important, but if survival becomes the overarching concern, then the artillery cannot fulfil its primary role. Ballistic radar detection is only the first element in the counter battery kill chain. Detecting an enemy gun position, and having a weapon system available, in range, to respond is much easier to imagine than it is to implement.

This FR-US must admit. The current CAESAr is one of the best military equipment. Artillery-wise, probably the best, when compared to other systems which could be superior in the long run. At least, for 2 reasons: battle-tested and very reliable (other systems tend to have many maintenance issues, quite quickly). So, it's agile and robust. And it can fire most, if npt all, NATO ammo, including the best from the US. Now... The problem is: production rate. The French try to fix this, but il will take time. Esp. when you already have to supply other countries which purchased the system prior to the RU/UKR war (btw, kudos to countries agreeing to delay deliveries to supply Ukraine first). Yet, the "haute couture" model doesn't apply anymore. It's a major shift in France, and a risky one. They have - let's be honest - the best fighter jet. Still, so many countries buy F-35s, rejected by the US Armies themselves. France is not a huge country and must choose wisely. Including the fact they spend a lot on their nuclear deterrent, esp. with top notch submarines. To then be stabbed in the back by allies... Now, there could be a real incentive, here. Before the UKR/RU war, they were the third arm exporters. Just behind Russia, USA being the first (makes sense). Now. When the world sees Russian systems fail so miserably (like S-400, yet bought by Turkey, a NATO country). The French may understand and build up on their expertise.

I don‘t know, I‘d prefer a self propelled Haubitze like phz2000. This thing looks like its breaking apart after firing. Further, it needs hydraulic stuff to shoot which takes time to get the hell out of your firing position. Lastly, there‘s no protection for the crew as they operate in the open

These systems are convincing: if use is massive and if aeriene domination is assured. Without these two conditions, after two shots, they will be reduced to a pile of scrap.

The doctrine used is 2 or 3 shots (that land simultaneously) and then run away to the next position No more than 60 or 120 seconds in the same place

It is good for out of area missions under good weather conditions like Africa etc. If it comes to crew protection and cross country mobility I would chose the PzH 2000. There is a good reason why German Artillery decided to get rid of field/wheeled artillery fighting a peer enemy.

"Good weather conditions like Africa" bruh... But the chain vs wheels is a long debate.

@@hermes6910 Well said. Therefore headlines like“Cesar is the king of the battlefield“ are either on purpose for clickbaiting or without deeper understanding of the topic like you perfectly explained. In Germany we say comparinf apples (i.e. PzH2000) with pears (Cesar)

Well, wheel vehicle require less fuel, less maintenance and are lighter than there track counter part so they’re more adapted to certain tactics.

Tracked vehicles are more armored, thus more able to take counter battery fire or to be used in dangerous zones. But they are less mobile and more expensive. France needs an easily deployable artillery piece, which will be used for operations in secured areas, so the ceasar makes more sense. For the maintening cost of one pzh 2000, you can maintain several ceasar, so more firepower for the same price. You need armor only if the ennemy has long range artillery itself (and good recon to know where to shoot), and/or aerial superiority, and airstrike capability. Oddly enough the russians can provide neither, so in Ukraine having armored artillery, is more of a burden than an advantage.
