That was one of the cool things they've done right in the Acolyte. Seeing live-action cortosis was pretty exciting to see once you figure out what was happening. First I thought he had sliced their lightsaber emitters somehow, which would've pissed me off but when the blades reactivated, instantly i went "oh shit, he's using cortosis."

It would also depend on how thick it was. Admiral Galak Fyyar had a battle suit made out of cortosis and lasted for quite some time in battle with Kyle Katarn, even after Kyle destroyed his personal shield. The armor malfunctioned and exploded, killing Fyyar.

This episode felt like a good step up from the first 4. Like, this episode not only showed a pretty great long fight scene, but it also finally showed how bold it is for killing off some of their major characters, in quite a gruesome way. And ngl, that Sith was pretty badass and quite competent compared to May. Like, this episode finally did the things I kinda wanted to expect from a acolyte show, even surprising me at times. Still, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying this episode saved the whole show for Me, the first 4 where still pretty terrible, but, if the last 3 episodes keep the same momentum going from ep5, this could potentially save this show from being awful, and end up being Just OK for me. But I’m not expecting anyone to agree with me

Probably better thay yhey didn't given what just happened. I'm just personally invested in the story and how it plays out. I believe it originated as a kind of chainmail in I, Jedi. And then full armor in Jedi Outcast though that variant didn't short out lightsabers (presumable b/c it was a video game)

Choreography was solid, fight flow was a bit iffy. Too much talking and turning off the lightsabers. But overall an enjoyable fight, this show could’ve been much better if the writers went the John wick way. Basically to give a simple story with well choreographed fights!

I’m reading Star Wars: Thrawn: Alliances, and Anakin just fought droids made with armor that was weaved with cortosis, and it did the same thing. It clicked for me there that that’s what the helmet was made of. Although in this book, the armor was doing the same thing to blaster bolts, so the armor should be useful against more than just lightsabers

As nice as it was to see Cortosis in live action, The Acolyte still dropped the ball by NEVER MENTIONING WHAT IT WAS. Only long time SW fans who have read the EU would know about it, new fans would be stumped and asking questions. They could've fixed this issue by featuring the Cortosis material in an earlier episode to explain what it is and what it does. Like a Jedi interrogating someone about why they have raw Cortosis and the padawan (being confused) asks what is so bad about it. Easy quick fix. edit: Well, at least they mentioned it now in episode 6.

OK, you're just looking for a reason to be pissed. What is the saying again? Oh yeah: Show, don't tell, which is EXACTLY what happened here. We see that he's got some material on his arm and head that not only resists, but also deactivates lightsabers. You're idea of taking 10 minutes to explain what the material is and how it works, fits nowhere in the show, and I doubt you'd expect Qi'mir to take 10 minutes out of the fight to go all "Well, aktully, the reason you can't hit me..." Those with media literacy observe what's happening. We don't need to know what the material is called if we know what it's capable of.

It actually makes sense if it exist beskar. Then other rare minerals or actually beskar was already found back then and some had the knowledge. Where else would mandalorians get their knowledge from? It had to origin at one starting point or its not impossible that others get the same knowledge. Thats not bad actually.

It's not beskar. Beskar doesn't short out lightsabers like we saw on screen. Mandalorians have known about beskar for thousands of years at this point, even in canon. Beskar can only be found in the planet Mandalore and a couple of it's moons. It blocks lightsabers but it doesnt turn them off fully. Only cortosis does that. You just don't know about it bc it's only rly ever been mentioned in old books and comics. Nothing that would be on disney plus has ever even alluded to it existing. And to a lot of stat wars fans nowadays, "if it's not on disney plus, it doesn't exist"

I thought Qimir was just cutting through their saber hilts to disarm them, but then they worked again a minute later, so it was confusing. maybe they could’ve referenced cortosis at some point in the show before, or had a character make the realization and communicate this to Jecki, allowing her to exploit that knowledge?

Referencing cortosis is unnecessary to see what's happening. They show it enough times on screen that it's pretty easy to reach the conclusion of "the lightsaber shorts out on the armour" without having to have someone stop and lay it out for everyone. I realised it was cortosis not because I knew the name cortosis or read I, Jedi years ago but because I noticed armour shorting out the lightsaber. You don't need to immediately have all the information labelled. These are basically fun details for people who notice them, and may get explained later, but there's no reason to stop everything to explain that in the moment.

@@DatapadBriefs - but when you change the way lightsaber duels work, I think you need to explain it a bit… maybe Sol has what should be a coup de grace, but the armor short out his lightsaber, giving Qimir the killstrike instead… but Jecki jumps in to save him, and Sol yells for her to avoid the armor, or smash the helmet, or something. I know some of the red shirt Jedi had a similar moment, but it wasn’t clear. I suppose it’s a relatively minor complaint, but the confusion of adding a new factor muddied up what was otherwise a pretty good fight scene 🤷🏻‍♂️

Why does somebody have to say something out loud when the visuals already communicate it though? We don't know that they know the reason for it or what the material is. They just know they're hitting a guy and the lightsabers turn off- exactly what the audience can already see.

prolly his master. he says he wants a pupil, which basically means he wants to become a master. the sith are very well known to backstab their masters in order to keep the "Rule of Two" in place. My theory is he's gonna get killed at the end of the season by Plagueis or Plagueis will be revealed to be the master of Qimir. Either or Plagueis will not be replaced.

I've heard rumors that Qimir isn't even a Rule of 2 Sith, just a pretender trying to rebuild the Order. The series ends in season 2 with Darth Plagueis (or whoever they decide in canon) and the REAL Rule of 2 Sith showing up and setting things straight This is just some shit I read on the internet. But a lot of the plot leaks I read about this show back in 2022 (right before Kenobi released) ended up being accurate. I hope this one is too

I couldn't get thru the first 2 episodes of Andor because pacing and lack of action, I had no investment in that character to push through to the apparent good stuff in the middle and tail end of that show. The Acolyte has kept me hooked despite its flaws. It's a 7/10 at best, but entertaining enough. Don't tear it down for those who enjoy it. Don't watch it just to look for something to hate. Having properties that short out a lightsaber blade doesn't require any other physically tough qualities in the material. Why would that connection have to exist? It's like saying a brittle material doesn't make sense if it's not also hard even though that's not a rare combination

It's called cortosis. It was featured pretty often in legends. It's just a chemical property that it has. There's probably old books that explain it better. But the creators of this show didn't invent it, it's been floating around in books since the 80s

But I thought it was some technology that was imbedded in the suit not the metal. It just would’ve been cool to have a line explaining it rather than just speculating what it could be because I haven’t read any comics.

Lightsabers used to be totally bad--- weapons that could cut through anything. Now beskar can block them, cortosis can short circuit them. And both are increasingly common on these Disney shows. Leading me to wonder if lightsabers are obsolete and Force users need to focus more on their powers and less on fencing.
