OKAY! So today i’m going to say it. Ma Long is the GOAT of Table Tennis!
The question is what makes the current Olympic and World Champion so good? We try to figure it out in this video.

I'm a Fan Zhendong fanboy and i've watched and rewatched countless Ma Long vs Fan Zhendong matches through out the years, even when Ma Long was in a low state of his career a couple of years ago, and this is the matrix that Ma Long put out, which give Fan Zhendong so much difficulty even when Ma Long has passed his prime, and Fan is still rising. -Ma Long is unbeatable in forehand. Giving Ma Long the oppotunity to play forehand means you gave away your point. -Ma Long won 60% of the backhand rallies against Fan, who is suppose to be one of the most dominant backhand player in the world. -The only key to unlock this matrix is to play a fast backhand down the line. This is extremely risky, as you're more likely to fail since the table is shorter down the line. If your backhand down the line is not fast enough, Ma Long is going to forehand it back, and again, you give Ma Long the forehand, you lose. Most of the thing i've said can be explain by simply saying: Ma Long is just better than Fan Zhendong, i mean, he beat Fan Zhendong in both forehand and backhand. But this is actually quite a scary thing to say, cuz Ma Long is suppose to be close to the end of his career, he's suppose to be over his prime, but being the tt god that he is, he still play really well.

In term of achievements, consistency and winning percentage, no one can really come close to Ma Long. But, if we compare the style of play and the level of the game, there is one player I can think of and that is Zhang Jike. Zhang Jike was also a complete player but with a backhand dominant instead of forehand dominant like Ma Long and was also a very strong player mentally. Zhang Jike can't match Ma Long in head to head and consistency, but the level of table tennis that Zhang Jike displayed at his peak was absolutely phenomenon. If we have Zhang Jike at his very best versus Ma Long at his very best, it will be one hell of a match with 50:50 chance of winning for either player.

I like the side view angle of the camera the most, because I can clearly see their right distances when they're hitting the ball, most especially the forehand. Watching it on the diagonal is also a great camera angle to watch because you can also see much better how high the ball bounces. In watching game replays, Would be very nice if we can select either one, would truly help in studying games, especially their techniques and timing of shots

I adore the play of Waldner, I identify more because I feel like that no matter how genial he is, what he does somehow is more of this Earth, more potentially reachable. (Not that I will ever 1% of the player he was). But Ma Long is something else, a similar level of technical mastery of all shots, but immensely more power, speed, explosiveness and consistency when making the crazy high speed rallies. Ma Long best ever absolutely. His play after coming back from knee issues has sealed his place. Level + longevity at the top.

He used to play passive(which means safe but not aggresively) with his backhand but during these days, we can see him using more active backhand loops more often while reducing forehand loops. I guess he is making a new strategy due to his age. (Maybe forehand loop causes more power thus makes him more tired compared to when he was younger)

Agree 100% with you on the camera angle. The side-on angle does give you a flavour for how fast the ball's actually travelling, but it's a bit tough to really understand the point. You get no insight on how the players move each other around. The diagonal angle, when reasonably low, is just perfect. The side-on angle, although a tad lower than the one they had at Macao, can be used for replays.

It’s the tactical game and the mental game that makes him so tough to beat. Consider Fan Zhendong for example, he hasn’t won many of the major international tournaments and the Olympics even though his technique for the Backhand is so explosive and powerful and his physical fitness level is insane. But Ma Long win against him in the most crucial points over his experience over big tournaments , mental toughness and tactically always keeping one step ahead of the opponent

Your GOAT question sent me to wikipedia and down a rabbit hole. Looking at the lists of past world champions there is one fact in particular jumps out at you. From its inception in 1926 up until 1935 the world championship (all competitions but especially the singles) were dominated by one country - Hungary (Kingdom of Hungray). This is a sports article waiting to be written by somebody - before it is lost to living memory. I am intrigued how Hungray came to be so dominant for so long. Did they invent the game or something? Another fun fact I stumbled upon - Fred Perry won the world championship one year.

I love this video, it was so good. Nice combination of good points and analysis. It could be a new series of video, focusing on a player journey through a tournament. I agree with you on the camera angle. Main camera angle should be diagonal and not too high. Side camera is ok for some diversity but only for some points. Top view camera is useless. I like the new format with short match for the seeding and the evolution of number of set through the tournament. Quarter finals could be in best of 7 as well. However, I don't like the game point decider.

Ma Long doesn't have 1 thing that's the strongest, Ma Long doesn't have Ryu Seung Min's footwork ,Waldner and Xu xin's touch, Liu Guoliang's serves, Zhang Jike and Fan ZD's backhand and physique, Ma Lin and Wang liqin's forehand power, Lin Gaoyuan's swing speed. Nothing stands out to be the strongest, but he has them all and every 1 of his techniques is among the few best in the world, maybe that just makes him a man of no speciality and a man with all specialities. also, similar to Zhang Yining, Ma Long truly have no obvious weaknesses in all aspects of his game, his game is well balanced, it's just rare. that's the toughest kind of opponent to overcome.

u r blinded by your emotions. facts hit hard. Waldner was really overrated due to his fancy blocks. he was never in a slight way possible dominant in his era like ma long does. Waldner lost to so many players in his time. and was not consistent. how many times he won wttc and Olympics??? and in terms of speed, techniques involved and power, table tennis has evolved and became much more faster, difficult, competitive and fitness demanding. just like every sports does. its much more complicated and sophisticated now. and ma long beats Waldner in every department possible. SPEED, TECHNIQUES, POWER, ATHLETICISM, AGILITY, FOOTWORK, etc. okay, lets put all the things aside. Malong surpassed every players by miles and miles in real statistics. the most medals won. world championship titles. Olympics. ofcourse people can have their opinions, but its official and factual now that he is the G O A T

Obviously when you are representing your country you would give it everything you had to win. Waldner played against the best Chinese teams for generations and won on most occasions, an incredible feat regardless of his personable achievements. What would be more important to you representing your country or your own personal gain? Sometimes I shut my eyes and think how amazing this man was to maintain a high level of endeavor for so long. This feat alone gives him a slight edge over Ma Long who has my upmost respect.

This is fair enough, even for me as a Chinese. I don't know much abt the history, but I know how hard it is to represent China in an international table tennis game. You just have too many beasts to beat before you can stand there. If Waldner beat several Chinese teams, he earns the title already.
@dickn.ormous1064

A slight edge?Waldner had the whole CNT devising tactics to beat him for decades, also Korea and Europe were super strong.Do you think Ma Long would have survived more than 2 years if FZD was allowed to target him?Other than his short game(and I mean pushing) nothing stands out and he had to train it because he lost to veterans like Samsonov/Boll in rallies.Ma Lin for that matter is much more impressive.
