Reaching - Move behind the ball Hitting to hard - Placements are more important Ball watching - Hitting shots and not moving. Expect that every ball will come back Tight grip - The grip must be loose so you can move ur wrist very flexibly. Mindless serving - we should think what we gonna serve so we can know where the return gonna possibly be. Pushing long balls - Play top spin on long balls instead of chopping or backspin. Predictable ball placement- we should not be predictable while we hit the ball. Try cross courts and be not predictable. Standing upright - we must bend low on knees. When we bend it adds energy rather standing upright.

not really, there is so much that coaching can entail, stroke devolopment, proper footwork, serve/serve return and sequencing to name a few. What he covered is extremely important but also very fundament.

One of my biggest mistakes is not watching the ball too close when it is coming towards me. I use my peripheral vision a lot which makes me loose around 20-30% of the points. It is a really bad habit which I am trying to fix. Thanks for the video!

I never really thought too much about ball placement because what I was doing seemed to work well. That was until for the first time I played a left handed player and I found I kept setting him up for forehand topspin winning shots, it really threw me off and it was hard to kind of break my habits and change out of my normal groove

Yep - all great tips - excellent work, Tom. I mention a lot of these when I'm coaching but serving and playing with purpose, and pushing long pushes are two things I don't teach enough so that was interesting for me. Cheers.

I used to play backspin only and assumed everyone would beat me if we ever got into a topspin rally. The only time I'd break that rule was if I thought I could hit a winner. Nowadays I fear topspin rallies much less and incorporate a lot of loops into my game, but I think something that is left over from my previous style is that I put everything into my attacking shots. I'll try reducing the power and see what happens.

I wouldn't say I've mastered the reduced power topspin yet but I've incorporated it for awkward balls that I can't play a full power loop against because I'm out of position. It works differently against different opponents. Sometimes I get a purely defensive block return which is a great opportunity to play a finishing shot because it's harder for them to control the height. Other times it leads to a topspin rally and I either need to just hold my nerve and place the ball well or play a backspin shot placed where they can't loop it. Overall I'd say learning this has improved my game, although it hasn't necessarily been reflected in my results as I feel there's a learning curve.

On point no.5 on mindless serving: just to add on that on top of thinking through what serve we will execute, it is generally useful too (esp. at amateur level) to observe the position and focus of our opponent, so we can serve a type or to a position of his/her weak part at that point in time. But yes, the more advanced our opponent is, the less effective is this approach.
@Ilicet
@Ilicet Жыл бұрын
I like to duplicate serves if the opponent can't return it, or they hit it into the net, watch to see if they think they have figured out how to return it properly, and then switch the serve up so they still can't return it. This usually deflates their confidence which makes it easier to win. I.E. my main serve is a back spin corkscrew to the right, if they figure it out I switch to a top spin to the left.
@sparky2387
@sparky2387 Жыл бұрын
@@Ilicet 4 weeks ago I played against a player who had trouble with my backspin, I noticed it and stopped using it because I felt bad, my coach then said to me that I should keep on using it so ended up using it anyway (still lost the game sadly). Did feel better about using it because he had a serve that destroyed me, so we traded points for a while depending on who served.

Watching this confirmed that my coach did indeed teach me well, cus i only make one mistake mentioned: and that is pushing

Great video - sad that I have to say that - you just pointed out a lot of things I still need to work on. Of the 8, I still need to really work on 5 of them. I'm pretty good at varying ball placement. I start low but soon I am pretty upright again (so still working on that). I vary serves (and try to think about them) but I tend to give tail-tail signs of where I'm going to serve (very bad!). I don't try to kill a lot of shots but I'm better at a kill if I do it with a little less force (and therefore more control). So, yes, it was a timely and great video! Thank you!
