Some of the most expensive pens in the world are made my a company called Montblanc, and their pens go from several hundred to tens of thousands of dollars. But, what makes their pens so expensive?

Several things: Montblanc pens are like Harley Davidson today. More about the name than any thing else. The modern ones are middle of the road at best. Any plastic is a "resin." The "precious resin" myth started with a translation error. And the "classic design" was stolen from the Sheaffer's pen design of the 1950s. The Sheaffer's design was still under copyright then... And then the pens these folks are hawking aren't their design. They're a very common Hero conglomerate Chinese pen that regularly retail for under $5 USD. Nowhere near luxury.

@@marioluigi6024these pens do last a long time, most pens not just montblanc but other brands too. I was given a Montblanc 146 in 2021 as a gift for an estate sale and it still works even though the pen was made in 1990. I have pens made in the 1950s that still work. In some cases they outlive people like turtles so sometimes I inherit pens that someone used for years of their career. Anyway these pens can be good but their other options or older options that may be better and what I prefer, but if you’re not in the hobby then you won’t understand.

What crap. Staying with Montblanc production pens for a moment. They are good, but there are far better pens which are cheaper. Montblanc spend a huge amount on marketing to keep the brand in the boutique niche. The customer pays for that along with the fashion name. Rolex, which are not actually particularly good Swiss watches, did exactly the same. 36 steps to make the nib my arse! No more steps that any good nib. Aurora still make theirs completely by hand. Montblanc probably don't. Their production levels are far too high for that.

@@paulherman5822 Thank you for the extra info. I bought an MB 146, second hand unused, out of curiosity. The nib wrote very nicely for a completely stiff nib and nothing about the pen was in anyway remarkable. I notice that the rather flimsy plastic piston filling mechanism is being sold as a spare on eBay. I know of no other piston filling pen where this appears necessary. Pelikan, which are considerably cheaper also have a stiff nib, but their piston filling mechanism is metal. For the same money as a Montblanc a pen user could buy and Onoto, or U.K. Conway Stewart both handmade, both offering a personalised service (I telephoned them ans had some alterations done at no extra cost). Both of these U.K. brands use a mix of Bock, or Yowo nibs which are made to a much higher spec. than the standard. The nibs are exceptionally nice to write with. They have a little gentle give. I would also regards Aurora as being far superior. There will be others. Re-reading my post above I was surprised how animated my language was, but frankly Montblanc deserve it for their pens.

The precision and build quality are very high as well. But even with such a high praise i must say its overpriced. Some people in the comments compare it to the Custom 823(which is a fantastic pen btw, one of my 3 everyday workhorses in line with Lamy 2000 and Pelikam M800) - it ain't even sniffing the boots of the Meisterstuck - the nib is hard for a gold nib, dry and toothy(which again, are the qualities i rather like for everyday use) but for a pure joy of writing those are detrimental. These are collectors and gift items. The price doesn’t reflect quality in comparison to competitors like Visconti or Pelikan. That “precious resin” they use feels worse than regular acrylic acetate.

You’re paying for the brand name and marketing. All these points mentioned in the video would apply to any established fountain pen maker even though they don’t charge half as much eg pilot, sailor etc.

$10,000 isn't even the most expensive, which is mindblowing...I saw a few that were over $120,000, with the others having a "Please enquire" for the tag.

you should get a pilot, much better quality and at a fraction of the price, or you could get like a Nakimi maki-a which has true art painted on every pen, not just crappy plastic
