The Alfa Romeo Spider is a modern classic Alfa and prices are finally rising. Chris The Alfa Nut takes a drive in his rare V6 Busso engined example and looks at why this undervalued and beautiful classic car is now starting to look like a smart buy! With the right exhaust, the V6 Alfa Spider sound is amazing and even a restoration project is worth investing in, as prices are now on the rise.

Just come across this video after 10 months. I've got a silver 3.0 24V 2001 916 Spider (with red interior), which I've had from new. Loved every minute I've had driving it. Took it to France on holiday once (not possible normally due to lack of boot space for anything but a long weekend), and everybody just stopped and stared as it seems never to have been sold there. I felt like I was driving something really special.

@@TheAlfaNut, you could try some of that colour magic car wax/polish that you get from Halfords, it's the one that comes in a basic colour so for you you just want the dark or light red version. Although it's ment for exterior car body panels, I recon you might get away with using it on the interior, just to implant enough red colour pigment, then go back to normal dashboard cleaners. I used it on a red 02 plate 147 I once owned was turning a bit pink on some of the body panels and after the first few sessions, the panels began to go back to alfa Rosso Red. Then I only applied it once every six months and that was enough to maintain the colour, infact people used to comment on how nice the paintwork was.

As usual, almost all of the Alfa Romeo models become classic someday. Alfa Romeo is the only marque that is collected by everyone: from the billionaire collector who buys at auction an 8c 2900 of millionaire value to the young Dutchman who brings back a 33 or a South ... A unique story of passion. Cars from other emblazoned marques (except supercars and a few others) end up to the eastern countries, then crushed by the wreckers

You forget to mention about GTV rear suspension: Copy/paste "The independent, multiple arm rear suspension comprises quadrilateral geometry with an upper triangle, double lower arms, coil springs and anti-roll bar secured to a light alloy subframe which is, in turn, mounted onto the car's body. The design of this geometry, and the fine tuning of the bushes, is such that during initial stages of a turn, the centrifugal forces create a small 'rear wheel steer' effect in the opposite direction to the way the front wheels are being pointed. Then, as the centrifugal forces build up through the corner, the rear wheels start steering in the same direction as the front wheels. The result is a more positive 'attack' into the first stages of cornering and increased stability in the later stages. This multilink rear suspension was designed by Gianclaudio Travaglio".

Thanks for watching Michael - I’ve owned my Spider for over 5 years and not only has it never let me down but I’ve only spent about £500 on her in all that time. Emissions have never been an issue for any Alfa I’ve owned except for my 156 and that turned out to be caused by a cheap replacement cataylst that had been fitted. I bought a used original one and it went through 1st time! There are no bad Alfas, just bad previous owners 😉

@@TheAlfaNut Thanks for replying. There is an Alfa specialist in Royston who said something a little different to you. Basically they said to get a car through its MOT emissions test, drive it very hard & get the 'friendly' MOT station to test the emissions first. I dont know if they were just saying that but it was very good advice. Then again his GTV does have 140k miles on the clock. I still cannot believe the exhaust though. He is building one himself & is thinking about different positions for the Cat. That V6 of yours does sound great though...........

It’s unfortunately not driven enough and I’m about to leave the country for a while, so it’ll be stored. Regardless of value ( and I haven’t seen any appreciable increase in all the while I’ve had it), I doubt I’d ever sell it. It’s too lovable. Hi mate, thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed. i ‘m working on another V6 Spider video right now, so keep an eye out for that very soon! I think you might be surprised by the value of Spiders now, especially V6 versions (and a Zoe Yellow V6 is super rare - only a couple of those left in the country). In total today, there are just 23 V6 Spiders on the road and 15 SORN’d. My car has pretty much doubled in value in the 5 years I’ve owned it. You car would probably fetch between £7,500 and £12,000 depending on condition and mileage. Get an agreed value for your insurance by the Alfa Romeo Owners club - it’s free and you may be surprised by the figure! 😉
@anaesthete
@anaesthete 3 жыл бұрын
The Alfa Nut Hi. Thanks for that. I genuinely had no idea about those values. I recall someone on Alfaowner running a check about 10 or more years ago as they worked for the ONS, and at that time there were 10 registered V6 Zoes in the U.K. and possibly around 100 or so V6s in total, so if the number has dramatically collapsed, then it’s a shame and a boon. I think I’ll take mine for a spin this coming weekend. I’ll keep an eye out for that video.

Yes, sadly numbers have declined with many being scrapped during the “nadir” of values. This is a classic Alfa pattern however and scarcity always helps to boost values. @TheAlfaNut
@TheAlfaNut Жыл бұрын
Hej Jorgen, congratulations! I hope you have a great Summer driving her around. There is a manual override for the electric roof: push the drivers seat back forward, you will see a small black plastic cover on the bulkhead behind. If you prise this off, there are 2 buttons behind - one button operates the hood down, the other button makes it go up again. Try this first to reset the mechanism. If it is broken, a common problem is a nylon toothed gear wheel which gets damaged. You can buy a replacement one from my friend Gary’s website: www.totallyalfa.com Good luck! 😎👍🏻

There have been plenty of hot summer days where I questioned my decision. Especially that summer where the air conditioner aluminum pipe got a pin hole and I struggled to find a welder willing to fix it. Apparently part not available. Wonderful. Oh the pain, quite literally, sitting on black leather in shorts! I still think it was the right call for me how ever. But I admit looking enviously at a friends V6 spider sometimes on a beautiful summer day. Excuse my rambling. Just talked to my mechanic and there is a lot of work ahead before my mistress is back on the road and I miss her. Also means lot of work for me as well to be able to pay the bill. But they are worth it aren't they :)

Hey mate, yeah the Spider is actually quite easy to improve in that respect - mine has wing braces made by Totally Alfa and also fitting a lower chassis brace makes a big difference too. @@TheAlfaNut For some reason I never got a notification you had replied. Now I stumbled upon my own comment by accident. Funny. I'm in finland. My car has since gone through many modifications and fixes. Luckily the aircon pipe has kept working but there was a new issue last summer where it on hot days sometimes turned itself off, and sometimes it did not want to turn on. Basic aircon service did not reveal anything. System was almost full so not sure why it was acting up. Might be the rotten condenser, it is getting replaced by a used better unit. Hope that fixes it and it is not the compressor because I would not have a clue where to get one of those for a 96 turbo V6. If you ever read this then I wish you all the best. Ps. Since the first time watching this I have learned that Fiat management are to blame for the delay between first showing of the car and the actual launch. They wanted to release Fiat Coupe first.

Alfa’s are great great cars. I still have a 916 2.0, a pair of 145 Cloverleafs and am currently building an Alfetta GTV6 with a 3.0 heart from a 75 QV. The 916 spider is epically pretty, and your black one with the 17” teledials looks just perfect. Maybe I should have kept my Spider...never driven a 3.0 version, mind

You obviously have excellent taste! 😄 I’ve had a soft spot for the 145 ever since they came out. Such a cool little car - I’ll feature one in a video one day for sure. Good luck with your GTV6 build, another beautiful design! The Busso V6 in a Spider is a great combo, especially with the roof down and a tuned exhaust, the sound is epic. Handling is more neutral with the Twinnie engine of course but for me, the V6 is a fast cruiser rather than a track day car. (Having said that, I have done a track day in it!)

Yeah I’ve always loved the 145 Qv and then I bought one and realised its even better than what everybody had said, especially after serious restoration work including all new suspension. They are, however, unsellable (my Phase 1 project has received no bids and has a very low starting price). The Alfetta is currently in our garage having some prep work completed under the arches (it’s amazingly solid for one of these) and should be MOT’d early next year. I sold a 164 QV 24v early last year and kind of regretted it, but my brother still has a red 164 QV 24v with the optional black Recaros so I still get to experience one. I may hunt down a 3.0 Spider like yours to try....the last 3.0 Busso to leave my household was my Phase 1 166 Super Lusso which I sold a few months ago (was sat 13 years)

I love the GTV convertable when the hood is down, the side profile looks very classy. Unfortunately for me when the hood is up it spoils the car's intent design theme. The coupe's lines on the other hand works best in side profile and generally has a better proportioned profile. Had myself a early GTV 2L T Spark Coupe back in 2004. Best looking car but really bad fit & finish issues. Hope they improved things on the revised addition with new interior. I'm tempted to buy the early 90's GTV V6 model in turquoise blue. These are very very rare as early GTV V6's in general aren't too common to see as to the revised later versions.

Hi - thanks for watching. I think the later Spiders are holding their value reasonably well and are more modern of course. HOWEVER.... they are much heavier (1700 kgs) and the V6 isn't a Busso of course - it's a GM engine and doesn't sound anywhere near as good. It has 40bhp more than the Busso engines car but is slower 0-100km. It's too heavy and the handling is softer but still a nice car. All the later V6 Spiders are 4WD too. Hope that helps.

Two comments A) the car you are driving is a spider, not a gtv. The gtv was the coupe version built on the same chassis B) sad to see you have the airbag light on. On my car back in the days it was a regular occurence, due to faulty wiring of the seatbelt pre+tensioner under either driver or passenger seat For the rest, you got yourself a mint conditions car there, even if probabpolished for the video. The GTV 916 and Spider 916 are heavier than MX5 not because of that engine, which is by its own about the same weight as that 1.8 in MX5 (around 140kg each). It is heavy because it is rather luxurious grand tourer than a sports car and has more rigid and stiff body, better soundproofing etc.

If you were in my Spider when it goes over bumpy roads, you wouldn't say it had a rigid and stiff body!! ;0)

@@TheAlfaNut Well... its not great but not that terrible like Miata NA and NB. NC is a different story - modern chassis developed for RX8 and MX5. But for me 916 series is not that much of a drivers car. I much more prefer 164, 166 and old 116 series GTV.

@@TheAlfaNut It is not about driven wheels, there are many great FWD cars and many utterly miserable RWD. For example old Skodas were rubbish. Or Chrysler Crossfire comes to my mind. As for Alfas - 147 and 156 GTA are with no doubt great cars if retrofitted with LSD. But that is just typical Alfa - make a great car and just before it is properly finished say "Nah... that´ll do" and they go for lunch. But that is just Alfa... you love it or you hate it. Nothing between :)

Watching again in anticipation of picking up my Zoe yellow TS spider from Autolusso next month, They do look beautiful to my eye , although I admit it’s a bit marmite. The 3.0 is a fab engine, I have owned to date 3 , GTV x 2 and a GT ... However...... In the spider I think the TS is the one to have , 4 pots are the mainstay of open top motoring for me , and the lighter front end leads to a lot less understeer , the V6 does want to plough on , and even the addition of a quaife doesn’t entirely mitigate for it. Weight is weight after all, an if you were to go to the trouble of doing the same to a twinny and having some fun with induction and ignition timings there really wouldn’t be much in it.. That said in the hardtop the V6 is the only engine to have... Enjoyed the video as much second time around if not more..👌 They will go up in value , marque of note, coach works of note, engine of note, factory of note..if they were RWD they would already be much more expensive...

Hi Joe, thanks for watching. Zoe Spiders are pretty rare now, so sounds like a smart purchase! My Spider has had a bit of chassis work done, new suspension, thicker anti roll bars, poly bushes and wing braces. It’s much improved and handles great but you are right, it won’t ever feel as neutral as a Twinny. Fantastic noise though! 😄

JTS has more power -165hp but the Twinspark has more character & sounds better I think. Twinsparks use more oil & gas though. Tough decision. 🤨

Thats probably the best engine, apart from the 1750 tbi. The 2.4 can easily be remapped to give 220 -250bhp 😎👍🏻

I suspect the V6 models, GTV and Spider may well go up in value, but the twinnies at this stage remain very cheap and most are getting scrapped when the cost of fixing them outweigh their value. A mate of mine offered his 2L spider to me, for $2k Aud but it needs many repairs and bodywork, all of which would significantly outweigh its value even when repaired. I said no thanks.

Hi David, thanks for watching mate, yep a V6 would be a good investment now. The Twinnies will go up eventually but will always lag far behind the rarer models. Shame - the Twinny Spider is a better handling car than the V6.

Which of the smaller engines is better the 1.8 or the 2.0 ? If heard the 2.0 is prone to catastrophic engine failures.. Asking because both can be had for under 5000€
@TheAlfaNut
@TheAlfaNut 4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t agree with that - personally I’d get the 2.0 Twinspark engine. They are great if you look after them properly - they use oil however and you must check the oil level every week. The later JTS engines are best avoided as they are expensive to maintain and not that reliable.
