Hey Matt! 5 years of snowboard instructing experience here. Have them stand up on their toe edge and practice transitioning back over to the heel edge to build confidence. Once they get that, get them going straight (but slow) and get them to practice stopping on the toe edge. Once they get both of those down being able to connect turns will come pretty naturally.

It is also much easier for most to learn strapped into their (most comfortable) front foot only at the bottom bunny hill. PSIA certified here, and starting out with one foot only led to successful learning almost 100% of the time.

skiing instructor here, I had to learn to snowboard like a total beginner in spite of then 25 years of skiing. I personally felt much safer in toe edge than heel edge, because I could see the mountain close, rather than the deep valley. It also felt much easier on steeper parts of the slope, because on the flatter parts I'd always dig in the wrong edge, planting my head in the snow... As I was practicing heel edge stops, one time my board flipped (ankles couldn't hold the pressure from fatigue) and dug the toe edge, which faced forward, in the snow, and that happened at too high a speed for me anyway, because there was an unexpected ice slate. Anyway, when I gruntingly rolled over, magically about 10 people had appeared around me. Yup, I had blacked out from that hit, and they said I was out for almost a minute. Unstrapped. Walked down the hill. I can do anything a snowboard can on 2 skis, and it just isn't worth risking a concussion or skull fracture again... I'm 6'2" and that slope was 45°, so my head came down 12' on hard ice. Helmet felt like it wasn't even there... The main reason why I'd still like to properly learn, is high mountain deep powder, because the board floats much easier than skis, and with skis it's just the worst workout possible...

For teaching them how to carve, you need to take off your board and stand in front (downhill) of them while holding their hands. That way you can keep them up in case they lose their balance, and you can help with the turning from one edge to another. Also, quick tip for learning transitioning from front to rear: we tend to lean back and put more weight on our dominant (right if you ride normal) foot. That makes it more difficult to transition as that leg has to do the entire movement. So tell them to try leaning a tiny bit forward when transitioning. Also, flat runs are harder to learn carving on then a bit steeper runs. Carving gets easier the faster you are going, so don't choose a very flat run to teach them on.

yeah learning to carve on flat is asking for them to catch an edge that will take them down. I think toe edge across the run then heel back the other way in switchbacks, as many as you can do, as shallow a decent as you can manage, all the way down the mountain would be good practice for learning how to carve. There's no such thing as just bombing down on toe edge in a straight line, to maintainan edge by virtue a board has to be turning, at least slalom boards and skis. I realize with straight skis or speed boards you can go straight on edge, that's why they are a different shape. TLDR shallow decent switchbacks across the run, heel across, toe across, back and forth, learn to transition, because just maintaining a straight line will require some amount of carving transitions.

Work with them on the "falling leaf" pattern riding heals and toes. This helped me greatly learn my balance point on my toes and get comfy with it - in particular going at a slow pace down a bunny hill. Freaking awesome you're working with them to ride both sides. I tell every new boarder to learn both sides ASAP as it'll make it SO much more fun! It took me a long time to get switch down after years of just using one side, and it suuuuucked! lol

I know CA doesn’t have much for a TX man to think sounds good. But honestly, as the kids get a little better, Alpine Meadows in Lake Tahoe on the CA side is killer. Homewood has incredible views and has more blue Squares and a few green circles for the kids.

Go to telluride Colorado, very nice hill, very short lift lines and amazing views. It has rated as one of, if not the best ski hill in the country. Check it out!

You guys say you want to try Colorado places, have you ever been to Keystone? I worked out there for a couple of seasons as a tubing attendant, snowboard coach, and bike coach. It's a pretty great mountain, lots of fantastic terrain for all skill levels, very kid friendly. If you're trying to teach the little ones toe edge, it's best to literally hold their hands. To get them to get good engagement on their heel edge, teach them to roll the tops of their hips out; make pretty much a straight line from the head down to the knees, and thelat should make it easier to hold that heel edge up. Good luck.

I hope the kids know how blessed they are to have a dad who was able to take his hobby of shooting weird crap out of guns into a multi-channel merch generating (and then printing and shipping) business cluster that supports a fun and excellent life, with the support (and oversight, and business management) of a fantastic Mom!

Love seeing y'all go to other resorts! Though sad, Park City has earned it's score. I like it since it's on the Epic pass, but they aren't very good at keeping things moving a lot, since there are so many pass holders to so few employees. I do thing the Canyons side is a little better, both better snow and less crowded generally.

Come try Bridger Bowl. It is a smaller "locals" resort in Bozeman, MT. Lots of terrain for all levels of skiers and lift-accessed side-country terrain. You can't keep skiing Big Sky without trying out Bridger Bowl. Also, next time you are at Big Sky or if you come to Bridger, there is an organization called Eagle Mount that helps people of all needs and abilities experience life to the fullest. It would be awesome if you could feature them as I think you would connect with their motto, "Everyone has challenges, we have adventures!"
