the concept was basically that the US would essentially give out loans to other countries in exchange for control or influence over their government.

McKinley, Roosevelt and Taft were not the only meddlers in our history. Wilson's moral interventionism also failed. Europeans resented his meddling in their affairs- although to be fair, when the US was not a part of the very league of nations he helped create, it was because Congress blocked him. It is good to try to help the rest of the world, but not when we insist on doing everything our way. It brings to mind the lyrics of a Thrice song "swingin my hands through a swarm of bees. Don't understand why they are stingin me. Do what I want, do what I please, do what I want till I got what I need."

Doesn't sound like a failure if we still feel the impact years later

We feel the impact, because the failure of the policy led to a more long lasting counter backlash.

Agreed that a broader and more comprehensive examination of diplomatic and economic policy is warranted.

Theodore Roosevelt laid the groundwork for a hemispherical oligarchy. William Howard Taft (Roosevelt's chosen successor) went all soft and 'wobbly' - much to Theodore's consternation.

PAX ROMANA, PAX BRITANNIA, PAX AMERICANA. Good order is the predicate to justice/prosperity. Even Jesus conceded that point.

Thanks for noticing that one word inaccurately used to embellish the invasion of Haiti, which was actually part of Roosevelt's big stick diplomacy.

There are many factors to diplomacy. Dollars work sometimes and often not. It depends on the country. Politicians in the USA and other countries are most often crooked.. Duh!

@Michael R Taft* He actually ran a second time but lost because Teddy Roosevelt created a second party, the bull moose party, and this caused republican votes to split and resulting in democrat Woodrow Wilson's victory.

There's always people that want poor people to stay poor so they can control them. There's always rich people that will exploit poor people for cheap labor. And there are always people who protest business and jobs moving to a poor area to employ them. And instead of working towards getting the people better conditions, wages, improved by living conditions in an area after proof that they will build quality, be a stable workforce with loyalty to their work becomes apparent. That's when the protesters come in and destroy everything and demotivates the workers by lying to them about how first world people have it better. Yeah of course first world people have it better but they've been trying to improve their situations for thousands of years. They don't just overnight, boom turn into a megalopolis.
