I have a 2005 325i and I've been driving it for 3 years now. It's such a nicely built, solid car. Absolutely fun to drive on twisty country roads here in New Zealand. And because it's an enthusiast's car, there's tonnes of DIY videos to fix almost anything. I've replaced my Oil filter housing gasket and oil cooler gasket myself, and a rear window regulator as well, without any prior car maintenance experience. I got it with 104,000kms on it and had the water pump and thermostat replaced right away by a shop. So now I don't have any critical items to worry about, except maybe for the alternator and AC compressor next. I only wish I got a manual instead of an automatic, but those are hard to find in my part of the woods.

I have a US-spec 2011 E90 335i MSport with manual, no Idrive, xenon, HK sound that I picked up at the factory when new through the European Delivery program. Drove around Bavaria then dropped off at Munich airport. It showed up at Atlanta, Georgia dealership one month later. I’ve replaced some of the soggier suspension bits with OEM M3 spec. Very nice car that is a great daily driver. The steering is better then newer models with electric power steering and the size is more to my liking than the larger versions built since. The N55 can be frustrating with blown up plastic charge pipe and other known issues, but the independent BMW shop I use post-warranty has done a good job keeping up with it. The owner of the shop is a former dealer tech and says that N54/N55 engines have to be maintained like M cars to keep this at bay. BMW started recommending some sensor-based nonsense to determine oil change intervals here in the US. Some cars didn’t get their first oil change until 17k miles, along with ‘lifetime’ diff service and long transmission service intervals as well. The result has been predictable for many of these cars. I changed oil at 1200 miles, then 5k, and every 5k or annually since. Diff and trans doneat 5k and every 30k afterwards. If maintenance is done the way BMW used to recommend, the drivetrain can be reliable.

Don’t like: no dipstick, glovebox a little small, no pockets on seat or door pockets in back, driver’s footwell a little cramped. No OBD faults at 140k miles. Apart from bricked frm module (reverse lights don't work) the car is perfect. It handles beautifully, pulls like a train and revs freely to redline. If buying again, I might look for the 3 litre, but the 3 stage intake means there is more to go wrong...imho. Only car which I would consider changing to would be a Porsche but they are out of my reach... probably a good thing!

I'm currently learning to drive in my Dad's 07' 320d E91 estate touring and its a real challenge coming from the driving instructors car. Especially since it's done 197,000 miles on the clock and with the heavy steering! But I must say its never not fun to drive! This will be my first car so I think I've got a lot to look forward to in it!

I have a 2007 e92 which I bought in Feb 2016. It's a 325d with tiptronic gear change and it only had 22,760 genuine miles on the clock. Full leather sat nav electric seats and more. A real wolf in sheep's clothing, with 197 bhp it's proper drivers car the handling is superb.17 inch low profile tyres and the 0 to 62 feels quicker than 8.5 secs.

Quicker than 8,5 seconds yes. I have a 2006 e90 325d with 197hp too, it does 0-62(100km/h) in about 7,5 seconds. Well maintained all these years, however some of the electronics are a little fucked. Other than that it still runs like a beast.

I have owned my 2007 E90 323i for around 7 years and the car now has a bit over 230,000kms. About 6 months ago the original engine died and so I went through the very expensive option of replacing the engine with a low km good condition 2nd hand engine. In many ways economically it didn’t really make sense to this but I did regardless as I enjoy the car, and couldn’t stand the idea of sending it to the wreckers. Sadly the paintwork on the roof, bonnet and boot are all starting to fail and so that too will be a costly repair. I know not worth doing from a financial perspective but when I can afford it, I will get it sorted out. Overall, it’s been a good experience with the car and I must say when out on the open road it’s a real pleasure to drive.

It doesn't have to be economically viable to save these cars, I know exactly how you feel. Other people won't understand the connection that 'car people' get with their car. A friend of mine spent £1000s on his E90, and still never had anything bad to say about it. Great cars and like any machine, they need maintenance :)
@ericgoulinlippifernandes29609 ай бұрын
Great video! I really need to comment on the part about the indicators. I'm sorry to tell you that you did not understand the system properly with regard to cancelling the indicator. You are supposed to press it slightly in the SAME direction as the side that is actually on, i.e. the side you want to cancel. In my opinion, and I have owned an e90 for almost 8 years now (still going very strong without any problems), the indicator system is the best in car history, once you know how it works!

Beautiful car I had a M 320d in 2010 that was wrecked then got a 320i very comfortable rear seats / because they are fairly old now one should get a BMW specific scanner when acquiring the car because even when you change your battery it needs to be coded & registered or else you'll stuff the alternator don't fear most of the maintenance can be DIY with a guide & the right tools

I've bought one year and a half ago a 320d E90 Msport in very good condition with 105.000miles. Good handling, very quiet on the road and beautiful with the dakota leather. The only issue is that I've got an high oil consumption: I need to add almost 1L of oil every 2500 miles. PCV valve changed, engine runs smooth, turbo never changed (still the original from the 2005) Engine m47 163cv...any advice?

Hi JJ. Yeah, I'm with the motoring press on this and have never been a fan of the design, great car that it undoubtedly is. It also obviously suffers from the BMW way of listing everything you'd possibly want as an optional and probably costly extra. Having said all that, these 3 series always seemed larger and more spacious than you imagined they'd be so big tick for that and if someone offered me one at the right price, of course I'd be delighted to drive one. I see that now BSJJ is a business exec', he's calmed his hair down! Cheers.

Yep, I think it's the kidney grille area for me that's not quite right. But from some angles I quite like the looks of it. It is surprising how much space there is, much better than a lot of other cars I've tested. I'm sure BSJJ will be up to something completely different next time, can't get him to stick to anything 😄 Cheers John!

I have an E91 320d 2007 model M47TU2D20, Sapphire Black with gloss black kidney grills that looks stock with the car's paint and OEM E91 Blackline tail lights and angel eyes. Set on 17" OEM style 187 and style 284 with spacers on the rear axle. M Sport interior with the black roofliner, sport steering wheel and sport gear knob. No iDrive which I'm fine with and no cup holders which can be a pain sometimes. I do have nets at the back of my sport seats with inflatable cushioning for the sides and the back. Since my brother owned it and I afterwards it's always been serviced decent, he however did some mods that I've turned back stock again. It's on Bilstein B4 and the whole underside has been renewed since 10.000km ago. It did 232km/h this summer on the German highway even though it's stock. I felt it could do a tiny little bit more but traffic came ahead, normally it's limited to 223km/h. 270.000k right now and there's nothing wrong with it, my garage says it can easily go for another 10 15 years. As someone mentioned here in the comments, if you push your indicator the same way back it stops blinking which is quite handy.

Nice one. Agree that you're not missing out without iDrive :) That is good to know about the indicator, it's not quite as badly designed as I thought haha

I have the e90 pre lci 320dse with same engine, remapped it and its smoothed it out and made it surprisingly quick, i did the same as you, full m sport leather interior with electric bolsters m sport wheel and a copy f series gearknob that feels great and added the black bamboo wood trim, i love it but it has been going through abs sensors on the back wheel so probably will need a new driveshaft that won't be cheap, apart from this though its been reliable.
@maqsoodhassan89788 ай бұрын
Owned mine for 3 years and had issues yearly. All really weird issues too but that happens if you get your car bought for you 😂😂 (uncle). Had issues with my control arms literally tearing in half. Constant issues with suspension (broken sway bars) and had an issue with a brake caliper that kept seizing despite changing it. Even my garage were stumped on the issue. Ultimately sold it for cheap and have been torn about buying another one. Loved the car despite everything, suprisingly always turned on, had 0 issues with the ignition and kept on top of the maintainance i could afford. Hoping to get into a type r now, something with just as much perf as the 320d with more reliability.

The heavy steering concerns me, is there a way to loosen it?
@georgemorley102911 ай бұрын
I’ve got a 14 year old E90 320d “M sport” with 180,000 miles on the clock. Every time I think I’m going to move on from it, after every service or MOT, I always find myself happy that I haven’t and that I just keep it going. Having driven more recent models as hire cars, I feel like this was a high point for the marque, a period when driver engagement and technological complication were still in balance with each other. Newer BMW cars, for all their electronic interfaces, ironically make me feel very disconnected from what it is that I’m actually doing, which is not selecting a tune from iTunes, or gazing at a tablet-like satnav screen, but driving a car. And funny old thing, I want to feel like I’m driving a car.

I ran a manual 2005 E91 320d M Sport for 9 years. Took it to 238k miles with very few issues but I did service it every 10k miles. Best car I've owned and really miss it. It would still be going now if I hadn't bumped it but I had some great A/Broad drives in it along the way. Running a 17 plate Merc B Class at the mo and it feels dead at the wheel compared to the BMW despite it being more modern with better tech but it just doesn't make you grin or look forward to the drive like the BMW did.
@totuudentorvi77815 ай бұрын
Feeling dead at the wheel is because of the more modern tech. Electric power steering ruined the steering of 99% of cars out there. The E90 was the last 3-series that was good to drive - because it still had proper steering.

If the indicators are anything like my 1 series, you cancel them by tapping it in the SAME direction as you are indicating.. took me a while to find that out! Im currently in search of a car and an E93 (330/35i) is on my list... i love the folding hardtop, which also puts the 350SL on the list... id really like an XK8 (the 4.2 ideally) but i think id really struggle with my narrow and tight parking arrangement! Any other convertibles that have 6+ cylinders, a bit of poke and character that you can think of? bonus points for 4 seats! Great video once again! Cheers, Keep up the great work !
@JJonCars Жыл бұрын
Ohh really! will have to try that out next I find myself behind the wheel of a Beemer of this era. Much more usable, but not intuitive at all haha. Convertibles that spring to mind: Mercedes CLK or E-Class Convertible, both have 4 seats that will just about fit adults in the back, and huge engines available too. Both soft tops though. Thanks! :)
@karlbielby9460 Жыл бұрын
@@JJonCars No, but now i know how it works, I find it way better than most other cars, where you tap the opposite way! I had thought of the CLK, definately one to go look at. I hadnt thought of the E class though, though it may be a bit big...cheers for the reccomendation!

I feel inclined to make a video of my experience with my e90 after 4 years. Total cost of parts about 2500 not including normal wear and tear like brakes and spark plugs tires. I’ve done all the work myself and I redlined it almost every time I drove it. Still have it today running a shorter belt bypassing the alternator which is putting more strain on alternator pully causing some knocking on startups but other than that engine purs eats of the highways and turns and I’ve driven the crap out of her. 165k got her 100k and honestly very confident I’ll get to 200k without having to change the way I drive. Great car idc what anyone says.
