The best thing hackers did for me was get my 128GB microSD card working with it. If unofficial sources could finagle a microSD into working, Sony could make the damn thing to work with SD cards. At least if SONY released some decent MEM card sizes like 256 GB/512 GB it wouldn't be as big of an issue, but they never did, I'm hoping some Chinese 3rd party will offer some unofficial PSV MEM cards that are basically just modified microSD cards that ideally come in up to 1 TB or so, you never know it might happen eventually.

The Vita was ahead of its time and far ahead of the 3DS. It failed, in my opinion, due to two reasons: 1. The brutally high cost of the proprietary memory cards. 2. Being ignored by Sony and not marketed well. The death of the Vita may have been a self fulfilling prophecy. #1 above led to poor sales which led to #2.

The PS Vita was a powerful machine for the first 2 years on the market. It definitely wasn't revolutionary though like the PSP thats for sure. I've spoken to some friends that work in AAA game dev and the actual biggest thing was something gamers didn't consider. The Vita was just too good for it's own...good. It really was just a compact home console and that made it very expensive to develop for to meet expectations the hardware put in place, compared to the 3DS that was waaay cheaper to develop for. If they wanted to make a console quality game...they could just make it for the already established consoles with far larger install bases like...the PS3. If they wanted to make small, cheap handheld games, the 3DS or mobile were the smarter options. This in conjunction with your listed issues just doomed this poor device. It's just the DreamCast all over again. It's a shame.

I'm not a fanboy so I'm not knocking Switch but I know what you mean. Vita feels Premium even in 2020. It just does. I recently grabbed a Switch Lite and I like it but it feels so cheap. It feels like they build the thing for $20 and sell it at $200. It works but it feels like Nintendo really cuts all corners they can, even down to the packaging. I honestly wondered of my Switch was used before for a second when unboxing lol. I like it! I don't dislike it but I can't help but think it feels like a toy more than a premium gaming device. Vita still feels like a premium device. From the design to the buttons themselves to the screen, it has another level of quality to it that it both explainable and unexplainable at the same time. I also wish they'd jump back in to the handheld market but they recently claimed they were done there. If they ever did I'd suggest that they return to the PSP branding, drop the proprietary memory cards and *keep the device separate from it's console cousin* . Make games cross platform all you can but tell devs to think of it as it's own thing as much as possible. Stop forcing mobile versions of PS4/5 titles, etc. Make it a true mobile gaming device, not just a device that plays a worse version of your favorite AAA games while on the toilet. Make AAA games designed FOR the handheld, like Nintendo does. That's why they dominate that market. They're terrific at seeing their handhelds as their own thing. Switch is kinda both but I still consider it a home console. I consider the 3DS the last true Nintendo handheld and up to then they were great at letting it be it's own thing.
@s4shrish4 жыл бұрын
After what Sony did to Vita, I simply can't forgive them. Fuckers don't have faith in their stuff, and till the end didn't make the right decision. Look at Nintendo and how long they supported the WiiU WHILST still putting games for the 3DS. I was hoping till the Vita's production cycle end that they MIGHT just announce a cheap version that has microSD card support. And it would have taken off pretty quickly. But no. Blunder after blunder. The way they ditched my boi, and how they sucked the Vita out of it. Don't get me wrong, the engineers who made the Vita did a splendid job. But the Vita execs, who chose to 1) Not cut it's price like Nintendo did with 3DS early on to boost sales 2) to have outrageously expensive memory cards that were compulsory, being the prime reason why a lotta people said they would not buy it 3) Cut development of it's games just 2 years into it's life 4) Didnt promote it with special offers like Free GTA Vice City Stories with the console and such 5) most importantly, release a non-proprietary memory card version of the console The Speed of memory card's not a factor when the 3DS and the Switch and gazillion other smartphones do just fine. Because their proprietary memory cards aren't any SSD level or such as well. They are barely faster, I have seen the operation speed in VitaShell, it's molasses. It was just an excuse to unsuccessfully curb piracy like the one that was prevalent on PSP. But that never works.

Overpriced memory cards that aren't hot-swappable. So, people got the cheapest one, then find they only have space for 1 or 2 games, then find if they bought another memory card the first memory card they bought would be unusable anyway (Not hot-swappable, you have to format it each time you swap it), so they just don't bother buying anymore games. John S AT&T was the best choice for a couple of different reasons. It was the carrier that was most compatible with the rest of the world. T-Mobile, the other GSM carrier in the US, used a non-standard set of frequencies that weren’t directly compatible with AT&T. At the time, phone OEMs had to make two different variants for that reason. Even if Sony offered an unlocked version of the Vita in the US, it wouldn’t work with T-Mobile’s 3G frequencies. It didn’t make financial sense to offer a T-Mobile variant of the Vita specifically for the US market when there was little assurance that it would sell. We know how that played out. Another reason against T-Mobile was that it SUCKED back then. Speeds were ok.......if one’s area actually had decent coverage. T-Mobile back then was a far cry from what it is today.

@@JohnDoe-kv3kd After looking into their newest game 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, it took them a little over 4 years to develop. It was originally supposed to release in Japan in 2018 on the Vita and the PS4, and instead release last year only on the PS4. And that game is still gonna be localized for other nations. After looking into that game, I'd say that's most likely the reason we haven't seen something like Muramasa releasing on the Switch. This will always be salt in my wound from Sony. To this day them abandoning the handheld market to Nintendo is still something that sticks in my craw. when I see what Nintendo is done and what Sony could have done had they actually supported the thing and continued it's lineage to something closer to the switch or even better I'm just left thinking of what could have been.
@JohnDoe-kv3kd4 жыл бұрын
@Mike UK Nintendo figured it out a hybrid is the best/only way to make this work. It guarantees you get a consistent experience either in handheld mode or docked and that games will be supported across the board. Clearly when the PS4 took off Sony made a basic decision. the thing that makes the most money and has the most support (developer wise) will get all the attention the other one will simply be allowed to wither and die. Sony couldn't make another one if they wanted to because confidence would be non-existent in a new one after what they did with the vita.
@weaverquest4 жыл бұрын
Both Sony and Nintendo opted to support 1 device and that's probably because how expensive game development has gotten. Now all Sony first party games go to PS4 and all Nintendo ones go to the Switch. The interesting thing is that Sony already attempted to make a hybrid device with PSP Go which had an actual dock accessory to play games on the TV with a Dualshock 3 wirelessly. It was the most portable handheld too but only supported digital games and didn't took off in the end.
@JohnDoe-kv3kd4 жыл бұрын
@@weaverquest And of course the Vita TV aka PSTV. Yeah I know people have talked about that for quite a while yes the PSP and the Vita were technically hybrids before that was a thing. The funny thing is the Vita was actually more popular than the 3ds in Japan. And even after Sony in America basically gave up on it, in Japan it was still thriving. That is the reason why if you look at the Vita game library most of it is localised games from japan. Still sad they didn't pull out the potential out of the system. I think if they didn't use proprietary memory for the system it would have turn out far better. I think the real reason they didn't use regular SD cards was because they feared the same thing that happened with the PSP would happen with the vita. The stupid thing was it was still hacked pretty quickly even though you do have to jump through a few more hoops to do so.

the oled screen is great, didn't need to be touch... didn't need the back touch pad(s), camera, motion controls, mic, 3G/AT&T,... The two analog sticks are an awesome addition from a single AS on the PSP (but they aren't clickable - L3/R3, or are they? Not sure, probably not)... The prop. memory card instead of a SD card is the worst thing about it... Without the extra fluff, this could've been _it_ (a switch before switch - if it connected to a TV, that is)

Still have my Vita, and still love it! It's worth owning one, if only for the PS4 Remote Play function. "Killzone" and "Uncharted" are probably my favourite games, and still look great today. It really is a shame that Sony abandoned the Vita, it could have been so much more.

I really love my launch day, non-cellular vita 1000 model. I really don’t love the way Sony abandon it. I still play & recently platinumed a couple games & im playing a Lego game now (love Lego games for their simplicity & stress relieving properties). Absolutely Killzone is the best looking & just so happens to be my fav shooter series...of course platinumed all games. KZ2 is the peak but they’re all really good.

i have a vita. it was a very relaxing gaming console. unlike my ps4, i don't have to turn on TV, i don't have to sit in living room. i can play some really decent games like Need For Speed Most Wanted and DQ Small Builder anywhere, even on my bed.

Still my fav console to date. I smash ps4 all day (during iso) and 2 switch’s in my household (my partner and I have 1 each) verifies my love for handhelds.. But I still find myself WANTING to play my vita. It’s weird. I recently bought a 2000, just to hack out of interest. I love it, but I still place my original 1000 above it. With ps+ games backlog dating back to the release of the vita, I’ve never really had an issue finding something to sink my teeth into on it without spending big on games. It still sits in its case on my bedside table and I still boot it up every couple of days just to spend time on it.

Get a Vita, mod it and see if you don't fall in love with it. My only caveat would be to *not* pay more than $100 for one. Find a deal, they can be had. These guys selling on Ebay for $300 are ridiculous. My case is likely a rarity but I got mine locally for $40 off of a secondary app (OfferUp). Very good condition, two 4gb memory cards and 5 games included. 1000 OLED model. Anything under $100 makes Vita an absolute steal. Only go over $100 if it's brand new (unopened) and a special version/color of the device. If used in any way, stay under $100 because they can be had for that all day. You'll love it and I use it a lot more than my Switch Lite. If a hack comes around for Switch Lite one day that may change but I just can't get as excited about a device I have no homebrew control over.

ARM based processors are what bridged the gap. They have always been supremely powerful in a very small, power efficient package. That was what was even in the GBA and why it was rather impressive for the time. Now it's the Nvidia Shield chipsets, and the funny part is what they are using in the Switch now is supremely outdated. It could be MUCH more powerful if they'd only release an updated Switch Pro version or something.
