I'm from northern Wisconsin and yes you definitely prepare your car for the cold. blankets, and food at a minimum. lots of people keep a propane heater in the car too just in case. you also have to winterize your car too. Putting in less diluted antifreeze, low temp washer fluid, ice rated wiper blades, snow tires and covering the front of your radiator to trap engine heat are all common. some people even run different oil in the winter.

It actually turns into steam, not snow because the boiling water increases energy in the water and forces the water molecules apart and makes them freeze faster, so when you throw the boiling water it turns more into boiling water droplets

The hot water can freeze mid air because it creates a lot of vapor that instantly freezes. These small frozen crystals serve as starters for bigger crystals to form. The technical term is nucleation. The colt water has nothing that can instantly freeze, thus no small crystals to freeze around. So it does freeze, but from a state of vapor that started it all.

Old Dodge truck hoods make great sleds behind motorized vehicles. We used to use one in Twin Bridges, Montana, literally in town. The molecules are further apart as water temperatures increase. A boiled pot of water will freeze faster in the pot, then one with cold water. I always have three blankets I keep in my pickup. Even in the summer you can get stranded, and they can be handy. At least one firearm, multiple knives, food if I am doing more than a short trip, plus the usual tools. Hot tubs, and hot springs are best in the winter. Montana is loaded with hot springs with outdoor pools. I am glad you had a good time. Have a very merry Christmas!

Yes you absolutely need to have a winter bag of clothes in your trunk. Base layers, socks. snow pants, boots, parka. It all depends on what you wear normally and what you’d need to compensate without heat. Warm blankets or sleeping bags are also very smart. A shovel, kitty litter or sand is also good if you get stuck in the snow to get yourself out. Some of those hand warmers are a good idea and a few candles and matches/lighter as well. I’m from Canada and we always have a bag that stays in the trunk for the winter as well as bring certain things depending on what’s happening. It’s been -44 C most nights this week so you really need to be prepared!

In Iowa, it's -30, wind-chill -50, & were having a blizzard. Plows have been pulled from the roads. If you are ever in a snow storm and you end up in the ditch, Stay in the vehicle, many people try to walk home and don't make it. We carry extra clothes, blankets (wool) canned goods, dry food, candles, it's good to have a empty can so you can drink the snow if u have , and make sure u keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow if possible.

Maybe since water expands as it warms it means the hot water is much less cohesive, allowing it to more easily fling into smaller droplets, which freeze faster than larger droplets. Probably blasting cold water out of some sort of pressurized tube would break it up into smaller droplets and cause it to also freeze in the air.

@@stefan3816 yep, 10%, but cold liquid water expands to take up more volume when it warms (but not nearly 10%).

Yes. Warm clothes, a blanket, foods and snacks. Some places in Northern Canada if your car breaks down it's there until the snow melts. Snow plows might not see and plow over them!! Imagine being stuckin there!

Winter survival kits for sure. I just drove from Edmonton to Prince George. 800km across the mountains, with lots of no service areas. Food, water, sleeping bags, fire starter, TP, fill up at 1/2 tank(so you can idle if you breakdown). The windshield frosts from the top down at -40F on the highway if you put the heat on the feet for to long.

We're experiencing that same weather in Western Nebraska with the minus 60 wind chills & my wife and I keep our emergency backpacks in our vehicles with the 90% heat reflective body bags and regular blankets as well. Our packs also have "space blankets in them.

Yes Matt, in my car, but especially in my truck when I drove the northeast I always kept extra clothes blankets and a -60 degree mummy sleeping bag. The one time I was in northern Maine the windchill was -60. And damn that was brutally cold. But I always had a car-hart jumpsuit because we hauled ice cream at -20 and sometimes had to unload our own trailer

In Connecticut it doesn't really get into the negatives very often (although the wind chill tonight is supposed to be exactly that) so I don't carry a massive blanket or anything but I do have a wool blanket and a light jacket in my car. I also have a 50 pack of hand warmers that I bought last winter and have yet to open

North Mississippi was -25 wind chill at 4 am this morning. So much for warm southern weather. The coldest I've been in was Sioux City Iowa, -60. My HellCycle was the only bike that would run, so I did the beer runs to store 5 miles down the deserted highway and back to the hotel.
