You need an aldl cable dude. There’s no point in replacing parts that aren’t broken. In fact replacing unbroken parts can lead to doa parts. Now that part is bad and people assume that it’s fine. You can look at all your sensors very easily and see what’s going on. Then you can replace or troubleshoot an issue. But that egr valve is toast. Appreciate the videos, I’m just saying that most people throw parts at a tbi because of some guy in a forum replaced that part and it fixed his problem. These chevys have almost the same symptoms for any issues. I just got an aldl cable and hooked it up to a laptop with winaldl (free). Now I can watch everything in real time and log the data in certain situations. I just know I replaced half my sensors to have it be the fuel pump before. That was because of some guy in a forum.

It would be really helpful if you could make one adjustment in your videos... In this one, for example, you show how smooth the engine runs AFTER the egr fix, but not what the "occasional miss" looks like before hand.. Mine has a rhythmic "tic" in the tach at idle, and I would have liked to have seen if yours did that as well. (My phone doesn't show me comment responses, so I won't see it here, if you do). Please, in the future, try to show both before and after repairs. TNX! Also, I'm in Spokane and was really bummed to find you had been here all along! Would have been good to connect! Make a block off plate for your EGR and your millage should increase some. Particularly if yours is sticking. Hot nasty gases going into your engine is a bad idea from day 1 for engine longevity, fuel efficiency and performance. The EGR valve should only be open at idle and deceleration (high manifold vacuum). If it's sticking intermittently and random, that's a bad situation all round. As a minimum, replace it so it operates correctly. 2 bolts and a vacuum line or electrical connector. Not very expensive, gas is. Your engine will thank you.

But...the EGR system for GM TBI V8 vehicles only activates on part-throttle cruise. For example: Blocking it off with a block-off plate will not affect idle, and you will notice with OBDI engines (like your Suburban) you will only get a code at part-throttle cruise. Just saying. Though, your maintenance is still good advice, and I agree with Preventative Maintenance. GM V8's with TBI is kind of my thing, and I do enjoy watching you become an expert at maintenance and diagnoses for your GM TBI engine.

Your idle is slightly lower likely because you eliminated a vacuum leak. The bolts holding the EGR are great candidates for anti-seize. Any bolt associated with exhaust you should use anti-seize. Luckily my 03, 4.3 ltr. doesn't have and EGR valve which never was a really good idea. Best thing to do with EGR valve is to get a small piece of sheet metal, using the gasket as template, make a block off plate that goes between the gasket and valve, stop the exhaust gases from recirculating into the engine. But you didn't hear that from me. ;-)
@1RoadGarage

The EGR valve is part of my smog system and is checked when I get smogged thus I can’t remove it.
@x-man5056
@x-man5056 3 жыл бұрын
@@1RoadGarage Not saying remove it. Just slip the relatively slim sheet metal block plate between the gasket and EGR valve and reinstall it. You can take it back out before you take it to Gestapo smog inspection in Cali if you want but unlikely they will even notice it. It will have no effect at the exhaust pipe if you have good cats. NONE. I have done this with several cars in Cali, never an issue. If they do see it, just say a previous owner must have done it, take it out. Put it back in when you get home. Look in the manifold were EGR mounts, all that black carbon is bad JuJu for your engine. Most of it goes through your combustion chamber so what you see stuck in the manifold is not near all that went through your engine. EGR's had some minor affect on emissions on carbureted cars (particularly at idle) but EFI (including TBI) runs so much leaner and cleaner EGR is not really doing anything but clobbering the most important moving parts of your engine (pistons) with terribleness (abrasive debris). Voluminous microscopic chunks of hard carbon in your engine is good for mechanics and dealers but not engines.

I think it would be easier to just buy the gasket material and make your own, accidentally forgetting to make the holes on the inside of the gasket. Nobody would ever know unless/until they removed the EGR valve.
@x-man5056
@x-man5056 3 жыл бұрын
@@fredflintstone4715 You'd have to use asbestos or it would burn through in no time. If you use 18-20 gauge sheetmetal, you can make it slightly smaller than the gasket and body of the EGR. It would be almost impossible to see without dismantling. Another thing you can do that's really easy is get a golf tee, cut it in half, use the pointed end piece to block off the vacuum line.

A bit late to this, but your comment hits paydirt with me. 1989 K1500 5.7. Engine pings under load. Check vacuum, only 10". Tested EGR and pulled it. Looks okay. Pull the intake manifold and discover the EGR passage is totally clogged with carbon. You cannot see this by pulling the EGR. Jamming a screwdriver into the intake to clean the carbon, not good as carbon will fall into the engine. EGR needed not just for emissions, but to help prevent pinging. Not sure how those who delete prevent pinging?

Funny how those old trucks act when something is failing. I have a '95 chevy burb as well, and do nearly all of my own work on it. Had a high idle for a year or two and a check light in park or neutral that would throw a idle air control valve code after a couple minutes. Would turn off after putting back in gear. With so many technicians these days that can't diagnose anything unless a computer tells them what it is, often times it's cheaper (and more fun) to make an educated guess thru process of elimination. I figured out my issue wasn't the idle air at all despite the code. It was just over compensating for an old PCV valve cover GROMMET not holding vacuum. $4 piece of rubber after $150 charged at a shop for nothing.

Because nowadays to need the computer to read the data and see what isn’t right. Your supposed to verify what is actually causing it instead of just throwing parts at it. Every idle problem is not EGR related. Check your plug wires for proper seating on plug and distributor cap, particularly if they were recently replaced. You install cold wires on a cool engine. When it's later run, any air trapped in the plug wire boots at either end of the wire expands and can pop them slightly off the connector. You may hear them snapping, particularly on cold start up. I've had this happen several times. If they are all good, pull your plugs and recheck the gaps. NEVER install spark plugs without very careful gap setting. It DOES matter. If you can't locate the EGR valve on your engine, buy a Haynes manual (or equivalent) for your specific vehicle, about $15 at any auto parts store. They aren't great for everything, but basics like EGR location and tons of other things you'll need to know, often a god send. It will be handy, trust me. You can also Google the EGR location but the book will serve you well.

My 97 Tahoe had 360,000 when I sold it to my buddy. I'd still get 20mpg at 70. My friends son drove it from Washington to Utah and they go to the place they were going 3hrs early. They parked at a restaurant and it started to knock. He ended up spinning a bearing.

Fun summary! It's a component that is easy to overlook, even if it is less common as a cause of weird idle compared to vacuum leaks or IAC issues. One thing to remember is that vacuum closes the valve, it doesn't open it. During states of high vacuum, such as idle, the valve is designed to close so that it won't introduce inert exhaust gas back into the intake. When you press on the throttle, vacuum drops and the valve opens. A 'stuck open' valve causes stumbling idle because of those extra gasses, a stuck closed valve doesn't cause much a driver would notice.

Have you ever seen how strong the spark is that comes off a stock coil? MSDs are pretty, but I'm trying to imagine an aftermarket part made by anyone that lasts longer or is more dependable than a GM factory part. Break down in small town USA and try to get an MSD distributor cap. 😁 I might buy a couple stickers to put on my window. 😁

The Gm Tbi egr valve has another problem. The small egr passage gets clogged with carbon. I had to use a piece of braided steel cable chucked into a drill and used it like a rotorouter. It is a curved passage and it is very hard to clean out.

This is a very bad idea. That carbon is very hard and brittle. You sent shards of abrasive into your engine. They will go right into the cylinders. If the hole is blocked or mostly blocked, leave it that way. EGR is a bad for engines. If you are driven to clean that out, remove the manifold from the engine first.
@garyr7027
@garyr7027 3 жыл бұрын
Of course no need to remove the EGR to check it with a hand vaccum pump, otherwise you might end up replacing a gasket needlessly. Then there's the, make sure while you're at it, to check the vaccum line for leaks. Also, in some cases I've seen vehicles idle even worse with a "new" EGR valve as it throws off the fuel to air ratio until the ECM relearns. And or there's other unsolved issues causing it that don't show its ugly head till somethin gets fixed... welcome to the machine.

Another Fun Fact and Pro Tip: The EGR is the reason why EGR-equipped engines get better fuel economy at highway speeds. That’s when it’s functioning the most. When cleaning or replacing the EGR, inspect the port(s) feeding it. I once had a GM 3.1 MPFI with the supply port completely clogged and 3/4” deep with carbon buildup.
