Often I find myself getting fatigued just trying to watch your videos :) I challenge you to do one where you don't talk at all, or just a quick intro and out at the end - You might find this better for your own efforts as well.

When my compensator went bad, it would start fine cold, it was only after it warmed up that it sounded like that. I did get a new one before it quit completely. For those H-D haters, it gets real old listening to you. H-D tried to build a “modern” engine. The V Rod. It didn’t sell well. We buy Harleys for the vibration, the noise, the experience. If I wanted a sewing machine, I’d get a Gold Wing. I got what I wanted. Because my budget was limited, my Ultra Classic was 11 years old when I bought it. H-D has flaws. They all do. Other than the comp, it’s been a great bike. It has 65000 miles on it and I’m putting 8k per year on it at least.

Harley didn't build the V Rod, Porsche did, that's why it didn't sell, it wasn't a 'real' Harley. But if vibration and noise does it for you, all good.

I see a pattern of defensiveness in some of your comments, like this one. However, I agree, if you purchased a H-D for the vibration, the loud noise and the experience of constant break downs, you did buy the right brand. I had a springer softtail myself and the poor thing spent more time in the harley shop garage than my garage, but when it was running it was fun to ride. Take the critics with stride.

This reminded of something I pretty much had forgotten about. Way back in mid 90’s while out riding my 89fxr on interstate I felt something amiss. Pulled over figuring compensator loosened from crank. Had to walk around and find beer and pop cans to cut up to drain primary fluid into. Pulled cover and sure enough.. it was loose. I always carry a small pipe wrench in tool kit and it opened just enough to get hold of the 1 1/2” nut. Had to find a big enough rock to whack it hard enough to tighten to get going again. Made it back home just fine. Book says not to use an impact to tighten that but but I wasn’t going to chance it again. Some loctite and impact and never happened again. I had tried in past to tighten that thing but has high torque value. Myself, brother and neighbor tried torquing that thing before but nearly impossible to hold engine from moving while torquing. One guy work torque wrench while other 2 try holding bike from moving while in gear and holding breaks! Fun times working on old bikes. Thanks for jogging the memory.

Hey Jess, check out Legends Suspension fork tube kit for your Dyna. Maybe you can contact Legends and see if they will let you have front and rear suspension at cost or maybe comp you the parts if you put their stickers on your bike and show them some love? Harrow can install them for you and they have a lifetime warranty. Your girl and you will both love them! Also, you might check into a compensator eliminator. My Son runs one on his FXR And I'm doing some engine upgrades to my RoadKing and I'm probably going to go that way as well. If you do stay with a compensator, you might ask Harlow to upgrade you to a Screamin' Eagle compensator cuz I understand that the compensator on the 96" is basically the same as the one used on the 88" and they aren't really up to the task of your more powerful motor. Good Luck!

Cue the "if you just go with this brand you'll never have problems" comments See multiple saying triumph is the be all end all. Ignoring regulator/ rectifier issues. Stator failures. Cam chain tensioner issues. Engine whine anyone? Fact is if you actually ride a bike more than a hundred miles a year you will have issues and failures. Period. The "12000 miles in 5 years" comments on whatever brand you choose is no indicator of reliability.

Makes all the difference. No high speed death wobble. Swing arm goes through the trans case not the frame. Your rear wheel is rubber mounted to the engine. I also own a 2017 Triumph Street Cup 900 cc. Change my fluids myself because the dealership would over fill the engine oil sump.

I went riding this past weekend. Olympia, WA has a Toy Run every year (it was started by ABATE of WA back in the '70s but got too big for the organization to manage so a coalition of clubs/organizations now runs it). Anyway, due to Covid this year the run was "virtual" which means you turn in a toy at one of the designated spots and you can buy a Toy Run pin if you want (I did). Saturday (the day the run would have been) was sunny and low 50s so I jumped on the King rode to the usual run site and rode the route, a Toy Run of one, I was surprised no one else showed up. It was a great day for a run and today looks like the last clear day for awhile so guess I'll get the girl out and put some more miles on her before Winter really sets in. Hope you girl gets home soon, Jess. Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Harley has monkied around with compensators for years and they screw them up on a regular basis. My 2012 Dyna Switchback started making noise on my 4 corners ride and 2 dealerships told me "that's normal, all Harleys sound like that" B.S. they don't ! I finally found a dealership in So Cal who figured out the bolt holding the Screaming Eagle comp sprocket on was a couple of thousands longer then the hole it went into and the bolt bottomed out before full torque was applied. A shim or two and she sounded just like brand new again. If you can get the Extended Service Protection plan (extended warranty) including wheels and tires. I have had 6 tires replaced at a cost of 50 bucks each. Well worth the money for the warranty. No one take this as bashing Harley as I still have the FXE Superglide I bought Nov 11, 1977, and my 1998 FLHTPI former police bike. They do require a bit of looking at but anything mechanical does also.

Glad to hear you didn't get stuck somewhere waiting for a tow truck. My suggestion is to get the necessary tools and learn your way around the bike. If you yourself don't feel comfortable learning I know Jordan would be. It's well worth the investment in tools and the knowledge gained learning how to fix it yourself is worth it's weight in gold. I can't even add up how much I've saved in labor charges over the past fifteen years but I know it's many thousands.

Great you had a ride on the Dyna. It looks cool and has a great sounding pipe. That starting issue to me sounds like a eg starter motor issue or power to the starter motor. I'm sure the Harley Dealer will sort that issue out easily. I wouldn't normally do anything with the forks on a service unless the fork seals are leaking or forks are spongy etc. Forks cost alot to pull apart & may not be needed to be touched at all.

I also have an 2001 Yamaha XJR1300SP Yellow, I have had 4 of these and they are brilliant to. It's the same with cold war era Soviet Union Motorcycles. I found a Dnepr MT-11 sidecar motorcycle in a barn. It was made in the KMZ factory in Kiev Ukraine when it was a Soviet Union block country. Russia used the Ukrainians as slave labor and the bike was built that way. I had to take everything apart and rebuild it properly. All the valves in the heads leaked. The head gaskets leaked. The piston ring gaps were all in line. Then there was the broken drill bit left in the oil gally feeding the rear crankshaft bearing. The Dnepr was imported in 1992 after the collapse of the Soviet Union. After rebuilding I rode it from the middle of March to the end of October with no problems at all. How it's getting a paint job and all new rubber to make it better than it rolled out of KMZ.

Like you, I have the multiple motorcycles so I can decide which one I'm going to ride. For me, it all depends on the ride. If it's a distance I go with my Street Glide, if I'm with the guys on back roads, I fire up the Softail Slim. I'm going bar hopping locally, I get on my custom bobber. Older bikes require a little love... My custom bobber is a 2001 Dyna WG and I have my share of fix repairs, right now is one of those times as I need a new starter relay. I recommend as they get older, find a good bike mechanic and works on the side outside the dealership...saves you money AND you have 1 mechanic who really gets to know your bike.

The bike only had 21,000km (13,000 miles) and the starter drive and ring gear were already showing wear from the primary chain being too tight. Do yourself a favor and spend the money on either the Pro Twin Man-O-War or the Baker Comp. I put the Screamin Eagle Comp in my 2008 Night Train when it went bad a few years back and all was great for awhile but now occasionally mine will bang on a hot start now.

That seems to happen to me often, it's just maddening! Seemingly,, noone understands when you tell them you are in a hurry so you can get home and ride! I've finally learned to try and ride first if I can especially this time of year. I'm in NC, so I guess our riding season is longer than yours but being a southerner, I just can't take much cold weather. I'm a wimp when it comes to temperature. 😜

Don.t know what that part does but 25000 miles seems like a very short life time. Hate to say your probably going to love your scrambler more all the time. I have 1999 triumph Thunderbird and I only had one situation that I consider a breakdown. The throttle cable broke and lucky for me I could turn up the idle on the carbs and made it back to where I was staying and wasn't stranded. If you take care of your Triumph it will take care of you. Never owned a Harley so I can't speak to the reliability. There are always jokes about them being broken more that being reliable but I hate throwing stones because Karma can get you. Did have a friend recently who bought a used Harley from a dealer and it was in the shop 3 times before he made the first payment so he told them to give him another bike and that seems to be better for him. Winter sucks soooo much. Be Good :)

To-do list: panniers and bags for the Triumph. Not to be lazy, but could you compare what Triumph charges (aftermarket included) to Harley? These Scramblers are something of a different animal. Next for me: deliver a 1948 Indian Chief to your door so your husband can fix it up for you. (Don't wait up. This will be a while.) It must be said: Harley left a sour taste after refusing to hire me some years ago. Not to put too fine a point on it, but I take the opportunity to make them eat their words as often as I can. Next: scheme to ride until the Harley returns.

crap, that sucks but at least ya made it back home. back when i used to have a harley mine made same noise and wound up being bad battery. voltage not high enough to keep starter fully engaged and slip out of ring gear while cranking and nasty noises followed. i am sure dealer will get ya fixed up. go ride the scrambler and hit up some back roads. much more fun anyway.

If you ride fairly mellow, put a hard sprocket in (no springed compensator), you will never have to replace it again. Or, go with Baker (more expensive, likely will not break down).

Man I argued tooth and nail about that stupid compensator. HD didn't want to do ANYTHING. Really turned me off to the MOCO. 09 SG, which I love, it's a battleship. All I wanted was the upgraded compensator for the old compensator price , I'd install it myself. But nooooooo HD wouldn't dare help a customer out. Going Aftermarket when this second one starts giving me issues again. They all seem to go around 35-40k. Good luck with yer bike.
