What amazes me is how he can so perfectly stay perfectly on-key through modulations with such rapid playing. Now I've heard some gospel pianists who might "seem" to be hitting the wrong keys a lot. As a result, it may work on a "spicy" musical level, but sometimes it's hard to tell if they're spicy or just making mistakes; Anthony always seemed to nail everything with such perfection of style choices and precision.

Anthony Burger died at age 44. Many feel that he is the finest gospel pianist that ever lived. He spent the last ten years playing for the Gaither Vocal Band. He last played on a cruise ship. Fifteen hundred people were on the cruise, vacationing during the day, and attending gospel concerts at night. The fourth night out, Anthony Burger had just played a piano solo of “We Shall Behold Him.” About five minutes later, during the concert, he collapsed of a massive heart attack and died instantly at the piano.

Anthony on one take on all 10 songs, never missing a note was mind boggling and inspiring. Id try not ask to many questions, but couldnt resist a few times, getting that all important intro to a song called Earthquake we had as our album title. Never will i forget it. Was amazing, A couple years later Eldridge had got word I had auditions with the Mccameys and they hired me on the spot. Got a phone call from him basically saying if you leave this group they're done , and i assume killed the deal with that. So I stayed the group a bit longer, just long enuff to be confronted by a couple of members of the group they heard, i was ,,,,,,,,,,,wait for it,,,, Yes that question of are you gay? I looked at those 3 elder gentlemen who I considered family And said to them these words I am the same exact person you met years ago the night you hired me And Yes I am. I mean really who would thought that a gay guy would be in a Southern gospel band, Unheard of, really? That was the end of my career with the councellor. quartet of Somerset Kentucky
