Regarding my HALLOWEEN analysis, posted a few days ago, one of the distributors seems unable to recognize that I was promoting their product for free and that my use of their clips falls under Fair Use. It may take a while to get that dispute resolved (if it does get resolved). So I've uploaded this clip from my new video-in-progress. The full version is probably gonna clock in at around the 2 hr mark so it's unlikely there'll be any new uploads on here this week. Enjoy!

Peter swerves to avoid a dead deer, which leads to his sister's death. Later in the movie one of Peter's teachers mentions Iphigenia. She had to be sacrificed because her father accidentally killed one of Artemis' sacred deer. Iphigenia's brother Orestes was known for his madness. Orestes' mother Clytemnestra kills his father, Agamemnon, and Orestes later avenges his father's death by killing her. Really not sure how deep these connections are supposed to be but to me the deer and the later mention of Iphigenia are suggestive.

Paimons musical accompaniment IS in the film via the track “Reborn”. It’s said he’s accompanied by an army of lesser demons and imps with trumpets and cymbals, which is exactly what we hear. The reason they made slight changes is to avoid invocation of the actual demon on the audience, they even changed the pronunciation from PIE-MON to PAY-MON. Also the image we see of Paimon on a camel was drawn by aster :)

My take on Bebal and Abalam is that Annie and her mother's headless bodies were never possessed by Paimon (as he hates being in a woman's body), but rather it was his servants Bebal and Abalam working to push the son to his breaking point so Paimon could possess him at his weakest. It explains why those headless bodies are still animated and the closest to his feet(his most loyal servants) even after Paimon has found his permanent host in the son's body.

6:27 - I think we do see Paimon's two accompanying demons. Once we see Peter's body possessed by Paimon, we still see Annie's decapitated body floating around, still possessed. I'm not sure if you ever had a chance to read the book "The Exorcist" but in the book (I'm positive it's not mentioned in the movie, at all) there is a conversation between Father Karas and Detective Kinderman where they discuss that witches would either have their heads turned around, loss their heads, or that a sign of a witch was having their head turned backwards. I think the association of decapitation in "Hereditary" comes from the same folklore or occult symbolism that "The Exorcist" drew from. I think the association with three, too, may be a mockery of the holy trinity. It's a belief in paranormal research that signs of a demonic presence always comes in threes -- scratches, knocking, and 3am. If not, it's a popular plot device in storytelling.

This has to be the best horror movie I've seen lately, haven't got the same kick out of anything horror since. @RealLukeWilson5 жыл бұрын
The great thing about all those old texts of mythology and folklore is that so many of them have been told and changed over time, allowing a lot of creative license wiggle room. Like, most Brothers Grimm stories are just the first written versions of them, and there are countless other slightly different tellings throughout the centuries. There probably isn’t really a “definitive” lore for Paimon, which means that Ari Aster’s depiction is just as valid as Crowley’s (who, let’s face it, was more of a poser anyway).

Thank you for the thorough analysis. Films like Hereditary are proper cautionary tales against the Crowley-styled conjuring of foreign gods. Unfortunately there's no resolution like in more traditional films like The Exorcist. A24, the studio behind this film and other recent occult films like Witch, seems to have one foot in the horrors of occultism and the other in the postmodern world where there's no real, cultural resolution to these issues. The west has psychoanalyzed the original meaning away from any symbolic resolutions. So today, audiences are always left with these awful endings where (spoiler alert) people just succumb to these demons and things get worse because we have no response.

I like when writers/directors/producers take entities from real-life folklore, demonology, and spirituality and alter it to fit their style. It shows that the creators are willing to creatively adapt preexisting subject matter to fit their stories. That's better than copying preexisting material in its entirety.

Regarding the music part at 5:48, Aster confirmed that the music in the opening shot of the outhouse is Paimon's arrival. Complete with his voice and camel's hooves.
@bradramsey6835 жыл бұрын
Hey Rob, just a thought here about Paemon not having his accompanying band. I would actually argue that this does happen in the film, as if you listen to the song “Reborn” by Colin Stetson on the soundtrack, it has the most orchestral sound to it, which I interpret as the otherworldly, unholy band heralding Paemon’s arrival.
@Jalmerk5 жыл бұрын
I like to think that the music at the end is actually diegetic, that what we hear is Paimons following of lesser demons playing otherworldly music.

Paimon is a teacher of the arts and sciences including astronomy, fine arts, agriculture etc... this movie is a complete diversion from the description of him in just about every text he’s discussed. Turning him into a scary apparition is weird. Traditionally he is said to have both angels and demons under his command.

Pardon my nitpicking! However, The Lesser Key of Solomon is actually a grimoire of ceremonial/ritual magic, not Witchcraft! However, some traditions of Wicca and Witchcraft, especially Wicca, have adopted a number of techniques and practices from Ceremonial/Ritual Magic. Traditional Wicca, such as Gardnarian Wicca, and Alexandrian Wicca make much use of Ceremonial Magic in their rites, as well as their tools. Non-Wiccan Witchcraft tends to use a bit less Ceremonial Magic elements and such. Although it varies between groups and practitioners. Awesome video though!!!! :)
@chocolatebunnies63764 жыл бұрын
Gabriel Aderre I think it should be noted that the distinctions you’re making, and your definitions of these terms, are very modern constructs, not part of the natural development of language. «Wicca» got its modern meaning in the latter part of the twentieth century. The word «goetia» is in meaning related to «witchcraft», and making strict distinctions between different types of magic only makes sense within the framework of a belief-system or a fantasy-setting.

@collativelearning Another great video! One thing to point out though. When they initially do the seance where Annie becomes possessed, the first voice heard is NOT Paemon. That was actually Charlie’s spirit. After some initial confusion on Charlie’s part while in Annie’s body, Annie is then possessed by Paemon and Charlie is forced out. I believe this is the only moment in the film where we get to see Charlie as a regular (non-possessed) little girl. At all other points in the movie Charlie is possessed by a weakened version of Paemon which is why she acts so strangely throughout the movie.

I would like to add I think the two headless corpses are supposed to be vessels for Paimon's two demon servants, or left and right hands. He is summoned alone, So it is pretty much cannon his two most devoted followers are going to be accompanying him, not a legion.

You mentioned in a previous video regarding Hereditary about the sound effects at the very beginning, in particular when the camera zooms in on the miniature of the family house. Could that be the clopping of camel feet of Paimon entering their home? Could the buzzing of the flies be the "musicians" that accompany Paimon?

I am an occutist and witch and have actively worked with Paimon. He is a Persian entity and rumor has it he was a king who was able to ascend to a very high level in the afterlife upon death. I cant substantiate this but what I can vouche for is that he provides good familiars that will help u learn. He also prefers to be called King Paimon. Yes he is one of the 9 demonic kings and has more legions under his command then any other of the other 72 goetic "demons", 200×2000=400,000 spirits under his control. I personally think that he was a God worshipped somewhere in ancient Persia as a good portion of the goetic "demons" were Gods not actual demons. This term demon comes from the word Daimon meaning spirit. The Abrahamic faiths later villanized these gods and the word daimon itself bc these entities were a threat to the power of their tribal god Yhwh who is actually a Canaanite storm deity which can be compared to Thor. King Paimon is actually very cool. He loves to teach and is willing to work with most that are respectful to him for offerings of incense, candles, wine, or honey (these are common offerings that can be given to most spirits). His specialty that is not listed in the goetia is the art of persuasion, the functionality of the human mind, and programming within psychology. He basically can push intent into someone to change their mind and or viewing things in one way or another. He has also been known to appear as a large cat during meditation. He is not Azazel and it is true that he is very close to Lucifer which means he is a direct emanation of him or within the Lucifer cluster. Along with his 2 companion subsidiary spirit he also has a Duke underneath him called Dantalion who is also very helpful. More information can be found on him with these... I am posting this before watching this video, but one of my favorite aspects of watching Hereditary for the first time (I hadn't seen a trailer, just RedBoxed it on Rob Ager's suggestion) was that it had surprises from the first 3 minute opening until like the last 10 seconds of the film. Sure, the film hinted that Paimon was a demon or whatever, but the actual reveal at the end was awesome enough to make every additional viewing of the film a different experience than the first experience. Not better, but just an additional way to watch the movie for the extra experience. Both viewings are awesome (the first, and 2nd to infinity)

Ari Aster has said the original cut of the film was over three hours in length, and the script available online has crucial scenes that fill out the story even further. It's a very dynamic work and what horror should aspire to be. It's a high-tension movie that moves at a very leisurely pace and spares us cheap jump scares. Midsommar is in different ways equally disturbing, especially after seeing the director's cut this past weekend; it's another story of inevitable doom - once you go in, you can never leave.
@The_Tea_Brewer2 жыл бұрын
The Ars Goetia is not a "Witchcraft Book". It is a book on conjuration and summoning, along with a demonology dictionary. Yes, it is a grimoire; however, the magick performed / instructed within the text is ceremonial in nature whereas in witchery it is more folk based forms of magick. This would be considered sorcery and high / ceremonial magick.

That book being written by “the dead hand” is most likely some occult reference to automatic writing, which is doing a seance to invoke a spirit with a pen and paper in your hands, and the spirit writes its text through you as a conduit. Robert Plant said the stairway to heaven lyrics were actually written this way, which makes the whole play it backwards actually scary and seem legit.

The changing of Paimon's sigil to 3 figures rather than 4 seems to have been to better fit within the film's theme of "three." Paimon, and the lore surrounding him in the film, seems to be somewhat of a corruption of the Holy Trinity and the important biblical number of 3. Triangles are a common occurrence, the picture of him has three severed heads on the camel, he required three sacrifices in the form of the mother, the daughter, and the unholy spirit, and the cultists outright say that they reject the trinity at the end of the film.
