I am a 42 year old college senior and these Crash Course videos have been AMAZING!! I am taking my last course to graduate; an accelerated summer course in, of all things, Biology! :'( Having ZERO previous classes in Chemistry, Biology or Anatomy, I would have never passed this course. I had to learn 4 chapters a week and take an exam on the covered material. The Biology crash course series has been my lifeline in helping me visualize what I am learning and make the concepts easier to grasp and retain. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU HANK GREEN!!! I have received an C on one exam and a B on the other, thanks to you!! Your method of instruction is simply awesome! Keep up the great work!

Hey fun fact: the allele for dwarfism is dominant. One more, I can't resist this one: the gene that allows you to grow hair in your ears when you age is located on the Y-chromosome, so only men can do it.

You did not mention crossing over, the reason I mention it is because in my case this has taken place. I am Bald as are my father, my paternal grandfather and great grandfather as well as my paternal male cousins. All my relatives on my mother's side have full heads of hair. As baldness is carried on the X chromosome the only reason I can see is that a piece of X must have broken off and attached to Y.
@BrutakasTutorials10 жыл бұрын
If the gene is carried on the X chromosome, since males don't have a second to X to counteract the recessive bald trait, that trait will always be expressed. In both males and females, both sex chromosomes have an effect on the resulting child. There's no need for a piece from the X to attach to the Y - If it's on the X, it'll be expressed. In any case, even though it isn't the answer to your situation, crossing over IS talked about in the episode on meiosis. (Ep 13)
@royandrews79410 жыл бұрын
The reason I figured it out the way I did was because my X comes from my mother NOBODY in her family has been bald as far I can trace Yet every male in my paternal line HAS been bald since my paternal great grand father. As all the men in my paternal line must have received their X from their mothers and it is members of my paternal line , not maternal line , that are bald how could that have happened, if this gene is carried on the X, Brutaka Vex ?
@BrutakasTutorials10 жыл бұрын
Roy Andrews Because it is guaranteed to show in men if they have the trait but NOT always show in women. Men have XY. Which means, if they get their X from their mom (which all men do, because if they got their X from their dad, they'd be a girl), and the maternal is carrying that gene, the men will be bald. However, if the women are carrying the gene in their X, that gene is recessive. So if their other X chromosome (since women are XX) has the dominant for not bald, then they wont be bald. What's most likely happening is that your maternal line has the heterozygous combination of this trait (one X has the trait, the other X has the dominant, not-bald version). However, when the next generation is being created, these women have the recessive gene hidden in there too, and so they pass that gene on to the children. In the boys, there's no X to counter it, so they end up bald. In the girl, the X passed from the dad must have been dominant, canceling out the bald X. While it's unlikely to happen so many times in a row without the mom passing a dominant trait to a son, it's at least possible. The idea that a piece breaks off the X and attaches to the Y is not only likely impossible, but would also mess A LOT of stuff up.
@royandrews79410 жыл бұрын
Thanks Butaka Vex,but the males in my material line all have a full head of hair I know in mammalian species the male is XY (unlike avian species where the male ZZ) also X is much longer than Y that's why I thought a piece from longer, chromosome could break off and attach to the shorter chromosome, of course this could be very hard in the case linked genes that are very close (Example the gene for blue egg and pea comb, in the Aracona and Amarica breeds of chicken) I did several test crosses ( over a period of 20years) in Muscovy Ducks, Several Breeds of chickens and pigeons for sex linked phenotypic traits ( primary feather colour and feather)pattern carried on the Z chromosome of course these are all Avian species where the female ZW. Thank you for your conversation, have you any ideas that may show how .a recesive trait that normally carried on X can appear on the Y ?
@BrutakasTutorials10 жыл бұрын
Roy Andrews It *wouldn't* show on the Y. It can't. The Y doesn't carry that allele, or a place for it.Similarly, if a trait appears on only the Y chromosome, it will never sneak onto an X chromosome, meaning that girls would never get that trait.

Fun fact - 97% of Koreans carry the ABCC11 gene linked to dry earwax, and have no body odor as a result. For anyone visiting Korea, take deodorant with you - its remarkably expensive and hard to find as no one needs it there lol. Another fun fact - people with dry earwax use a type of small spoon to sort of scoop the dry earwax out. My husband (who is Korean) told me he never understood what Q-tips were for until he met me and saw how I was using it to get out my wet earwax lol

Hank. I think that you goofed up at 6:07 there is no way she would inherit a big W from the father because the father had dry wax so that means he is homozygous recessive (small w small w). it is a small mistake, however a viewer that does not know would probably get confused. the mom would pass the big W and dad would pass the small w

I was wondering if I was the only one who noticed this.
@marshmellowjjigae9 жыл бұрын
Not so. You incorrectly assumed that the ear with feather growing out of it has dry ears. Hank made no mention of phenotypes, only that the mother inherited traits from the grandparents.

Draconus Nex O I see now. the shapes he added to the ears were not what was being expressed sorry. So the spiky ear is a male ear and the soft ear is female. In my opinion that is a bit confusing and not a good representation should of just stuck to pink and blue
@getthegoods4209 жыл бұрын
siltoribio your right the only way you can have dry ear wax is if you had (ww) if he had any W he would have had wet earwax because it was the dominant allele.

does this mean I need to spray deodorant in my ears?

I like this video more than the newer ones. The zoom on Hank's face and the humour seems less forced, like they spent a few days casually writing the script and threw in things that were actually funny

hi hank! crash course videos are very helpful for refreshing understanding of material - but I'm never really sure if I remember it. it would be really helpful if at the end of videos there was a short quiz to test understanding/memory of the material. just a suggestion. thanks for all the help!
