The New Culture Forum proudly presents Heresies, Episode 4: "Britain's Silent Cultural Revolution", presented by Emma Webb (#NCFHeresies). In the year of Black Lives Matter protests following the death of the American George Floyd, we have seen Britain in the grip of a revolutionary and iconolastic fervour. Statues have been toppled and defaced, historic buildings and streets renamed, priceless historic collections "decolonized" and the legacy of great figures debased & sullied. How worried should we be?
Great Britain is home to a delicate ecosystem of political, legal and cultural institutions, they are part of a rich tapestry woven by the people who have called this land home for over a thousand years. Over the generations our institutions have been the custodians of our culture and identity, but, in recent decades, have we failed to be theirs?
Featuring interviews with:
* Charles Moore
* Giles Udy
* Nigel Biggar

David Hume was the finest British thinker in my opinion. How can a University just throw him away because a few historically illiterate students cry a little bit?

Might be because they need to put bums in seats in order to pad their, "compensation packages", or simply to remain in business, so they are willing to pander to the lowest common denominator. And many of those "bums" come from highly monied families. University administrators are keenly aware of this.

“There will be no curiosity, no enjoyment of the process of life. All competing pleasures will be destroyed. But always-do not forget this, Winston-always there will be the intoxication of power, constantly increasing and constantly growing subtler. Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless. If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face-forever. War is a way of shattering to pieces, or pouring into the stratosphere, or sinking into the depths of the sea, materials which might otherwise be used to make the masses too comfortable, and hence, in the long run, too intelligent.” 1984 by George Orwell

Academics cook up these ideas and propagandize the young, but the far greater danger lies with the lawyers and civil servants who turn these ideas into reality, often quite stealthily, such that they are a fait accompli, usually with the unquestionable protective coating of, "human rights".

@@gusgone4527 I believe many would thoroughly agree with you. This lunacy has to stop. It's my experience that so many ordinary people are just so literally switched off to MSM and all the other wokeism purveyors. Here's just one little vignette...last week, a supermarket delivery driver, a regular mid-30s hard-working guy, made an offhand little comment about something that sounded wokey and I actually said, 'Oh you mean all that stuff coming from the woke gang?!' He looked gleekit (gormless, for English people!) and asked,'What's that?' He hadn't even heard of 'woke'. So I briefly explained with a couple of media examples. He immediately knew what I was talking about and told me in no uncertain terms that he was so sick of telly that he ditched his TV and just watches other and alt media online. He thought it a great plus that he doesn't have to pay the BBC's -extortion tax- licence fee any more. Point is that ordinary people are repulsed and leaving these woke idiots behind in their droves.

1) Slavery was the norm for most of human history, and almost every civilisation benefitted from it. Britain's involvement in it is unremarkable, except that it contributed greatly to its eventual abolition. 2) African rulers travelled to Britain to plead with the British to _not_ end slavery. This is never mentioned. 3) Britain cannot be "decolonised" because the UK has never been a colony. "Decolonisation" is code for "Anti-British".

Sad to say, many politicians fall into this category. The fight back will come from the strong of mind, the people regarded as 'ordinary', the people who have a real sense of identity. @@egverlander Oh goodness - you're welcome to America right now ...! I'm north in Canada, which can be pretty woke but it's not the country whose history and culture is in my soul, so I'm not so bothered by it. One theory (not mine) as to why this attitude is so prevalent now is the demise of faith in the modern world. Personally I don't subscribe to that, being a committed atheist myself, and definitely not woke, but I suppose if a person's personality requires some "other" to believe in, then perhaps wokism will suffice. It's very extreme, and Calvinism and Puritanism was (is!) also very extreme, and based on the destruction of the "other". USA was founded on religious Puritanism. I think the woke movement originated in USA, so that might be your answer to your question. Many people seem to yearn for certainty in an uncertain life, and wokeism is nothing if not utterly convinced of its superiority.

Six or seven years ago, I did what I thought was going to be a Masters degree in Music Technology at a U.K. university. It turned out to be a Postmoderism degree. Deleuze, Derrida, Foucault, Guattari…these names were mentioned all the time. I remember thinking, ‘what the fuck has any of this got to do with music technology’? It seemed shoehorned in for the sake of it. And the implication was obvious: ‘if you want your degree, you must mention these philosophers at least once in your dissertation.’ I jumped through the hoops and got the degree, but I’ve not been back. There’s definitely an agenda going on. I thought it was just this institution and the interests of the tutors there: I’m now discovering that it seems to be endemic.

At 50 mins the chap who is a historian - must be viewed as being as lazy (by repeating what others have said) as those he previously criticised for not doing any research. Colston, was a trader. Not a slaver and he never owned any slaves. He lived for 84 years, traded for about 60 and for just 12 of these was part of the Royal African Company - which did buy & sell slaves as a small part of it's dealings (all slaves were bought from local chiefs or Arab slaver traders). But, NO evidence was found by Bristol Uni that he joined any of those ventures. He headed the company for just 1 year, then sold up and left and we don't know why. So as he had not invested in those ventures, you could draw the conclusion that he didn't agree with them. We do know he made his money from trading wine & fruit from Iberian peninsular, selling cloth & financing. The statue was in recognition that he then bestowed his wealth on Bristol. But lets not let the facts get in the way of the agenda. If the city of Bristol decide they wish to be disassociated with Colston, then his endowments to be city should be returned to his descendants.

Brilliant documentary which clearly articulates what the common man understands to be happening in their ‘green and pleasant land’ yet can’t express their frustration by the ‘noise’ and heavy handed ideology sweeping over us like a storm that can’t be stoped, can’t be reasoned with using what we thought was ‘our British culture’. There is a Britishness that, while not perfect, is us. We’ve learned to live with the quirkiness of what it means to be British. We, in the main, don’t want to lose that distinctiveness. Whether it be Immigration being foisted on us, or the extreme leftist/socialist ideology that seems to be active in university. Among our governments in recent times, or sadly among certain privileged community who don’t appear to have to live cheek by jowl with the consequences. What has nerves been aired, for perhaps fear of being branded a racist, is this: when you have several ethic groups from differing cultural backgrounds, it is simply not possible to expect these groups to live in harmony. They might for a while until there is a ‘culture clash’. We must acknowledge that anyone who is different from you does create a ‘fear’ divide. And fear is the driving force behind such tension. We are afraid of anything that is different from us, that’s just a basic fact. I can cite many examples, but practically all riots are on racial grounds. The British government, in its drive for cheap labour could not have imagined what would result. But they should have, if Heath didn’t despise ‘prophet Enoch Powell. Alas, we are where we are.

These changes have been taking place for decades, drip by drip, most people work hard to pay their bills and haven't fully noticed until recently due to a very obvious acceleration with BLM, Antifa. I lived in France for 3 decades, returned to England in late 2015 and I'm still in culture shock. My 1st reaction was, where has the music gone? I turned on the TV and it was where have the men gone? Was doing a translation for a contemporary arts centre in Belgium and the works weren't in oil on canvas but human excrement on canvas, but I already knew about the ugliness going on in the arts world - unmade bed, pile of bricks, etc... It's particularly obvious in the English speaking world because of this awful self-loathing that I don't relate to - the French are proud to be French, proud of their flag and national anthem... But because all white Western nations have to share their countries with half the planet, who knows where this will lead to... A group of Conservative MPs has formed a group called The Common Sense Group to fight against this Woke destruction of what to most of us are obvious facts. Let's hope this is only the beginning in a very necessary fight back before our civilisation is completely destroyed.

I thought this programme asked a lot of good questions but part of the problem is these old men in leather armchairs trying to reason their way out of trouble. The Left want to bring everything down, all our history, and the greens want to take away our cars and foreign holidays. Old men sitting in leather chairs are no threat to the Left. People have to start getting ugly. Putting their collective feet down and saying, "This is ours and you aren't going to take it away from us". Virtually everything is paid for by the millions of working class in this country and we need to stand strong.

@@mesolithicman164 I agree with what you say BUT I don't agree with calling men with a lot of knowledge and experience "old men in leather armchairs" - ageism is also a major problem in today's Western society - we all need to stand together, young and not so young, very well educated and not so well educated. It's very important that we all fight together and use each others knowledge and strengths and never denigrate anyone because of their age, social class or indeed whether they are a practising Christian or not. We all agree what the problem is and we must all stand strong against all this destructive Woke ideology.

How can we actually be subject to this insanity? It's perfectly OK for some to have these views, to each his own, but it is absolutely crazy to let children dictate to adults.
@anotherfreediver3639

There was a long tradition in both Stalinist Russia and in Pol Pot's Cambodia, and I dare say other such regimes, of having children denounce adults before they were dealt with by the State. The young are now the darlings of the Left, because they can be manipulated, whereas us old f@rts can only fall back on facts and logical argument, neither of which hold much sway in the anti-intellectual court of wokeness .. it's all about 'the narrative', you know.

I partly blame our education system. I’m very thankful that my son had the wisdom to leave formal education at 16 and get an apprenticeship. He’s now 24, runs his own business and realises what a good decision that was. Many of his school friends went on to uni and don’t have the same understanding of the world as he does, nor are they working. The few he encouraged to get an apprenticeship are all doing really well, none of them are without work and some have also started their own businesses. I feel sorry for the young people who aren’t able to think for themselves, they don’t realise they’re being played.
