I'm an Ex-Mormon living in Utah, so I absolutely loved it. Also, it's worth noting that Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East are both Ex-Mormons in real life, which is probably why they seemed so authentic.

I'm a non-practicing Mormon and I loved the movie too. I don't know about you but there were a few things they got wrong but overall I loved the movie. I think it’s a wonderful study of the way that those who are controlled are aware of their controllers and learn how to appease and manipulate them back. The sisters demonstrate fabulous dissembling, protecting themselves by appearing less intelligent than they really are. Folks seem to disagree about how happy the sisters were to talk to Mr Reed in the 2nd room. I have heard folks say that they seemed to want to engage in the debate. I would argue that this is a prime example of guarding your true feelings to protect yourself against a malicious controlling force.
@loganz20939Ай бұрын
Great analysis , also felt that grants character Mr. Reed could see through the lack of intelligence the 2 girls were showing. To me he knew they were a lot more intelligent than they were portraying

I will see this for sure. Any kind of a creepy religious theme is always intriguing. One that kind of flew under the radar that i highly recommend would be St. Maud.

Might be my favorite movie of the year so far. Positives: Love the questions raised by grants character and the metaphors and analogies he uses. But also how the film looks at all angles and flaws in each characters thinking. Certain aspects of the film reminded me of a certain French film and if you’ve seen that French film you would know. Mixed: Some of the character decisions were questionable but weren’t a huge issue to get a negative for me. Negatives: The intro of this movie just did not work for me and the jokes didn’t land at all. So if you take that out pretty much a faultless film.
@LockeDemosthenes2Ай бұрын
@@loganz20939 one negative I had was that one shot with the girl running through the scale model at the end. It felt really out of place stylistically, and I suspect it only existed to be put in the trailer. Also, I agree with the humor in the first scene being awkward and not really landing. It's also absurd that two Mormon missionaries would be openly talking about pornography considering the religion has a total zero tolerance policy for watching it (like, missionaries are often sent home if their caught viewing it).
@loganz20939Ай бұрын
@@LockeDemosthenes2 yeah agreed on the joking in the intro. Felt it was really out of place and didn’t work at all. Was a bad start for a film that would be discussing pretty serious topics.

I completely agree with you. I'm a non-practicing Mormon and I enjoyed the movie. There were a few things they got wrong but overall it was a really good movie. I have spoken to a few missionaries about the movie and tbh they think it's wrong that they have done this movie as they think it's disrespectful, which I disagree with them as the movie isn't just looking at mormons but all religions
@dawnh157Ай бұрын
@LockeDemosthenes2 I completely agree with you. Missionaries would never openly talk about porn, especially when they are looking for new people to talk to and convert. They also got a few things wrong as well as this.

I wouldn’t say this is like Dan Brown at all. He used fantastical conspiracy elements to create page turners. This is written much more smartly. This is much more of a think piece with horror elements and while I am still a person of faith, this didn’t insult me; it has multiple layers one can analyze. I was never scared, I just always wanted to see what happened next.

Third time was the charm and was able to see this movie. I thought it was fantastic. I did get in trouble halfway through because i made a I disagree comment and said what it actually was, which turned out to be the whole plot point. Plus, I watched Games that built America on Netflix, so that stuff wasn't new either. 😂😂 But even with the the thoughts and ideas that were raosed here were nothing new....the way they wrote this and directed this made it thought-provoking. The tense conversations made me squirm a bit, on edge to what was about to happen. This i thought was done better and was more psychologically thrilling than Longlegs by a mile.

As a non-practicing Mormon, I loved the movie, they got a few things wrong but it's worth a watch. I have spoken to a few missionaries about it and they find it very disrespectful, I tried explaining that they do not just talk about Mormons they talk about other religions too. I didn't tell them about the opening scene as they didn't need to know about that. Missionaries wouldn't talk about porn out in the open especially when they are out talking to people to try to get new members. I know they are sat on a bench talking but still, they wouldn't be doing that. There are other things they got wrong but its worth a watch.

Wikipedia put it best: Heretic is a psychological horror. You have a man who plays games with the young women, breaking them to the point where they have no choice but to do as he tells them despite it seeming he let them choose.
