The house is an analogy of the church. You enter to get out of the chaos of the world. Immediately upon entering, Minor but important details are shared once entered(metal in walls=troubling church history ie. polygamy, priesthood ban) put on their shelf. The further they go into the house (church), the more trapped they become and the more danger they are in. You can’t leave with your dignity through the front door but must go down (shame and shunning) to get out the back door. When you do get out you’re emotionally traumatized and wounded but see the light more brighter than before entering.

DON'T waste your money on this movie. I did my PhD in Film. My honest critique? Poor writing. Poor acting. One dimensional characters. No plot structure. A half sentence log line. Wanna-be screenwriter Bryan Woods has done three other films that were bad and boring but this fourth one is the worst. I find myself wondering how he and his Mormon wifie get funding for their garbage horror schlock/ celluloid catastrophes. Woods' chubby brainwashed Mormon wife Julia Glausi, must "know somebody"...or something. They simply are not talented enough to do anything of quality, and will never win an Oscar.

@@PhyreReighn ...The sissy producers of "The Heretic" are MORMONS. Your ideas about scripts on the criminals you mentioned would all show the church in a bad light as all these psychos had MORMON backgrounds. And Mormons like Glausi and Woods don't want to be excommunicated. And little Julia doesn't wanna make her Mormon mommy Carla and her Mormon daddy Wally mad at her. Plus they're starting to churn out spirit children and need to buy baby food. They are self-centered LDS creeps who would step on anyone to accomplish their ambitious money-money-money goals and serve Mormonism. I witnessed almost as much death and violence on my mission in Honduras in 2000-2002 as I did during my Afghanistan deployment in 2018. There was zero mental or physical support, I wasn't even allowed to call my family. As a brown-skinned American, I was sent by the mission president to the most precarious areas where it was unsafe for yt missionaries and even himself to go, borrowing language from the temple ceremony, I was told "Return and report" and like a dancing monkey, I happily obliged. I think of how everyone who tries to paint (follow) along with Bob, trying their best to mimic and recreate Bob’s art. 🎼 Do as I’m doing, come and follow me. 🎶 Also, it’s cookie cutter art simplified, literal, stroke by stroke line upon line, anyone can do it attitude. What a great way to get people to trust and invest time, relationships and money in tools etc makes it difficult to leave, sunk cost fallacy. Because you’ve invested so much you stick with it because you believe you have more to loss than gain if you quit.

Hi Ruth, Peter and Nemo and people in the comments, somehow I stumbled across your YT post. I’m a Philosophy BA, with agnostic beliefs, and always interested in hearing others’ perspectives through the lens of their beliefs. Your discussion was so interesting- it’s clear you’ve all thought a lot about the Mormon religion, and Ruth, it was fascinating to hear your take on how the (female) missionaries are conditioned to be polite and graceful regardless of the circumstance. It seems really similar to my experience of being a girl / woman, and something I’m really challenged by in raising my daughter now. To the people in the comments, I’m kind of horrified by some of the experiences you’ve been subjected to! I had no idea the life of a Mormon missionary could be so threatening in this time in history. Greatest respect for the good you are trying to do. ❤

The assessment that most religions are lacking in genuine caring and common sense I agree with, but my view is that that doesn’t warrant not believing in God. I think a lot of religions simply misrepresent him, including Mormonism, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t exist. God is essentially love and wisdom united. Many religions focus on the faith part or “faith alone” and miss the practical and common sense aspect of love being what should be at the heart of faith.

I love this discussion and this is an excellent movie to show the dangers that all missionaries, but especially sister missionaries face. How many have experienced violence or abuse on their mission? More than we know. I have to push back on Peter’s comment about how prepared and educated these two young women are on their faith and doctrines because they are Mormon and go to seminary and what other religion has that much preparation for young people. I do have to say as an ex-Catholic who was taught mainly by nuns in Catholic schools for 12+ years of my life. Religion class was a part of our curriculum, we said prayers and discussed God and faith in most of our classes outside of our formal religion class, and had weekly school Mass in addition to Sunday mass. And for some of us, daily Mass. So I think you can definitely experience more hours of indoctrination/faith preparation if you are in a religious school all day long.

This movie is a reminder of why everyone needs tactical training. It is important to develop skills that promote vigilance and situational awareness! If you are not trained to recognize indicators of potential violence, you will have a problem establishing healthy boundaries. Healthy boundaries, are like strong fences, they both help create good neighbors. Problem is you must develop skills that allow to enforce boundaries. You cannot establish boundaries you are physically capable of enforcing. We are socialized in the LDS Church, that it is acceptable for someone to have the right to insert themselves into our lives under the guise of “I represent the Lord’s Church and I am entitled to receive revelation for you because you are part of my stewardship, and you need approval and validation from me to be a member in full fellowship!

They were reported missing. The police searched the house and found a missionary badge with a bullet hole. He got arrested and sent to prison for murder. Due to lack of evidence he was released from prison. A few years later he moved to the UK in a small town in North Lincolnshire. A DNA test was done on the Missionaries items. He was sentenced to death for murder in absentia. The US wanted to extradite Kleason but the UK Government refused because of the death penalty. Kleason died of a heart failure in prison while awaiting extradition.

On a mission in the DC area we saw an area on the map where no trackting had been done. We went there and found only a few foundation houses behind which disappeared into dense growth and mobile homes. Everyone we saw was African American. We stopped at those first few houses and at the last house before the mobile homes began about 50 yards beyond. We were speaking to an African American lady about Christ and noticed a crowd of people gathering 50 yards away and waving clubs and picking up rocks. The lady said we had better leave it wasn't safe foe us. We turned and walked toward the front gate like area and the group started throwing rocks at us which did nor hit us. They began to walk after us waving clubs. As soon as we exited the gate and a fence hid us we ran to our car and sped out before anyone got to the gate. We stopped at a members house and told what happened where and her eyes went wide. She said the people there had announced to the area any white people entering the area would be killed and that a white couple had disappeared after last being seen in that area. This was 1982. Then African Americans have been forced to move for development so many times by people in ties. Land close to DC Capital Hill would be in high interest and open to exploitation.

History may be replete with killers who are husband and wife teams--and there have even been women acting alone--but both of those groups together are a tiny fraction of the number of killers that are men acting alone. The policy makes sense as something that's probablistically protective.

I served my mission a few years after 2 missionaries were murdered and chopped up by someone they went to visit.

Does this have spoilers? I haven't watched it yet and won't be watching it for over a week, so I'm avoiding all spoilers!! Please include "SPOILERS" in the title and description if there are spoilers! A24 has done a great job of not giving anything away, and this is very important to many of us lol. Thank you 🙏

Scott Beck and Bryan Woods were on Mormon Stories Podcast (episode#1962). Bryan is married to a Mormon (inactive Mormon I believe) but neither Bryan or Scott are, or ever were Mormon. The two female actors were raised Mormon, one a convert and the other born and raised.

It's not just missionaries who put themselves in danger. What about all this stay-at-home moms who find themselves in their 40s and 50s without any professional training? Being a member of the church is like being on drugs, you are so trusting that God will take care of everything that you don't think critically.

@marquitaarmstrong399 Yes. Your point? They were translated into other languages and nobody claims them to be something else, except Joseph Smith and Muhammad. To be fair, idk if Muhammad merely added the text to the Koran or blatantly plaigerized it. I'm told he did, but that is above my ability to analyze the Koran because I cannot read the original Koran. On the other hand, I am analyzing the BoM and most of the BoM is a string of phrases taken from the KJV. It's as if Joseph Smith flipped opened the bible and chose phrases randomly to "write" the BoM.

The quran was written 600AD. Muslims refer to the Bible as The Book and claim most of the prophets as their own.

Sounds like a movie worth watching! It's not often that we get films which stimulate pondering. I especially liked the last question of why people submit themselves to religious authority, and the reasons mentioned by Peter. But I do question his conclusion about democracy being the solution. Here in the U.S. we have fairly free and fair elections, but our latest election shows how millions are willing to submit themselves to an Orange Jesus who is one of the least virtuous and the least wise. And the LDS are among his strongest supporters. It's just an example of how "feeling" trumps "logic", pardon the pun. Few human beings are mature enough to expect their collective decisions to be purely logical or based upon their best interests. As Peter mentioned, we have done fairly well being united as a family. The larger the social units, the more complex and difficult becomes unity, and my feeling is that we need unity to accomplish anything at the social level. The Soviet Union is an example of a society which eliminated religion, promoted education and scientific advancement, and substituted a political party and ideology in place of religion. They didn't end up with the utopia they had expected. You mentioned that there are certain universal norms of good social behavior, like truthfulness, honesty, kindness, etc., which are found in all religions. Rather than seeing these universal norms as evidence that since no religion stands out as being better than the others, then they are all equally false, you can also make the opposite argument that they are all equally true. Mormons and most Christians have been programmed to think of their faith as the one true Faith, so it seems nonsensical to think of all religions as true, but each one can be seen as tailored to suit the social and spiritual needs of a particular era and culture, to fit the needs of a tribe, a city-state or a nation. It's the same principle as teachers in a school tailoring lessons to the developmental stages of the children. So Jesus, Moses, Buddha, Muhammed, Krishna, etc. can be seen as teachers of the same religion, but adapted to different developmental stages of humanity. You mentioned that all doors lead to death, but the real question is "What is death?" If your philosophy is materialism, then death is nothingness, and life has no meaning. But materialism in science is now being challenged by the realization that "matter" is fundamentally just another form of energy, and that the underlying reality of the universe is the quantum field from which emerges the atomic particles which constitute the material universe. Most people are now familiar with the near-death experience where people become clinically dead for a short period of time and are then resuscitated through medical intervention. During this period of bodily death, many people describe being vividly aware even though their brain is not functioning. A Dr. Jeffrey Long MD became curious after hearing many of these experiences from his patients and established an online collection of over 3,000 of these experiences. His website is NDERF.org for anyone curious about this scientific data which shows that "death" only applies to our physical bodies, not to our minds or souls, and this gives a positive way of seeing the two doors which both lead to death.
