Hey Peter. I also use it for vocals in a weird way. Mic to pre-amp then out to splitter then out to the 166 then into the DAW and then into plugin 160's with different compression ratio's applied to each channel with both the 166 and the 160 then I bring them back again into a single channel. But, if we are all scraping for few db here and there uniquely and tactilely this is a great box for the price to add to a trove of other compressor workhorses. The more I watch this gentlemen the more I realize he's somewhat of a genius in his own right. Great review and great insight and view to your approach. Consistently learn something from your channel. I'm a drum machine/vinyl sample type of producer at the moment. I'm adding hardware to my arsenal as I continue to learn to mix the right way. I have a few Neve eq's and preamps along with the 1176, Tube Tech CL1B and api 5500 hardware units. I have yet to come across a bus compressor that I can settle on. Had narrowed it down to the api 2500 and the smart research c2. The smart is a little too subtle for what I'm personally looking for outside of the crush feature. G Baxter not sure if Warren has done a video on this, but Colt Capperrune on KZbin did a good video on it. You’ll have to manually calculate and adjust it unfortunately, unless you have an Avid I/O. But colt explains it well.
@uptobatentertainment5 жыл бұрын
If you have UAD interface make sure you are in Pro Tools mode. This will setup your outputs -> inputs correctly so that when you go out to say a HW comp, you return on the same inputs like an Avid interface would. Ex: Out 5-6 to Bus Comp returns on In 5-6. This makes Pro Tools align the audio accordingly. I have printed the returns & zoomed all the way in to make sure and I haven’t had any phasing issues or comb filtering.

Can you please explain why there is a difference in sound between dynamics in and dynamics out?
@MirageLinne5 жыл бұрын
Dynamics IN means the compressor is engaged and compressing the signal. Dynamics OUT means that Warren has bypassed the compressor and it's has no influence on the sound in terms of compression. The unit still imparts a sound because it's running through the transformers in the signal path of the compressor. But OUT means no compression is applied.
@Bring_MeSunshine5 жыл бұрын
in this video, it was simply defining when the compressor was engaged or bypassed. All compressors are, by their very nature 'dynamics processors', so when his finger hit that button and it said dynamics in, then the compressor was engaged, when it said dynamics out, it was disengaged - removed from the signal chain; the same as 'bypassed'. The difference you hear when the compressor is engaged, is when that signal (be it drums, bass, or the whole mix) has been compressed; also called squashed, the peak levels are reduced, and along with it, the 'quieter' parts of the material comparatively raised in volume. The lower the threshold, the lower the level at which the compressor reacts, the higher the ratio, the more agressive the gain reduction, the attack & release times adjust how quickly the compression is applied and let go, the makeup gain is used to bring the compressed signal back up in volume and the blend, blends the compressed signal with the original to your taste
@Producelikeapro5 жыл бұрын
That's simply On or Off! Yes, it's more specifically said than just 'on or off', or more likely 'in or out'!
@patkelly39665 жыл бұрын

Awesome video, I was actually looking at the Successor the other day, it's definitely on my list... While we're on the subject of compression, quick question for you Warren: do you use master bus compression on a regular basis ? (I assumed so, since you're using your SSL when going hybrid) If so, at which stage of the mix do you insert it ? Do you often mix into the master bus compressor (using it as "glue") ? Thanks in advance !
@judsonsnell2 жыл бұрын
Bought it for a 2-Bus comp option but it wound up living on my drum bus full time. I might only be 30 minutes into mixing a drum kit before I've got it strapped on. On the 2-mix it's just a little too obvious and tuggy (my go-to is TC Master X out into a Tegeler VTC or the Stam SA-4000-MKII). On drums though, fantastic. The Successor goes from a handy peak-tamer to a charging bull. The detented pots are a godsend. Only complaint on the HA is that the two fast attack times are pretty much useless to my ears. Way too fast to be useful.

I reckon you should redo this vid, you are hanging around 50 micro second attack which is basically the fastest setting in an 1176, no one is ever really going to go that fast? Could someone explain the sidechain filter to me? At the beginning of the video it doesn't seem to be sidechaining in the way I understand it - using one track to control the compression of another - so why is the filter controlling the frequencies being compressed?
@ChristianCaldeira5 жыл бұрын
Giddy Aunt sidechaining in this situation refers to what the compressor’s threshold detector pays attention to. At 80 and 160, the detector doesn’t react (or reacts far less) to material below those frequencies. The 800 and 3k options create a bump at those frequencies so the compressor reacts to those frequencies more. The 5k option creates a high pass so the compressor doesn’t react (or again, reacts far less) to material under 5k, which allows you to use it as a makeshift de-esser. Cheers!
