At the gun shop I used to work at we sold the heritage RR revolvers to folks who wanted an inexpensive "knock a round" gun. A few were trappers who used them to dispatch animals they had trapped and we had a couple of folks that used them around the farm for pest control and the occasional bovine they had to put down. Most all of these revolvers were of the dual caliber (.22 LR/.22 Mag) variety in the 4-6 inch bbl lengths.

I love my rough rider. Last week I did some accuracy tests with mine and made it to 100 yards. I was also testing different 22lr accuracy with barrel length, so thats two videos in a row from Paul that line up with my recent projects.

I chronographed 40 gr 22LR vs Magnum in my Heritage 4 1/2. I didn't record numbers, but as I recall the difference didn't warrant the increased cost of the round. I haven't used my magnum cylinder since.

Same here...ya know the saying, "sometimes it's the things left unsaid that have the greatest impact" (or some permutation of that)? Well, Paul just seems to leave that part out and addresses everything. I am a tedious speaker myself, so I can appreciate a guy who can do it without becoming a total bore like I am. Also, I haven't gotten into the rough riders yet, but I've fired a ruger Wrangler, and it's pretty fun to shoot. Although I've heard they're not the greatest...but a good price for a plinkin gun isn't all bad.

I think the level of powder charge does make a difference. Also, there appears to be a timing effect from the bullet striking the forcing cone.

I really learned something today. I did not know the pressure loss at the cylinder made such a difference. The velocity loss with longer barrels was much more significant that the difference in rifle barrel lengths in the previous video. Good education for me today. Thanks Paul.

For the viewers who don’t fully appreciate Paul’s round counting ability: Jump to 14:28. Paul has a 25 round magazine, and proceeds to fire 24 rounds at the brisk rate of about 5.25 rounds per second(275 rpm), stopping precisely when the magazine empties, leaving the 25th round chambered. He then loads a new magazine, and resumes fire at the same expeditious pace, this time firing 25 rounds, leaving the 50th round in the chamber. He then has the audacity to say “for instructional purposes only”, reminding the viewer that he has kept perfect round count, and under other circumstances would not fire that final round until he had replenished the feed source (fresh mag). If that doesn’t blow your mind - I implore you: Try it. Most people can’t even count that fast, let alone multitask. Paul is an actual savant.

@@robaldridge6505 PA is awesome. Low taxes. Cost of living is cheap. I can own any guns I want with any size magazines. And no cc permit needed to buy pistols. Plus I've never waited more than 30 minutes to go home with a gun purchase. I'm on 50 acres so I have a range on my property I can shoot whenever. I built some nice atv trails in my woods and the deer hunting is great. My first year hunting last year I filled out all my tags. PA is sweet.

@@robaldridge6505 Compared to New York's gun laws, Pennsylvania is much more 2A friendly...it is kind of stupid in parts of pennsylvania, Philadelphia mainly and Allegheny County. But the overwhelming majority of Pennsylvania is Rural Trump loving Gun Country. A trip to the courthouse, filled out a form, got my picture taken, walked out 20 minutes later with my carry permit. Kind of sucks that 20 minutes away in WV you don't even need that but still way better than New York's ridiculous carry permit process

16inch barrel after the cylinder gap. That gap robs lots of power, with that loss of power it now has to fight more barrel to end up down range. Instead of a normal rifle where that power/pressure travels along the entire barrel and is able to help move the bullet faster.

I have a 1958 Ruger Single Six that I really love. It is quite accurate and refined, even at its age. I've shot Heritage revolvers. Yes, they are okay for what they are.

I have a Ruger Wrangler. Its vey nice for what it is, an alloy framed, .22lr, slightly downsized “Single Action Army”... definitely not as nice as a single six, trigger isnt as good but for the price its great and slightly nicer than the Heritage.

But then, the Single Six does have a rear sight.

On a whim, I decided to run standard deviations for each of the ammo series. For those interested: the 4.875" revolver had an SD of 17.2fps or 1.61% The 6.5" revolver had an SD of 19.2fps or 1.87% The 16" revolver had an SD of 41fps or 4.24% The 16" carbine had an SD of 15.8fps or 1.58% The 10/22 had an SD of 13.2fps or 1.05% A Standard Deviation (SD) is the mathematical average of each datapoint's deviation from the mean of those datapoints. It generally shows how precise or consistent a given set of datapoints are. In terms of firearms and ammunition, it's typically a measure of the quality of a given type/brand/batch of ammunition and how good their quality controls are. It can also be a measure of how consistent a given firearm is, if employed correctly. As we can see with the 16" revolver, an unusually-large SD in comparison to other firearms using the same ammunition, both those of similar and of different manufacture, can indicate some sort of flaw or defect that may cause an atypical inconsistency in velocity.

I want to agree with you, but with the budget lower grade ammo in .22 lr the ammo is so inconsistent. Now I happened to locate a 1988 Case of federal bulk pack 550s, Yes a case, 5500 rounds, It wasn't stored perfectly but not horrible either........... I had low expectations but I was soon disabused of that. It turned out to be fantastic and way above current production in consistency and reliability. I don't think there was a bad one in the 3.5k I shot of it and I stashed the last few boxes of it because of that. I have also discovered the new aguila super extra outperformed the CCI mini mags...... another surprise.

I have the Rough Rider with .22 and .22 with the 9" barrel and adjustable sights. I zeroed both at 20 yards. Both shoot to the same point of impact. Very fun firearm. Great video!

My younger cousin bought one of these awhile back and it shot about a foot left at 20 yards with all ammo. Definitely not shooter error. Some ammo were a little different but all very left. The front sight was not centered in the barrel and it also wasn't vertical. After literally bending the front sight with a pair of pliers, he got it close to zeroed. It also had a ton of gas blowing out the cylinder gap and some was coming back and hitting the shooter in the face. I know it's a cheap gun but that's pretty bad.

Generally, the barrel needs to be tightened a little. Also, the screw that secures the ejector tube is notorious for loosening, and needs thread locker. The thumb safety can break.

If that gap were completely closed the resulting friction would make getting the cylinder to turn extremely difficult. Also some allowance has to be made for the metal heating & expanding when shooting.

My daughter runs Remington 36 grain hollow points in her Rough Rider. She is becoming a fine shot with it. We went through, if I remember correctly, 6 brand/ weight/bullet type configurations before finding what works for her and her revolver. Thank you for the thorough and entertaining video.

I own the 6" barrel version. The space between cylinder and barrel is insane. ALSO the cylinder moves forward and backwards. You get what you pay for. (I never bought it, it was a gift) don't give cheap guns as gifts. Keep up the good work paul!

@@jd9119 Simple... Why would someone shell out a little more than $150 (prices vary) if they're unsure if it's worth even that much? I've seen old H&R .22 plinkers that were more dangerous to the shooter than the target, even in new condition. Better to gather as much information as possible before pulling the trigger on a plinker pistol. It may be cheaper than some other guns, but it's 2 weeks groceries for someone like me.

@@itatane yeah, we read a lot of reviews, watched a lot of videos comparing the guns before we spent some hard cash...eventually we bought the Heritage, and it has done okay...that one screw up front has to be constantly retightened these days (I'm ready to try the red loctite), but elsewise all good...the gun is beginning to look a little worn, doesn't bother us...the Wrangler has that lifetime warranty, but that might be the best feature...the Diamondbacks have a ton of features, but also a heftier pricetag...these are pretty cheap guns, we shouldn't expect them to age like a rarely fired Colt Python...we do know we couldn't justify spending 500-1000 for a single action .22, no matter how nice...i'm not a Rockefeller...

Try shooting the cylinder from the 4 7/8” in either of the longer barrel 22’s and you will probably see an increase in velocity. I have three Ruger 327’s and the short barreled one shot faster than the next size up. I tried shooting all three cylinders in all three frames and found that the cylinder was as much as a factor in velocity as was barrel length. I suspect that the chambers cut early in the production run were tighter than those cut later.

The gap probably varied slightly. Even with state of the art manufacturing capability you'll have a few thousandths difference here and there. And when it's a few thousandths more or less at the gap.. yikes.

As far as longer barrels being "more accurate" I believe that is usually attributable to the longer sight radius. It's easier to tell if your sight alignment is slightly off with a longer sight radius.

The rough rider and Ruger Wrangler are both good first time training guns.. and cheap ammo for plinking was good, especially during the summer of love, when ammo was sparse and expensive, for my defence guns

Comparing the Ruger and the Heritage, the price was almost the same where I was, but the trigger was way better on the Ruger. I also like I can get lots of grips for the Wrangler (It uses Single-Six grips) and can only get cheesy ugly grips for the heritage. The Ruger is better built and smoother overall.

@@GusFogle it’s an incomparably higher price for a gun whose only purpose is to be a fun little plinker. To each their own, but I’m not too picky with single action .22’s. When you get into concealed carry guns, home defense, and life and liberty guns, that’s when I start to not worry as much about price. But it’s a lot of fun for $100. I get it if you want to spend the extra $100 on a ruger wrangler, but I’m personally not gonna be trusting my life to this gun so I don’t see why I would spend that.

While I was all about the Wrangler and would have recommended it over a Heritage personal experience has show that the Wrangler has a serious issue. I've had 3 (the first one I bought and the second two were warranty replacements from Ruger) and all of them developed keyholing every round within the first hundred shots, with every type of ammo I tried. I don't know what caused it, and I don't know how wide spread it is but I can't see 3 guns having an identical problem as being coincidence.

@@seann2769 Maybe because it isn't made out of Zamak and I can load 6 rounds in it every time without the risk of AD'ing. I'm not crazy about buying guns with an expiration date. The Ruger also has a warranty that doesn't expire. I got one for $190 and it was worth the cost compared to something like a Bearcat.

I have the Heritage Roughrider in 4 7/8 with adjustable sights and a 22 wmr cylinder. It’s a fine shooting revolver with either cylinder. Another thorough and interesting video. I look forward to each one.

I have personally been injured by this firearm due to the cylinder gap. My best understanding on what happened was that for whatever reason, the cylinder must have not been completely aligned with the barrel. A significant amount of lead came out, along with some powder and due to my grip, sprayed my first finger and the web of my thumb. It took some time to dig all of the debris out of my hand.

What you describe does sound like the cylinder being somewhat out of time. Definitely possible. When the hammer is advanced to the third position, the cylinder will stop with the next firing chamber being slightly off, although the cylinder can be manually rotated to the correct position. By squeezing quite hard, the gun WILL fire from this third hammer position. It doesn't like being in this third position, and for normal usage, the hammer wants to be in the fourth position. Not an engineer or gunsmith, but this does seem to make it possible for a worn or damaged gun to fire from the fourth hammer position with the cylinder thus out of time. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I have a heritage 6 " that the wife got me for 109 bucks on black Friday a couple of years ago.. it shoots a little to the left.. I've read I can bend the front sight a little bit.. But I just aim a little to the right.. Works fer me

My understanding is that these Heritage revolvers have a 224 barrel so they can accommodate 22 mag bullets. The smaller 22 LR ammo may not have a good enough gas seal to make comparisons accurate.

I think the bullet diameters are the same between the two cartridges, so I'm not sure there would be 224 barrels, would there? I think the difference would be in the cylinders only. The 22 mag cylinder would have slightly larger chambers.

I've tried both cylinders messing around at shooting range and don't get me wrong,they both suck! I get way more accuracy with my lienad derringer with 22 LR insert. To be such a small derringer I just can't miss! Me and my hunting buddies had a ball with that little derringer

What a great illustration of pressure loss in a revolver: Something I've never considered when deciding which handgun to purchase. I still love my Rough Rider. I wonder how the Heritage compares to a higher quality pistol like a Colt or S&W?

When you consider the price difference, it compares quite well. But the Colt or S&W will go up in value while the Heritage will go down, so maybe not the best to invest in.

On the other hand, if you come offer me a grand for my 15-1 (1959 left-the-vault date) or 19-2 (serial says it left the vault between 1961 and 1962 - haven't gotten around to getting that one lettered yet, so can't be more precise), I'll be left with no option but to wave you down the road, since I'll be too busy rolling around laughing to be able to tell you to buzz off. :)

@@MrTruckerf I think it is a bit early in their life cycle to insist that the Heritage will go down in value in the future. They might not have the same brand recognition as Colt or S&W, but that may come with time and they do fill a niche often ignored by other manufacturers.

An interesting comparison of barrel length to velocity. Of the three Rough Riders I own (6.5", 4.75", and a 3.5" birdshead grip) the best shooter is the shorter 3.5". Interestingly enough, that is the shortest barrel length that I still can see the front sight after cataract surgery. A 2" revolver's front sight is invisible. And I no longer have any snubnose revolvers or compact autoloaders. Won't keep what I can't use.

I picked up the revolver for a little over $100 new. Fun range gun for my son and I. I totally agree with the single shot gun for a beginner, the thought of handing a 9yr old a 25 shot auto .22 on his first try made me apprehensive. He did great btw. We also have a Rossi pump action .22 which is fun as well.

Very informative. One of the things I have noted in expensive verses inexpensive revolvers is less attention to the cylinder gap and forcing cone. I would love to see a close up measurement of the cylinder gap. Is it under .006? Are both faces smooth (barrel and cylinder)? Is there a slick / smooth surface to the forcing cone? I have sometimes been surprised what I can achieve with a bit of polishing on a cheap firearm. Anyone?

I don't own a chronograph, but I own a Rough Rider Rancher, and a Taurus Circuit Judge in 22lr/22wmr, and one thing I can say is the Taurus has a GIANT forcing cone, and other chronograph demonstrations I've seen with the same rifle show a tremendous loss in velocity due to this. Ammo fired from the 22lr Circuit Judge get roughly the same velocity as a rimfire pistol would.

One caveat if I may add…even if you’re not shooting anything with potential for blowback I can say from experience that shooting a silenced. 22 at paper is not a good idea without eye-pro and I have the ophthalmology receipts to prove it. Heritage "Rough as Hell" Rider Revolver. The one cavate I can provide is to NEVER remove the screws from the frame. The frame is cast White-Metal. The frame screw holes will strip-out, I just installed 5 helical's into two different revolvers for this. I have since swore of this gun for repairs and cannot recommend it until Heritage starts using a better frame. For the same money, currently $189 you can purchase a Ruger Wrangler revolver. And though it's no Single-Six, the forged/milled aluminum frames are very well done. And the fit of all parts and finish in Cerakote is top shelf. You be the judge.

Lol, the screws tend to work themselves loose...my battle is the one upfront holding the ejector rod housing...red loctite is the next plan...yeah, the Ruger is engineered a bit better, the material a bit better, the warranty definitely better...the Heritage offers the .22wmr cylinder, 4 distinct clicks, the safety (omg!), and the cylinder isn't freewheeling, cheaper in price...we will never spend 500-1000 on an excellent (maybe) .22 single action revolver, just can't do it...our Heritage has several thousand rounds downrange now, perhaps we just bought a decent one...

@@PetuniaIii-pd1ww very good. though I would say to use Blue 242 Loctite not Red. The Blue can be removed if needed with regular hand tools. Red would require the application of heat to remove the screw. Good luck and have fun shooting.

I had to disassemble both of mine several times to replace broken parts. No issues with threads stripping though. I did have to replace a couple screws that backed out and were lost though.

I just brought home my Heritage 22 4.75” revolver and really appreciated this review. The price was definitely the main deciding factor and it is good to know it is a reasonable selection of firearm. My skills have definitely eroded since my time in the military (30 years ago) and wanted something that was more affordable to shoot (ammo prices) than my 9mm or my AR-15. This was cheap enough that I was able to pay for it and 1000 rounds of ammo than it would have been for 1000 rounds of 9mm.

I have 2 in the 6.5 in barrel. The one with 4.75 in barrel died after ~10K rounds. The fun to price ratio on these revolvers is super high.

What do you mean by 'died'? The frame broke? Most anything else could be fixed. My most-fired Heritage has 2650 rounds through it and no problems yet.

@@MrTruckerf The frame where the firing pin comes through. The pin was apparently just off center enough that it eventually wore a groove in the hole where the pin protrudes. Instead of being circular, the hole was oval. Caused mis-fires about 40% of the time. Heritage stated it was beyond repair when I returned it. Cheers!

@@submanusn3692 sounds to me like drilling it out and fitting a steel sleeve in it would have been a fairly easy fix, wouldn’t even need to go with steel it could be brass or copper to make friction fitting it easier.

I love the rough riders. The sights a bad usually, but after a bit of shooting you get to know your gun and you adapt and compensate to shoot tight groups. The only issue is that you gotta stick to one type of ammo or it shoots different, but that's all guns

Loctite is your friend...! the blue is preferred, but with the screw holding the ejector rod housing I am seriously thinking trying red loctite...it gets a little irksome constantly retightening that one screw...maybe duct tape, hmm...

That velocity loss from the flash gap is more than I expected, although, I've found the velocity from a 6.5 inch and 4.5/8 barrel tend to be the same on my single actions.

I'll put in a good word for the Heritage, 6.5" It's dependable, well built, reasonable accuracy. Mine has been used as my working around the place loaded 3 l.r. 3 crimped birdshot. First three birds hot. Absolutely deadly for the rattlesnakes. It's at the door for any walk outside. Best snake gun ever. Mine ain't for sale it a keeper.

I absolutely LOVE these revolvers. They're cheap, reliable and a whole ton of fun. They're also (in my opinion) the best first gun for anyone to own. Basically zero recoil, cheap to shoot and really hammers in the idea that every shot matters and accuracy is king with only 6 shots and an extremely long reloading time

Looks pretty obvious there's quite a substantial amount of pressure loss between the cylinder and the barrel, I but I assume it would also be different from firearm to firearm depending on the quality of machining and how much of a gap there is between the cylinder and the barrel. The 10/22 does use a little of the pressure to cycle, so I would like to see a comparison between the Heritage, 10/22 and a bolt action 22LR to see how much is actually lost in each process.
