Katie Rae I am not sure what you are you talking about? I might be disabled but not dumb or unable to be responsible for the money I earn “at work”. Not at all tax payer paid! However those who are disabled and tax payer supported by Social Security/Disability are not all “weak people” that you see all too much. It seems you have a poor grasp of the disabled community as a whole. Just because a person is unable to walk, does not give them a life sentence of being subpar mentally. I enjoy this channel because I cannot travel much due to my physical condition and am grateful to be able to still be able to see the interesting parts of the USA.

I grew up in that area, and by my time it was abandoned. It was so cool to drive past there on my way to swim lessons. That place was like my dream princess castle. I never knew about the past or what was there, but I absolutely loved dreaming about what I would do there. I could actually see the tower from my grandma's house. I was absolutely devastated when I saw parts of it get demolished as I got older. That place called the upper room was so awesome to imagine being my castle. Just uhhh I love it❤

Thank you for posting this video, Jacob. I went to Heritage USA in the summer of 1987 when I was 11 years old. Heritage USA was a really cool place. The water park was brand new and awesome. It was sad to see the water park replaced with condos, but I am glad to see parts of Heritage USA have been repurposed. Main Street USA looks remarkably the same as it did in 1987.

I use to work there in it's prime. I got a job there when I was 17. I worked in the grounds maintenance department. I mowed grass all day. It was a pretty sweet job for a young man. I work there for 4 years. The Pyramid looking building was the Heritage USA Human Resources Building. That's where they did their hiring for staff members.

Wish we had known you were in town. We would have joined up with you on this one, and could have given you additional information. I knew the place well unfortunately; I worked there from '85-'87. When Main Street USA opened, the trolley served as a fast food eatery with hot dogs, hamburgers, pop corn, etc. The pyramid building was the PTL World Outeach Center; basically it housed the property's administrative, security, and telecommunications. It was purposely built well away from the themed area. Directly across from the Upper Room used to be the Big Barn Auditorium and PTL Studios where Jim And Tammy had their daily shows. Though you stated the property had been revitalized, in reality the majority of the original park's 2300 acres has been sold off, and as you noticed, redeveloped with housing. Thanks for sharing!

My dad and I drove through here when we first came to the Carolinas and had no idea what it was, but it was so creepy. It was like a ghost town but everything felt wrong. We ended up getting lost while in the car, and coming upon that giant tower, we both had this very strong feeling of unease. We both got really quiet and everything felt wrong. My dad said, "we need to get out of here now" because we both immediately knew there was something culty about the place but had no idea if it was still functioning. Managed to find our way out but i'll never forget the feeling of dread that filled my stomach...

Disney it was not, at least to a little kid that had been to Disney quite a few times & in a family that wasn't religious. Thing I remember most is the ceiling in the main street shopping area had projections to make it look like sky with moving clouds. I thought that was the coolest thing & that more malls needed that. Did happen to run into Tammy Faye in the 90s a few times in Kmart in a town to too far from there, not even kidding but never got the tee shirt. Yes she did wear more mascara than I ever thought was possible.

As I recall, that massive building was supposed to be time shares, and from what accountants looking into the PTL Club’s finances concluded, the rooms were oversold many, many times over. Sort of like the old Ripley’s Believe It or Not! bit about every person in China lining up into several columns and marching into the sea forever without end.

The time share system was exactly what they were doing. Sadly they did not keep track, over sold, doctored the books, and it brought down the house of cards. I attended the school there, and as a counselor had access to all over Heritage. Jimmy Swaggart is the one who turned them in, he reported the money issue and Bakker's involvement with Jessica Hahn. Falwell took over, but he wanted some of PTL's technology that Liberty did not have. People overlook the good done there. God does not share glory with man, for only God is worthy of worship and praise. People lost sight of the creator, and began to worship creation. Shalom.

A lot of money was lost in that facility, especially the vacant high rise, investors took a beating and I wonder how much the state of South Carolina was on the hook for.

The pyramid shaped building served as the GOLF CLUB which you did not mention the golf course. You did not mention the out door Stone theater where the CHRISTmas story was performed for a month each year. There was also a roller skating rink and a campgrounds which is currently operating. Also there was Kevin's House that is now used as a coffee shop (Long cabin)

Rev Jerry Falwell and his people kicked Kevin out of Kevin's House and years later vandals broke in and burned it down. Kevin passed away in 92 I believe. It's sad how things worked out, especially after all the ptl members donated all the money to build kevin a home there. All that poor little guy ever wanted in life was to live at Heritage USA.

The "cabins" mentioned at about the 11 minute mark, were the old "Lakeside Chalets". The area on the map circled in red weren't actually these same "Cabins". The cabins, as seen on the same map, are those tiny structures immediately behind the bus seen on the map (located right outside the Heritage Grand Hotel).

The Heritage USA train that encircled the lake did, in fact, run along that gravel section as seen at the 7:05 mark. The gravel was the original train bed. Technically, was has always been referred to as the "island", where the water park once stood, wasn't really an "island" at all. It was technically a peninsula, surrounded on three sides by water. The original Heritage USA 'island" was never completely surrounded by water. And the train, did, in fact, run along that wooden structure that slices through the water at an angle. The train made counter-clockwise passes around the lake.

I saw another explorer tour this campus a number of years ago. It was prior to the Condos, but the lots were set up for them. But he found a still-operational TV studio. The video is from WRR19.

The atrium of the hotel, at the 2:48 point, is full of boring round tables and chairs. In the 80's, this area was full of high-end regal-looking antique-inspired fine seating. There were marble-topped tables and nice looking lamps. There was even a stately grand piano, and, in the far corner of the lobby, (to the far left corner, at the 2:48 mark) a small indoor swimming pool.

Great video Carpetbagger, thanks for creating and sharing it. In my time in the Charlotte area I used to frequent Heritage USA as I found nature taking it back interesting. The pyramid structure you talked about was the HQ for the site. Interestingly the water park and mountain were removed and were deposited to form the new main road into Pineville, NC near where the arcade Castle and go cart track use to be. I have a few pictoral videos on my channel showing some of the buildings and changes from 2004-2007.

Jacob, really enjoyed your video! I loved watching The PTL Club and loved Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker! I had their $100 book but, sold it in one of my yard sales for $5. I should've never sold it. I watched them on a big satellite dish my Daddy bought from his brother Albert. Really enjoyed your video!

I never got to go to Heritage USA as a theme park but when I was little they had Christmas light display ( Like Tanglewood) that you can drive through. My parents took me and my brother to see the Christmas lights one year,. Sad that is was abandoned. Carowinds could use a Rival to keep things interesting. By the way- My Husband and I took our kids to The Grievous Gallery in Salisbury because we saw your video on it and they had a amazing time. Thanks for doing what you do- If you didn't go to these places we wouldn't have known it was there.

This is amazing; I've never known about this for my 21 years of living in the Carolinas; it actually baffles me that most of the stuff down here is kept, even the Chuck E Cheese in Wilmington NC still has the animatronics, but it was made to be bigger; I visited it with my sister 2 years ago, it still has its Jr. Munch I believe and it's the only one to still have Pizza Cam with its latex mask.

I seem to recall that the unfinished hotel tower was an effort to make good on the large number of lifetime memberships sold, each with promise of an annual stay. I know that we went there at least once when I was a kid but I don't remember much. I think it was there that they moved to a new studio and did it in the middle of a show, having the audience walk to the new one - we happened to be there the day of that. My parents would, around that same time, totally buy into what Mike Warnke's stories in the Satanic Panic so make of it all what you will.

The original exterior of the Main Street USA section back in the '80's looked very much like the interior section seen at the 3:23 mark. There were three floors to this section: the first housed a variety of shops. The second and third levels housed partner rooms, which were essentially high-end hotel rooms that the PTL partners stayed in during visits.
