I always find Prey extremely inspiring, sincere and spontaneous in his delivery of everything he sings. He had those qualities in abundant quantities as few singers I have seen did. His voice is extremely beautiful, the timbre rich and lyrical, but what I find most amazing is his ability to use his vocal resources and ally them perfectly to sing the melody in the most expressive but unpretentious way.

One of Mahler's best songs performed by one of the greatest ever to sing it.

That´s wonderful. (And I think it is understandable, since he himself is like a pure and happy child in the best possible meaning!)

Given that the German language is not as musical or poetic as those with Latin at its roots and tends to have a vocabulary that is so guttural and even coarse, it is miraculous to hear a singer like this who can capture deep and tender human emotion. I was taken by surprise.

The conductor Vaclav Neuman from Czechoslovakia was told to be one of the best cognoscentes on Mahler. But having listened to records with his interpretation of Mahler's symphonies as a first time of meeting Mahler he dissuaded me from Mahler, really. I even thought he (G.M.) was a mess combined with boredom (I was very young)! It had to be Leonard Bernstein later whose interpretation opened Mahler's music for me. Forever. Here Vaclav Neuman does very well but the overal good impression from this concert is very much due to qualities of Herr Hermann Prey's. To whom the orchestra makes a quite good accompaniment,-).

Hermann Prey schmalzt furchtbar.
@gerdawendl38427 жыл бұрын
