Es war ein König in Thule, Gar treu bis an das Grab, Dem sterbend seine Buhle einen goldnen Becher gab. Es ging ihm nichts darüber, Er leert' ihn jeden Schmaus; Die Augen gingen ihm über, So oft er trank daraus. Und als er kam zu sterben, Zählt' er seine Städt' im Reich, Gönnt' alles seinen Erben, Den Becher nicht zugleich. Er saß beim Königsmahle, Die Ritter um ihn her, Auf hohem Vätersaale, Dort auf dem Schloß am Meer. Dort stand der alte Zecher, Trank letzte Lebensglut, Und warf den heiligen Becher Hinunter in die Flut. Er sah ihn stürzen, trinken Und sinken tief ins Meer, die Augen täten ihm sinken, Trank nie einen Tropfen mehr There was a king in Thule, Was faithful till the grave, To whom his mistress, dying, A golden goblet gave. Nought was to him more precious; He drained it at every bout; His eyes with tears ran over, As oft as he drank thereout. He sat at the royal banquet With his knights of high degree, In the lofty hall of his fathers In the castle by the sea. There stood the old carouser, And drank the last life-glow; And hurled the hallowed goblet Into the tide below. Début 1816;Schubert a 19 ans depuis très peu./ Je garde le rythme syllabique DU LIED,pour que les personnes francophones ne connaissant pas l'allemand puissent suivre le sens en écoutant l'interprète. LE ROI DE THULÉ. ▪︎C'était un Roi de Thulé, fidèle jusqu'au trépas, à qui son aimée mourante offrit une coup'(e) en or. ▪︎Rien ne lui devint plus cher pas un banquet sans elle, et les larmes lui venaient chaque fois qu'il y buvait. ▪︎Dès qu'il sut sa fin proche, légua tous ses fiefs royaux, distribua tous ses biens , sauf sa si chère coupe, ▪︎et à un royal banquet ses chevaliers il convia, dans la salle ancestrale du château au bord des flots. ▪︎[Là,il festoya et but, et, presqu'à son dernier souffle]¹, lança sa précieuse coupe dans l'abîme, vers la mer ; ▪︎la regarda tournoyer, et sombrer sous les vagues; alors ses yeux s'éteignirent; [plus un'(e) goutt' il ne boirait]² ------------------ [....]¹là,je prends un peu de liberté par rapport à la traduction littérale,mais reste tout-à-fait dans le sens de la ballade. [....]² remarquer le ton un peu facétieux (de "trank nie einen Tropfen mehr") avec lequel Goethe allège la fin :façon de dire "ce n'est qu'une ballade". ------------------- Marguerite vient, pour la 1ère fois, d'être abordée par Faust, qu'elle a éconduit sans façons: " je ne suis ni noble ni belle et sais très bien rentrer chez moi sans aide"(!).Revenue dans sa chambre et se préparant pour la nuit,elle fredonne cette ballade à caractère médiéval.Sans doute avec plus d'insouciance-à ce stade du drame !-qu'ici Hermann Prey, qui rend à merveille , superbement,l'ambiance féodale voulue par Goethe.
