The Hermes 3000 is a joy to work on...sometimes 😅. A lot of the service work on these is very straight forward and easy to access.

We didn't know about it. Thank you very much, mr. Joe.

I have two Hermes 3000s and one Hermes Ambassador. Love all of them. Bourhg two via ebay and one via craigslist. One of my Hermes has a Spanish keyboard, but that didn't stop me from using it for English. The other has an American style keyboard and the techno font, which I really like. No complaints, really. The Ambassador is a monster machine, but I need to be careful and deliberate when I type with it otherwise it will occasionally skip. I took it to a typewriter repairman to have that problem fixed, but I'm not sure he actually did any repair. Lesson learned.

Very helpful video! I’ve been trying to solve this issue since I recently procured a Hermes Media 3. It has seen a hard life with past owners abusing the hell out of it, but now with this fix and some others it works great. Thanks Joe.

I have the same model as you show on this video. Bought locally for a reasonable price because it wasn't working well. I was able to fix and adjust it to type without problems. Last fall, I was gifted a late model made in Yougoslavia that was damaged from shipping. It was damaged because the segment was not locked for transport as instructed in the owner's manual and the ball bearings were knocked out of the segment shifting rails. These two red tabs hidden by the carriage that we see on your video are not often discussed but they should be moved forward and screwed down when shipping the machine. Daniel

Great video! I will not confess how many Hermes 3000 typewriters I have. Let me just say, they find me. I have done a few servicing projects and I agree, they are easy to work on. TFS, very helpful!

Great video Joe, thank you....I love repair videos. Don't have a 3000 yet, but I will !

Hello Joe, and thank you for all of your great content. I fixed the same issue on an Olympia SF by removing the return silencer spring, cleaning it and the star wheel and by bending the circular part of the spring a bit with my fingers (for better grip with the star wheel).Hope this tip helps you and other people

Thanks Joe. I picked up a Pharmacists old Hermes 3000 from his son yesterday. It has the Rx key and everything. Kind of neat. Anyway, it was making this exact grinding sound and it was driving me nuts. Now, thanks to you from 7 months ago, 🙂, it's sounding great.

Very helpful! My ratcheting sound turned out to be the spacebar dog(?) drooping a little into the star gear. But these video was a great walkthrough for similar access.

Thanks for the tip about the carriage quick release! That’s gonna save me a lot of headaches. Mine’s a ‘65, one of the last of the curvy models

Party pooper here. Personally have owned 1st and 2nd types and have enjoyed them for my money. Hermes 3000s are good, as many good typewriters, but not worth $1000s.

Thanks a lot for this very helpful video. I just got my second 3000b and took the carriage & cover off to clean it up. It's a fine machine with some material flaws (these plastic knobs are really crappy compared to the ones in the 3000a model, fortunately there are now heavy duty 3d printed replacement knobs... and why did they need to make the side panes of plastic?!… and on the other hand the ribbon cover thick like a fifties truck's fender :D) and, in my humble opinion a construction flaw with the way only the 4 bottom cover screws keep the machine together, whereas the 3000a model had those steel plates at the bottom to fix the chassis to the top cover first, which made the construction way more solid and easier to disassemble.

Is this disassembly procedure the same for the Curvey model? Thanks, 👍

The carriage comes off the same way on all Hermes 3K models. The outer shell is different though, the plastic model clips off, the metal one has some screws. They are at the front behind the number keys, and the feet have to come off too, from memory.
@Joe_VanCleave9 ай бұрын
Yes, essentially the same. Remove carriage, remove four bolts on feet underneath, remove two screws behind the “3” and “0” keys.

@@Joe_VanCleave thank you my friend, hopefully one day I'll be able to enjoy a beautiful machine like that. If I could pick it would be the curvy one, in full Minty seafoam goodness lol, it just looks so good and sounds amazing. If it's meant to be and the typewriter Gods allow lol, I'll own my own Emerald Empress one day, or name it Ariel based on seafoam, hint little Mermaid, I like naming typewriters with a play on their make model or something. Course I'm finding they have their own personalities and the talk to you. Thanks again my friend.

Thanks Joe. I have this problem and it takes the fear away for me to fix it myself. My quiet-riter has the same issue. Do you know if it is from the same origin?

The escapement return silencer works similarly in different machines, but the details of the parts are different.
@AtelierDBurgoyne9 ай бұрын
I have s Remington Model 5 and will look for the silencer.
@saulysw9 ай бұрын
Four Hermes 3000? Does that mean you have 12,000 Hermes? Wow! Not all machines HAVE a silencer, do they? Notably the Smith Corona 5 series...right?
@Joe_VanCleave9 ай бұрын
Hermes 12k! The 5-series do have a silencer of sorts but it uses a tiny rubber pad, that often gets hard or disintegrates due to age.
