I was getting all ready to take the carriage off, and decided to hit the return spring with solvent like you suggested, and it worked! That's a great tip, a lot of things on a typewriter can be fixed with cleaning but I never thought this would be one of them.

Great series! Question: could spraying degreaser into the spring groove help increasing the spring friction without disassembling?

I try to only do operational checks when the machine is fully cleaned and lubed this is the only way to tell if it's having issues. If your cleaner of choice is degreaser that works.

You mentioned that you had a video on removing the carriage on the SM machines, but I couldn't find it. I did find one you did on the SM9 though. Do they disassemble the same way?

Another excellent video... tell me, does these machines works normally withou the silent spring I mean it's only a metter of irritating noise ? Thxs

The SM3 do work without the spring. It will be suboptimal, loud, and not smooth. Other machines won't work correctly without it. The Olympia SF needs its silent return spring set correctly for the machine to work right.

Very clear and informative! (typo though - applies to SM3 too) (:

Park the drawstring, nix one stop, deal with a fiddly bit, and then pick up a set of captive bearings... Man, it can't get simpler than that! (Also, a silent return on American typewriters would have spoiled everything for Leroy Anderson, so thank Heaven that it did not happen! 🤣)
