@@naminaoberhausen2131 likely because he isnt the most worshipped of the gods, and so theres just less information out there. its easier to write a book abt a god who has like a hundred temples and epithets and things, but its much harder when you dont have as much historical material! plus, hermes isnt as big of an influence in things like the odyssey or the illiad, so hes less researched!

That makes sense. It just seems wierd that all of that would be the case when he is assumably one of the most important figures, right? Is it because he was supposed to be kind of operating in the background, kind of like a representation of higher mystery not understood by the uninitiated or something like that?

Based on His role and His prevalence in Greek religion, I'd argue that it's not that Hermes wasn't worshipped but that His worship was far more personal. Hermes had a shrine on every street corner and was worshipped in every home from what we can tell. You don't really need too many temples for a deity like that. Plus it's far more in His nature to not have major worship destinations since He is very much a God that governs transitions. You're more likely to find Hermes on the way to somewhere rather than at someplace. This of course also lends a possible explanation as to why we don't have a lot on Hermes. Why write about someone everyone already knows? So that's what I'd argue. He's a popular and beloved deity but one that doesn't hog the spotlight

Hermes is referred to in both the Orphic and Homeric Hymns with the epithet the Korykian. This could simply be an allusion to the Korykian Cave above Delphi. A location reminiscent of the cave where Maia dwelled in the Homeric Hymn. But this is what Chat GPT4 had to say on the matter when asked Why is Hermes referred to as the korykian? Here is the reply: In Greek mythology, Hermes is associated with various epithets or titles that highlight different aspects of his character or spheres of influence. One of these epithets is "Korykian" or "Korykeus," which refers to a specific cult of Hermes that was centered around Mount Korykos in southern Anatolia (modern-day Turkey). According to the myth, Hermes was born in a cave on Mount Cyllene in Arcadia, Greece, and as a god of boundaries, transitions, and commerce, he was often associated with caves, crossroads, and other liminal spaces. The cult of Hermes Korykian was particularly focused on the underworld aspects of Hermes and his connection to caves and caverns. Mount Korykos, where the cult of Hermes Korykian was based, was also known for its many caves and underground streams, which were believed to be portals to the underworld. The cult of Hermes Korykian likely developed as a way for local communities to propitiate the god of the underworld and ensure safe passage for their dead to the afterlife. In some versions of the myth, Hermes is said to have defeated the giant Korykios, who was terrorizing the region around Mount Korykos, and established his cult in the area. As a result, he became known as Korykian, after the mountain and its associated cult. Followed up by the question, where is Mount Korykos? To which the wondrous mechanical turk replied: Mount Korykos, also known as Kızıldağ, is a mountain located in southern Turkey, in the province of Mersin. It is part of the Taurus Mountains and rises to a height of 1,709 meters (5,607 feet) above sea level. The mountain is situated near the Mediterranean coast, and its slopes are covered with forests and dotted with caves and ancient ruins. The region around Mount Korykos has a rich history and is believed to have been inhabited since prehistoric times. Today, it is a popular destination for hikers, nature lovers, and history enthusiasts. This is all to propound nothing, but rather to ask, how far back does this story go? Does the Greek Hermes have a Scythian analog? Does the god go back before recorded history given this site is so close the earliest monolithic structures? And last and most bold of all, was there a historical Hermes? Or more precisely was there a man from before our recorded histories from which the mythic archetype has its origins? My deepest gratitude to anyone who has taken some of their time on this Earth to read my words. Cynic, troll, novice, and scholar be free and welcome to comment however you wish.

one question that has bothered me for years: it has always been obvious to me that Hermes, and not just him but most of the Gods, have prophetic skills (something you would expect). When we come to the episode of the golden apple given by Paris to Aphrodite on Hermes' suggestion, i wonder: did Hermes not know what that would cause? Did he not predict the war that would have followed? Was the war wanted by the Gods?
@FortressofLugh

it would appear so.
@blacksnowflake8574
@blacksnowflake8574 3 жыл бұрын
@@FortressofLugh yet i somehow doubt that. There seem to be no malice in the gesture that Hermes does, rather he sees himself in Paris as a man crazily wanting this woman just like him was feeling towards Aphrodite who was still resisting him. In that I see his "human side", the maybe innocent cunning into flattering the woman he wants. Another thing about the connection between Hermes and Athena. Let's not forget that Aphrodite was not only a goddess of love, she was a warrior goddess too identified with Astarte and Ishtar. Something the Greeks don't often refer to. However, Hermes and Aphrodite do end up together generating the mysterious "Hermaphrodite" which rather than being a son, it seems more plausible to me that they ended up "joined" "bounded" together as one. If that is plausible, it is also plausible that Aphrodite would have taken other connotations making her similar (or equal) to Athena. Let's not forget both Ishtar and Athena had an owl as emblem. Would love to know your thoughts. I study and research mythology for 30 years! Sorry, I forgot to add.. think about the figure of Shiva/Shakti as Ardanarishvara as male/female, union between Shiva and Parvati- see also my commment below between Athena and Maat

The amount of correlation between myths is staggering because you will learn all myth was the mystery schools veiling their knowledge for the profane that could only be truly understood by the initiated. At least this is what I gather from reading Manly P Halls work. It gets real interesting when you learn that Saturn could of been our main sun at one point in history (the golden age) and all the countless deities are just another name for saturn and how all ritual period originated as an attempt to bring back the golden age under saturns rule.

The story about Hermes coming to scare the child with a storm has huge undertones of ancient tribal initiation practices and Hermes role as Initiator, or guide
@jojolafrite90
@jojolafrite90 Жыл бұрын
True also for the Storm god Yaweh that became the divinity of Israelites (who were a tribal, a social group, not an ethnic one, like 1400 BC, and more like bandits and pillards and plunderers) and other Abrahamic subsequent religions, it also all ties up to Akhenaten, indeed, it's more and more believed. The one god of now was before one of many gods, and is mostly a fusion of old gods, making a storm and war god. I also think the "Hermes Trismagistus" stuff has some actual bases, but I'm not smart or cultured enough to see, it, yet at least. And that the character of Apollonius of Tiana is tied up to the creation of the myth of Jesus (which may or may not have been an actual historic figure of some sort).

Almost every Christian myth is adopted from the older faiths which they categorized broadly as Pagan. The Virgin birth adopted from the stories of divine gods and goddesses born of virgin mothers impregnated miraculously by divine fathers. The epithet Mother of God belonged to Isis or Auset, the Egyptian goddess who conceived her son Horus miraculously after the death of her spouse Osiris. She was the original Neter Mut or the Mother of God. Many of the heroes of ancient religions similarly die and are resurrected. Osiris himself is an example. He rises from the dead but his generative organ can't be found and so he becomes the king of the dead and presides over the Hall of Justice in the Egyptian world of the dead. Most interesting is how black Madonnas are associated with natural phenomena like springs, waters, forests and trees like the Pagan nymphs, dryads and the sylvan goddesses. At Paliani Madonna resides in a Myrtle tree and prefers the tree to a shrine and is known as Panagia Myrtidiotissa. Newer religions are mostly recycled pagans customs and beliefs.

I Loved this video, but Are you sure Hermes isnt Loki? And that Odin isn't like the one eyed characters if all of the other mythologies? Usually the one eyed guys are "bad guys", and Odin is a "good guy" but it depends who is telling the story. Also Kids share qualities with their parents whether they are adopted or not. Both Loki and Hermes have a "wolf" kid too, or a kid named after one. You're the expert but that part doesnt make sense to me. I honestly just think its because family members act alike. Loki is also called the doer of good and the doer of evil, and Hermes does both too. Hermes acts like the go between, and so does Loki, only Loki is usually doing what he does to cause a problem or to fix one. Plus both of them are the odd ball. Loki is adopted and part frost giant but hes not giant at all, and he doesnt fit in with the frost giants any more than his adopted family. Hermes is like that too he's the most human acting greek god, but doesnt fit in with them any more than the humans. Idk, you might be right, but I just honestly think he has way more in common with Loki than Odin. Also you cant base it on clothes, especially when Hermes shares his trinkets with like everyone. Like who lets people wear their shoes? Just hermes. Thats how you get toe fungus.

Wonderful presentation, your best yet, in my estimation. You brought up a thought that had not occurred to me when I studied Classics at university: "It might be that Argos was in origin a cyclops" (Time mark 50:35) It occurred to me as you said this that there might be an explanation for "cyclopean walls" used by classical Greeks and before to describe the huge walled cities such as Tiryns & the wall at the Isthmus of Corinth. What I'm getting at is all these old and impossibly magnificent cities may have derived their mythical origins from individuals who were, by human standards, impossibly strong, i.e cyclops. Argos may just have 'identified' one of them. I suspect there were several more whose 'lineage' has been lost to time and revisionist mythologizers from classical and pre-classical times.

very detailed, some interesting interpretations as well, one thing to keep in mind though, Mercury rules the sign of Gemini, and this explains quite a few things in myths, if you know astrological symbolism... As for the weirdness about Hermes as the surpreme god like Zeus, and compared to Odin and Lugh, Hermes in Hermeticism is the Logos, the Word of the cosmic mind (Zeus/Amun) and as you said at the end like Christ, explicitly according to some Gnostics. Also, I want a strawberry tree.

@Lu11abi
@Lu11abi 3 жыл бұрын
I think the Hermes/Odin correlation is hasty...Odin IS the Cosmic Mind, and He gives the Word to mankind through inspiration, maybe like Zeus gives His son, Hermes... Also, an Olympian-Norse pantheon pairing with Odin would require Dionysus be added to the pile, or it doesn't really know Odin (ahem, Tacitus)... I need more time in the Gaelic sagas to see where Lugh fits in, but I don't think it's 1:1 here either...
@gunkwretch3697
@gunkwretch3697 3 жыл бұрын
@@Lu11abi there are certainly differences, but Odin is the god of poets, and as with the runes, this is kinda like the Logos, and I can see your point about him also being the cosmic mind, but we might also say in a way that Ymir is that, or like Purusha in Hinduism... Hermes was not really the supreme god or Nous for the Greeks... but there are texts, such as Solomon and Saturn (though Christian and not primary) which explicitly call Odin Mercurius

@@matildamarmaduke1096 Hermes created the Strawberry tree in myth, though there is actually a tree named that, aka Arbutus 'Marina. which is not really strawberries, still good little fruits (though I have never tried them)... PIE Pe - to Shepard. Vedic Pusan. English words Pa-sture. Polish - Pasać/ Paść. Feed = Pasza/Karma. To guard = Pilnować. Hermes who milks clouds. To milk in polish is doić. To give water to person, animal is poić, to drink pić (like in sympoysium, common drinking). Hermines were piles of rocks. Hermes columns, rods, statues. Rod, pole, pillar in polish is słup, pal, bal, drąg, kij(sounds like key), tyczka (from tykać - touching), pika, English has word spike. Pan means a lord, a noble, a master, Pani means a lady. Panna means a virgin, panicz means a young master. It also brings to mind punisher, someone keeping order. Panować means to rule the same as władać, ład meaning order (close to lug really), ładny is in order but more something nice, beautiful, accepted. Slavic name Władimir comes from it. Hersa - morning dew here is poranna rosa, raźny means bright, razić is to hit, radiate, blind with light, rays of light. Rosnąć is to grow. Rain is deszcz but seems to be a simplification of a different word related with Rosa/rosić. Droscić? This brings to mind word troszczyć się, troska - to take care, a care, especially for parents caring for children. Even earlier polish Christian hymn Bogurodzica has very old words as spuścić - to let loose from hights allegorically meaning to give, provide by god/heavens. Puść means to let loose, from holding, give back freedom, set free. Puścić na łąkę would mean to let free on grassland. Spuścić ze smyczy also means to literally unleash. Dopuścić to let to happen. There is also a religious celebration called zapusty (other unrelated root word is pusty/pusta/puste means empty, maybe coming from state after letting something from hand making it empty). Pustynia is desert. Pustelnia is a Hermite house in forest or somewhere remote. Puszcza is a deep forest. But I may miss few related words. A stick with string to hit animal to go faster is bat and pejcz. But maybe both not originally polish.

Historians and Mythologists (pseudo historians) are wrong! Ancient Archaic Greek Argos was not in the Peloponnese but on the Ionian island of Kefalonia. It's modern name is the harbor city of ARGOStoli. Classical Greeks later adopted this name for their port city of Argolis (Argos) on the Peleponnese. Kefalonia itself was named after Kefalos, a son of Hermes. It is no coincidence that the small satellite island of Kefalonia is Ithaca. Both Odysseus and Jason of the ARGOnauts had a genealogy leading back to Hermes. Hermes' association with the WOLF is depicted in the form of a wolf on ancient coinage of Kefalonia. Surname variants of Lykos ( meaning Wolf in Greek) belong to many descendants of Kefalonia.

Another version of the life of Hermes says he was actually born as an elite or highborn citizen of the Empire known as Atlantis. The 2nd or 3rd son of its founder, The mighty God of the Seas - Posideon. Who, in this version of events, is actually the Annunaki "diety" also known as Enki. Posideon is just one of many many other names ascribed to him by various ancient cultures. He was groomed to be one of the keepers or guardians of the sacred knowledge. He learned to push past the Known limits of consciousness. Going beyond the furthest ever attained up till that point. He had achieved transcendence from physical death. Having evolved himself and his spirit to where he once again attained his celestial form, also known as The Light Body or Rainbow Light Body (in certain sects of Buddhism), the diamond body (in taoism), The Resurrection Body (in Christianity), His Merkaba (in Jewish mysticism) , etc etc. In other words he was no longer made of flesh, rather he was now an immortal being made of celestial light to which he could manifest himself in any form and on any plain of existence he so choose. He could manifest in his old flesh based form so exactly that nobody could possibly tell it apart from his actual physical body.. only to completely Vanish from existence in the blink of an eye. He never aged and was resistant from disease while in this dimension. When he learned of tbe catastrophe that would destroy his home and people, he chose several people and entrusted them with going in every direction where primitive cultures existed and to settle there and guide them. Share their knowledge and technology with these people. Teach them about their true potential. He built monuments, great monuments with secrets of the universe and existence itself built in to them, and with these he created free energy for all. These power plants used the shape of the pyramid to force the energy up and out its top and Into the ionosphere, where it spun around like a generator building up power, and was then harnessed anywhere within the proximity of a Granite Obelisk. Where capacitors could be recharged for remotely powering lights and tools. Plus, the exposure to these frequencies seemed to offer additional health benefits as well as causing elevated states of consciousness. of course, this is just an alternative version of his life story. It's more accepted by certain gnostic and Hermetic sects, naturally.
