My grandmother (born in 1908) hung her towels and sheets on the line year round. It didn't matter if it was 30 C or -15 C. She used vinegar instead of fabric softener. I remember taking clothes off the line in -15 weather and her telling me to give them a good shake, crunchiness gone
@loisharry62212 жыл бұрын
Yes, white vinegar works well as a fabric softener because it’s rinses all leftover soaps out of fabric. Your colors will be brighter also. You will not smell vinegar. Just add a cup to the rinse cycle, or compartment where you put fabric softener.
@ljparks2 жыл бұрын
I think that built in clothesline in the shower has a knob that you can tighten once you pull out the line but before you hang the clothes! I have a similar one in my tiny apartment :) you have to loosen it before you put it away and do it every time but it means you can hand much more without it drooping. Total game changer!
@katbar60662 жыл бұрын
I have one similar- maybe a bit newer and yes it does have a "Tensioner" that you can tighten the lines with.

In Greece we have clothelines on our balconies in order for the clothes to dry with a little help from the sun!It is considered to be a healthier way to dry your clothes!!of course in winter we bring the clothes inside the house...but don't you have balconies at all?
@Merciaks2 жыл бұрын
@@elizabethbennet29 Unfortunately balconies are not as common in the UK, I've lived in a few flats here and 2 of them had balcony doors leading to nowhere - just a balustrade... so you'd have nowhere to hang clothes outside. It was such a pain trying to dry towels, bedding or denim indoors.

I have the same scenario and it does work, but you have to physically shake the “crunch” out depending on your water I guess. It’s not a major job just a little shake does the trick!
@denisemeredith24362 жыл бұрын
Hermione, towels get crunchy if you use fabric softener in your wash, I know it sounds mad but its true - its a tip I learnt when I worked for John Lewis. I also don't have a drier so I give my clothes an extra spin. Thanks for sharing your cleaning video, it has inspired me to do one room at a time.

Vinegar will soften your towels nicely. Add a few drops of essential oil in your favorite scent for an even more luxe towel-situation! Love the video. TFS!
@victoriaparnell73392 жыл бұрын
Hey Hermione! I grew up with only a clothesline. The white vinegar does help, but so does hydrogen peroxide. If you put a few drops of essential oil (I'm partial to bergamot) in with it, that helps. The smell of vinegar mostly dissipates by the time your towels are dry, even if you don't use the essential oil. Also, give them a good hard shake before you hang them. It might seem silly but it actually straightens the nap and makes the terry cloth loops stand up. Also, never use fabric softener if you can avoid it. It coats fabric in a sheen that temporarily makes items feel soft, but actually weakens them and shortens their lifespan. Thanks for all the work you put into videos! Love from Colorado 🌲🏞
@TheYgernependragon2 жыл бұрын
add one glass or one cup of white vinegar in the softener compartment of your washing machine.it replaces the chemical softeners. the vinegar loses its smell when diluted in the water. you can add it to any kind of garments even the more delicates and you ll be impressed with the results!

Hermione! The trick of making towels not crunchy after the wash is to add additional rinse cycle or add water to rinse! That's what really made a difference for me!! I dont have dryer, so adding an additional rinse cycle makes my clothes and towels so much softer! Try it!

I don't have a dryer either and read that you should shake them before hanging them to dry, a vigorous shake, and again when dry and it does seem to help fluff them up a bit. I also use white vinegar for my towels, you don't need much and your towels won't small of vinegar once dry but do feel nice as the vinegar gets all the detergent out x

I stopped using fabric softener years ago when my towels stopped being 'soft' and 'absorbent' when taken out of the drier. Oddly enough, after a few washes to remove any residue left behind, my towels are soft and absorbent once again. And I don't miss the fabric softener in any of my laundry. I've never used vinegar in my laundry, so I don't know if that is a good option or not. When I first learned to do laundry, my mom had a wringer washer and used 2 tubs of clean water for rinses. She also hung the laundry outside to dry unless it was Very Cold outside, then she would use the dryer. We never had any issue with any of our clothes or linens.

I use vinegar in my laundry and it works well with keeping clothes soft too. Add baking soda, especially black clothes, to avoid the pilling and fuzzies. You won’t smell it after it’s been washed! Depending on your washer, I just put it in the section for fabric softener
@tasadasa93632 жыл бұрын
Vinegar works very well as well as a fabric softener and also against hard water and decalcification. I use vinegar essence with 20 to 30 % acid only in a1 to 4 ratio, vinegar to water because it will damage the pipes because of the acid. ( it was written so in my washing machine manual) If you use vinegar with less acid it’s probably not necessary to mix. It does not smell after washing. I have an old bottle filled with the mixture + a few drops essential oil bio quality and use it every time as softener. And as detergent replacement I use one of those washing balls with active charcoal and magnets in it. Nothing else. For stains I use sometimes ox-gall soap before but it’s mostly not necessary.

Haven't had a dryer in 10 years. I use drying lines on doors, and when the weather is nice I'll hang it outside. Saves you so much electricity! Takes a bit longer, though, but that's fine. I've tried the washing with vinegar hack. You don't have any vinegar smell afterwards, but it doesn't soften your towels that much either.

I use white vinegar EVERY time I wash clothes, whether they go in the dryer or get hang dried. Not only does it soften them up, but it makes them smell great for SOOOO long!! You cannot smell vinegar whatsoever. And the vinegar makes the scent of whatever detergent and fabric softener you use stick to your clothes for forever. And when I say forever, I mean I just unpacked my Spring/Summer clothes that have been in a box in my basement since last year and they all smell like I just pulled them out of the dryer. I started using vinegar in my wash because I was told that it’ll take the smell out of wet towels, workout clothes, etc. It definitely does and KEEPS all of your laundry smelling fresh. Even my dirty laundry still smells like I just took it out of the wash. I’m not even joking. I add 1/2 a cup to 1 cup of vinegar to each load of laundry and I cannot do laundry without it. It’s such a game changer and I HIGHLY recommend!!

To solve problem of crunchy towels: 1. Add some bicarb of soda with washing powder 2. Use vinegar for the rinse cycle 3. **This is the most important step** Really shake out each towel before hanging to dry (the crunchiness is the fibres clumping together).

We aren't impressed with white vinegar as fabric softener! My son says he feels like he smells like 'salad' when he wears his clothes! Yuk! lol! Plus, in 2020 we invested in some more upscale appliances and the installer specifically told us to never use vinegar in our machine (we could potentially void the warranty!) He recommends Tide for the laundry detergent and either Bounce or Downy for the fabric softener (we use Bounce in our dryer)
