@@HermioneChantal yes, she is great, but don't let her impatience distract you from finishing things to the point where you are really happy with them. I think you might be like me in the sense that the immediate influence of our loved ones is so loud in our head that we can no longer remember what we really want and think is best. Of course you have to finish the floor even if it takes one more week or two. Christmas will be just as magical if you were to celebrate it on the Russian Christmas day of January 6th!!!!!!!!

@@HermioneChantalI’m pretty sure I’ve seen people mix wood glue and saw dust and then use a broom to fill in the gaps on several construction channels I follow instead of doing it by hand
@marenhumblebee2736
@marenhumblebee2736 11 сағат бұрын
There must be a way to fill the gaps in the floor in some efficient way. Maybe you need to put some new wood into the really bad gaps so the sawdust/glue mix doesn't fall through. Or maybe just get help of a professional for just those two-three rooms for just that one task. Or put vinyl over everything, or put carpet down. But leaving those cracks as drafty as they appear to be seems a recipe for an entire host of consequences down the line😮
@user-sy8tb3yv5p

To fill large gaps between the floorboards you can either use foam-type inserts or thin pieces of wood. Only small gaps can be filled with wood filler or sawdust&glue mix only.

About the floors, to do it by hand filling with a tiny little tool would be probably too much and rhe end desult would be wuite uneven, but what you could possibly do is rent a big sander again, use a finer sanding grid and give all the floors a final sand ( would remove any imperfections but also finish it nicely, then yu could use thst sanding powder with a liquid resin and fill out with plaster finishing tool ( mixture is a consistency of a cream soup and fills the gaps easily), then afterwards give it a quick pass of a sander again and use whatever top coat you are planning to seal and protect the wood. All cracks filled and it is a fay job. It sounds like a lot, but it is using big tools, big ranges etc.

I’ve done a few rooms with the sawdust mixed with pva method. If the gap was big I pushed in lengths of twine, using several twisted together if necessary then I filled it using a filling knife. I wiped off the excess with a wet cloth. A large room should take a few hours. It will shrink down a little and only close inspection will show it’s been filled. I had no problems afterwards. I then used something like Danish oil but this may darken the boards which I know you don’t want to happen.

Very glad your sweet wife reined you in about filling in the gaps in the floorboards lol! I think if it was just a few holes it would make sense, but with a huge span of old flooring like that I don't think the result would be worth the effort unless it's reallllly cold and drafty because of them and would make a difference in your comfort level. Otherwise the gaps are totally 'character' and you should spend your energy and enthusiasm elsewhere. When you mentioned you were considering filling the holes I was like 'oh lord, please don't!' 😅. I think the process would make you miserable and would rather see you two having fun. ❤

Hermione has mad skills and if you want to fill in the cracks I think you should do it before the house gets filled. Also each of have a space that’s completed and where you can go to feel settled. It’s essential when you are moving in.

I love the furniture and I was literally shocked at the prices!!!!!!!! It’s going to look incredible white this team of both of you. An update is we finally left the hospital and since we have to stay near by for all the appointments we are staying with his sister ….. it’s sad she is very mean…… her brother has cancer and she is charging 600.00 a month. I come from a family that if my brothers were sick ( like one that had open heart surgery) I would never charge. So I took the first flight out of Portland and in one hour I was being picked up by my son in California. I have not seen him in 4 years on Christmas. I had to do this for me. My partner wanted this for me as well. So here I am I literally slept the first 2 days. Love you both everything is looking great! Xoxo Susan ❤️❤️🎄🎄🎄🎄🤗

Fingers crossed things get better quickly now that the hospital is behind you 🩷

I used the oak coloured flexible floor filler from Screwfix on my floor in the spare room and landing, but it's nowhere near the scale of these 2 rooms! The pain in my arms from the caulk gun was awful. I've seen people use jute rope to fill big gaps but if they aren't draughty or problematic then Hayley is right, why bother?! It's a huge task, take it from someone who's been there, done that, and needed a deep tissue massage to relieve the pain 😂 If you plan on redecorating the stairs and landing, give it longer than you expect. Im a month in now and had a bit of help but wow, the scale of that project actually completely blew my mind. Why do we do this to ourselves?! ADHD renovating for the win 🎉

I needed to hear this as Hayley had to get a deep tissue massage when we moved into our last apartment from all the lifting of boxes and I think we would be miserable if we landed ourselves in that position again 😂 the caulk gun is such a nightmare I dread to think of using it on the whole floor!! Good luck finishing your project! I don’t know why we do this to ourselves but it’s so worth it in the end 😂

Great decision to not fill in all the cracks in the floor! It would probably make it look more finished so the perfectionist in me could totally understand why you wanted to try it, but at the same time you have to decide if it is worth spending so much time and energy on it.
