my junior year of high school I begged and begged for a kitten.. did all my research.. totally preparing myself.. then on Christmas my mom and brother put a box under the tree.. in the box was a stuffed kitten toy.......... in my room how ever.. was a gerbil... I knew NOTHING about gerbils... I tried to research and kept her for months but she was so mean..... she bit my mom pretty bad... I felt bad to return her but I wasn't prepared it wasn't fair to her! now that I know more I would LOVE to own 2 males.... don't give your kid a pet they are not prepared for....

Hi, I'm glad you made a gerbil video. There is not enough on KZbin! I was wondering why you didn't include more information on substrate. Gerbils need 10+ inches of substrate so they can build proper tunnels and burrows, a natural behavior. It's better to have more substrate so they can dig more. I love how you have such a big tank for them since I see a lot of people with 10-20 gallons. Great video!

the hay isn't enough space for them to burrow in. to have a really happy gerbil you should give them a lot of space to burrow in, instead of things to climb on and hide in.

Gerbil's are considered old after the age of 2, they usually get 3-4 years before passing. Do not expect a gerbil to get 6 years, that would be incredible old. And if your gerbils are fighting and you aren't trying to reintroduce them then don't separate the cage so that they still can interact. This WILL stress them out more then being completely alone, plus the can hurt each other through the bars

Lol I be feeding my gerbils seeds and gerbil food, fruits, veggies, chips, bread, pizza, nuts, orange juice, juice, burrito, rice, Chinese food, etc and he lasted for almost five years(4.5years) and was happy. I still do this to my other gerbils.

i have 2 gerbils currently, but before them i had one gerbil, only because he was the only one left as someone had brought 3, leaving him alone. we took him because we wanted to try and ‘cheer him up’, as my brother said, and we played with him everyday and he got really tame, i really wanted him to get him a friend, but for some reason they kept having girl litters at my pet store, he died last year, but he was my first real pet so I’ll always remember him.

i have two gerbils named woody and smudge... they have a ten gallon tank with a two story tank topper. they are perfectly happy with it which is great (im not trying to prove you wrong). what ive learned is that chain stores (petco, petsmart, etc.) sell only one gender of gerbils per store to decrease accidental breeding. The petco I went to only sold males :)

Dawn Brumbaugh I don't use any base for their food. Everything is fresh. Very few of my animals get packaged food. Since the 3 gerbils are new, I'm not sure how often I'll be cleaning yet.

Yes you can use chinchilla sand. No you cannot use a ferret cage, they will go through the bars or chew their way through plastic

My parents are allowing me to get to gerbils however at the time be store we went to and the closest one only had one gerbil because they were trying to breed the others so I have a friend who works there who's going to let me know ASAP when another male gerbil is available so that way we can go and pick him up. Luckily the enclosure the one that I have now is in has made him happy enough and he has enough to explore to where I hope we can get a second gerbil before he gets too bored and too depressed. I think it'll take a few weeks but we're going to get one ASAP!

Pitbull Lover I've never had gerbils, so I can't tell you about that, but mice are phenomenal pets. Just like rats, they are smart and social towards you. No matter what the Internet tells you though, they smell AWFUL! despite their smell, I loved having them. I had a trio of females, and they fought so I had to separate them... But they were SO sweet to me. My friend had gerbils, they didn't have a special bond with her or me, but they are so soft and fun to hold + smell like nothing. They're desert animals, so they don't drink much water, which means they don't pee much therefore don't smell much, either. Hope I helped!

No your perfectly right. Fancy gerbils (great gerbils) live 2-4 years, fat tailed gerbils live 5+ years (not usually kept as pets and not the type of gerbil you find at pet shops).

I don't have any gerbils right now. But I heard from a lot of people that they sift the sand/dustbath everyday so it's clean again. That way you don't have to use a lot of sand. Also you don't have to clean out their tank as much because they are potty trained.
