Hermit Crab changing shells

A hermit crab will not stay in one shell his or her whole life. As they grow, they'll need a larger shell to live in. They might even change from shell to shell until they stay in one they like.
In this video, you see a hermit crab inspecting a possible new shell before he decides to live in it. Then he pulls itself out of the shell he was in and positions his tail into the new shell and will make a new home for himself.

Toxic / non toxic these painted shells are just uncomfortable for them.. I bought a few the first day & put lots of natural shells. They moved in the natural ones over night. Which is a sign they dislike the other shells.

me and my two other sisters get a hermit crab with a painted shell we didn’t know that these painted shells were toxic but we figured out that it was toxic how we figured out is that we searched up how to take care of a hermit crab and find this video saying painted shells are BAD so we ordered non painted shells and my two sisters hermit crabs went Inside their non painted shells but mine didn’t I thought mine will eventually die because he didn’t go in but over night I just heard these scraping noises and walking noises I ignored it but when I woke up in the day mine was in his shell so I was happy but if they grow they won’t be able to fit in their shells anymore so we ordered bigger shells even though they were still small but just incase and then the next day we got the painted shells and decided to clean the paint off them in a few few minutes the shells were sparkly with no paint on it lol

painted shells aren’t amazing for hermit crabs but if applied correctly it can be okay, because you can use a non toxic weather proof coating that should keep your hermit crabs happy and safe

Even if it's non toxic paint, natural shells allow for oxygen exchange because they are somewhat porous. The paint prevents oxygen exchange except at the shell opening, so it limits the amount of oxygen in the shell. Since the crabs modified gills are inside the shell, it makes it harder for them to breathe.

Doesn’t really matter but if it’s opening face up they’re more likely to be interested in it because they don’t have to work to flip it over first. They tend to kinda stick their legs and head in before they switch to see if they like it first

You are doing a great job and congrats on your crabs! But just keep in mind that they cannot stay in an environment like that for very long. They need an AT LEAST ten gallon tank and very high humidity to breathe. I’ve owned hermit crabs successfully for quite a while, and one of the key factors for a healthy, long living, and active crab is not supporting them to survive, but to THRIVE. Just do some more research on it and find out what to do! They will slowly suffocate without humidity, and they need a sand mixture for the floor because they molt pretty often. If they don’t have that they will try to molt above ground and die. Also if you keep it that way much longer they WILL die. It just takes a while for them to suffocate.

These shells are toxic and hermit crabs need a very specific type of home set up to live comfortably and survive. Please don't buy one for your child or yourself without doing proper research into everything they need. This is a very high maintenance pet and they're very sensitive to toxins and bacteria in many different types of materials. Even the sand you use has to be a certain kind.

@@bea3545 Unfortunately that is how I ended up with hermit crabs. Co-worker had brought her daughters two hermit crabs (the daughter didn't want them anymore) to work hoping that someone would take them, no one did, and she was putting them in the trash. I grabbed the little critter keeper that they were in and got them home and into a 10-gallon tank at home and was off to the pet store to get a decent substrate and a under tank heater. One was missing a leg (it grew back) so that was Legolas, and the bigger one was Aragon, both were really tiny at that time. Four years later, Legolas had a bad shed (for some reason he didn't eat his like he was supposed to) and passed away during his next shed. Aragon was with us for over 10 years and was about the size of the palm of my hand when he passed. They were a lot harder to keep than I thought they would be. Finding a good shell for him when he was bigger was tough, they like a selection to choose from.
