The somewhat disturbing part is that their shells are practically heirloom. They get re-used by younger crabs over and over. You could essentially create your own population of hermit crabs that end up having only metal shells. Edit: I'm in no way or form affiliated with the Hermit Crab Revolutionary Army, or their subsidiaries, and I do not endorse human endowment of nigh-impregnable armor. Thank you.

Fun fact: hermit crabs will actually gather in circles and trade shells with each other. Those who have grown too big for theirs will pass it down to a smaller crab, and that one will pass its shell on too. This means that even when Randy gets too big for his shell, he’ll probably pass it down to another crab who will then become the apex predator of the ecosystem, ruling the seas with an iron claw.

Here’s something that can change your way of life or thinking. This is the most important thing you will hear/read today. If you’ve told one lie, stolen anything, or lusted (which is adultery of the heart), you’ll be found guilty on Judgment Day and end up in Hell. But there’s good news: Though we broke God’s Law, Jesus, the prophesied Messiah, perfectly kept the Law, fulfilling all righteousness. He paid the fine for sinners ( that we could never pay ) by suffering and dying on the cross-absorbing the wrath of God that we deserve. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” Then Jesus rose from the dead and was seen by hundreds of eyewitnesses. Today, repent and trust Jesus; God will grant you forgiveness and the gift of eternal life. God Bless

@ohheyfullmetal5 ай бұрын
I would guess so, yes. And metal is very toxic to hermit crabs, so the metal shell combined with taking them out of the wild and putting them in a crappy setup until they changed shells is a horrific thing to do honestly. This video is incredibly unethical and he did not do any research or just does not care :(
@Sir_Ravenstein5 ай бұрын
It is most of the time, underwater or in shadow, the heat will barely be a problem. It will not just walk in plain sunshine since predators can easily catch it then. About the toxicity, I don't know, but this guy doesn't treat them horrible. Probably, it's not toxic to them when you think about what everything is in the water o.O
@ohheyfullmetal5 ай бұрын
@Sir_Ravenstein he definitely did treat them pretty badly unfortunately, even if he didn't fully intend to 😅 the conditions he put them in during their captivity were not acceptable at all, and taking them out of the wild in the first place was not a good choice. So many hermit crabs are already being taken as part of a horrific trade, and he absolutely risked killing them with the setup; hermit crabs need very specific conditions to survive. Metal is extremely toxic to hermit crabs, so the new shell is worse for them than even the painted ones at beach shops. And these are land hermit crabs, not marine, so they aren't spending a lot of time in the water unless they're soaking. A much better thing he could've done is put out natural shells in areas with hermit crab populations, as tourists take shells and leave them without homes. There's some content creators that have put out over 15,000 shells and have significantly helped them in their natural habitat :)

Fun fact, hermit crabs taught me about mortality. When I was a kid, I found a hermit crab on the beach and kept it for a little while. It was the best little crab, and I loved him. Unfortunately, Hermit Crabs don’t live too too long. When he had finally passed, I think that is the first time I truly understood death. I remember crying about it. These little guys are the best.

Pro tip for the aluminum casting. You want to bake the plaster mold to burn the plastic out, get rid of moisture, and have the mold hot while pouring. You can do this by putting the mold next to the opening to the furnace for a while then put it in for a bit right before you're ready to pour. You want it to heat up slowly but the final temp should be close to the metal. Also scoop the slag off the top of the liquid metal right before pouring.

As a former hermit crab caretaker, Im glad to see that you went with the plating for the outside. Metal would have potentially caused a reaction to the crabs soft body inside the shell, if they stayed in one, because a nice smooth interior is a big thing to them. Its not uncommon for a crab to leave a shell, not like the new one, and then get stranded because another crab took the shell they left. If you ever find a big group of them, you can make some musical chairs happen by putting one or 2 new fresh shells in the middle of them all.

Just a small question, do they develop more muscle tissue from dragging that around (making them stronger) or crabs do have a fixed carry weight?
@bthatguy11812 жыл бұрын
@@chrisca That's a good question that I dont have an answer to. Hermit crabs grow like most other crustaceans, and if they eat well, most will do it every couple months up to a certain size / age, until they get older, and then it can just be once every couple years. (They can live to be 45 if you care for them right) I dont think anyone has ever figured out if hermies get swol from bigger shells.

Tetanus isn't actually associated with metal or rust, beyond sharp rusty metal things tending to also be in dirty spots. The bacteria that cause it are in dirt.

I remember my Mom had a pet Hermit Crab, his name was Apollo. My mom and him had the weirdest bond, literally every time she called his name he came out of his shell. And he never pinched anybody. But he was a cannibal. We found that out after Athena (rip Athena)

Fun fact: if a hermitcrab dies in its shell others will tear it apart to get it out, so that the shell can be reused.
