In this video I discuss Hermit spyware which is being used by the Kazakh, and Syrian governments to spy on their citizens. This spyware was developed and sold to the governments by private companies RCSlab and Tykelab.

2 billion+ people just gained internet access in the last ten years. It really isn't that unbelievable that the average human would fall for this, because the average human is still living with primarily 70s tech. It's easy to brush this off because you'd never fall for it, don't forget about all the people who are privacy infants living in sweet oblivion, ignorant of the danger lurking all around them, ignorant of history that mirrors the present day, ignorant to just how much their data is worth to their government and the corporations in cahoots with their government. We can talk about these things freely, we can warn each other without fear that we'll get disappeared. Do you think the average Kazakh or Syrian has the same luxury?

Most of the viewership on channels like this one would immediately catch on, but I think you vastly underestimate how tiny of a minority we are. This would probably work on between 80-99% of regular users. Governments don't care about people like you or me. Any opsec-conscious individual is already too much of a PITA to get at for most of these low-level threats. But they can cast this net and catch most of the fish in the sea. This includes most criminals BTW. The amount of people getting caught because they had documentation of or communication about what they were up to on their personal social media profile or on some centralized messenger app like WhatsApp is staggering. Having grown up watching Breaking Bad, reading about how IRL criminals are usually caught was a huge disappointment.

This mass surveillance in my opinion boils down to a societal issue. The general population only cares about privacy if it means "zero effort". They don't want to be tracked (like Apples "do not track" app button showed), but they will not do anything about it if the private option takes even slightly more effort then the spyware option. The general public would need to put its foot on the ground and refuse to use non-private products, as well as to show no mercy to any politician and party that supports mass surveillance. As long as that doesn't happen this stuff will keep on happening.

...Unfortunately there are, say very careless individuals, who will say straight to your face: "Yea let them come at me I have nothing to hide, I don't care." You cannot convince these people, believe me I have tried. The others would be "Ok great thanks for scaring me but I'll just continue like I heard nothing." Only way to actually make them reconsider is when something extraordinarily big happens publicly, like the sort of dystopia north korea lives in. Where your freedom doesn't matter. Or what is happening with the social credit scheme in china, but tenfold bigger. I feel at this point that people who do care are suffering from this carelessness of others, since they almost legally are telling people to barge into their life and install monitors everywhere. Or worse, let them control aspects of their life. Sorry for the rant.

*A little correction* The Exploit could only gain *root access* to your Device, if it's *already rooted.* And the spyware is pretty limited without root access. From the Lookout Blog. `These modules, along with the permissions the core apps have, enable Hermit to exploit a rooted device` `If the device is confirmed to be exploitable then it will communicate with the C2 to acquire the files necessary to exploit the device and start its root service. This service will then be used to enable elevated device privileges such as access to accessibility services, notification content, package use state and the ability to ignore battery optimization. Beyond the root service, some of the modules expect or attempt to use root access directly through a su binary. These modules will attempt to modify the shared preferences of the SuperSU app in order to enable the execution of root commands without user interaction.` *Also, it could prompt the user themselves in order to Root their Devices. But unless you have a Phone with Unlocked bootloader it isn't much of a threat* From the Lookout Blog. `If root is not available, the modules may prompt the user to take actions which will accomplish the same goals.` Great video tho, while much of it wasn't that much of a surprise. Still, the idea of shutting your internet service and then prompting you to install a malware is sure quite the elaborate and effective way of Social Engineering.

Same social engineering trick to steal someone's WiFi and then other login creds. Basically you disable your target's WiFi temporarily (easy even without physical access), make a new network with the same ID as the target's legit network, then wait for them to try to log in to your network and the rest is where you get creative. Interesting tradeoff you have to have as an Android user. On one end, don't unlock the bootloader, but be out on security updates after like 2 years of owning the phone. On the other end, unlock your bootloader and put it at risk, but gain security updates for basically as long as you want through AOSP or Lineage based ROMs.

It should be illegal for online data of any kind to get collected without consent, and if they decide to have the company collect that data the company should also tell the users where it is going and where it is being sold if it is being sold, it should also be illegal for data brokers to collect any data of any kind without user consent,

such companies as well as arm factories aso are controlled by the government (or probably eu-parliament) they're only allowed to see their products when they get green light. in other words: the italian/eu-government decided it's a good idea to sell to syria aso.

Is it detectable after the fact through some means? I mean it could be used as evidence in court that a third party has tampered with the device and have used to upload incriminating material to the phone? Of course the defense would need to be aware of the existence of the software to prove it's existence on the device
@davewxc
@davewxc 2 жыл бұрын
First you need to be aware, next you need to be allowed to prove it. That means you need the original device for a counter expertise investigation without it being tampered with. In places like Kazachstan or Syria, this will not be allowed. In the USA they can delay a long time and keep the journalist locked up while they pretend to be investigating. That is even assuming they won't use the full remote access to purge the mallware before they make the arrest so only the planted evidence remains. I'd expect the NSA to do that.

I have been recently getting strange behaviour on my phone. I am not sure if that’s related. I am getting system messages with “provider settings updates” every day several times. I wonder if this can mean something similarly bad, or if it is just German Vodafone being German Vodafone. Would be nice if there is a way to check it somehow…German government likes spying a lot (especially since I am Russian, they are probably afraid I might store rockets to bomb someone at home)

magisk (used to root android phones) generally prompts you to give root permissions to anything requesting them..not sure if they can bypass this unless they install a custom bootloader
@necrobynerton7384

Or somehow manage to install their own version of magisk? but If I remember correctly, you'd have to reboot for that to happen, on addition to having it already installed/flashed. Planned rebooting maybe? I don't know, not very well versed but I feel like it is very much possible to exploit this stuff. There are lots of possibilities, and I am not sure what the tech is on kazakhstan but if there are lots of people with older android phones... I think that is very feasible.
