In the second episode of Hermitcraft season 9, PearlescentMoon delivers a cod present to Grian, expands the starter base on a huge level and invites some fellow Hermits over to fight the ender dragon!

Hi all! I would just like to address a few comments that have mentioned that the choice of name of the creature I have made may be deemed as disrespectful to Native American folklore, and I highly apologise! I wasn't aware it was offensive, as I based my original reference off an illustration/fantasy rendition of the creature seen in various video games/shows. This version is my own adaption of illustrations I've seen and is my own animal in part, as I love to change things around to my own fantasy creation in the end with only a light notion to the inspiration. I would like to rename my creature to an Onyx deer with the intention to educate myself and respect folklore that should not be spoken by me. I certainly meant no ill will and it was completely unintended. Thank you for informing me! Edit: I have also used KZbin studio to remove any mention of the name from the video; however it may take up to a few hours to process.

The Wendigo and Skinwalker are 2 of my favorite Monsters and as someone whose into Folklore, Monsters and Mythology and stuff I always talk about it with my friends even my Native friends (2 of them are Shoshone one of them is Navajo) and they never got offended if I talked about their Folklore. The only thing was one of my friends didn't like talking about Skinwalkers because they were like the equivalent of a Boogeyman to him growing up and he was terrified and didn't want to even say the name. I don't know maybe it depends on the Tribe and the individual since different tribes have different folklore? There's many different takes on Wendigos in media that no one seems to find offensive like the movie Antlers that just came out for example, but I guess for you it's probably safer to change it even if Native American Folklore is only offensive to a very small amount of people.

It was a tale of some professional minecrafters who went on to fight the Ender Dragon and totally killed it soo professionally, the journey also went so well and professional. (this episode is xisuma's and a lot of other hermits' favorite episode.).

As a native American, (and none of the 1/16th on my mothers side stuff either, im born and raised Haudenosaunee, grew up on the stories and everything) I feel that a lot of the controversy around wendigo's is pretty overblown. And that many people are missing the real point. I understand where its all coming from of course, and it is definitely something to consider. The erasing of Native American culture is a really big issue, and I thank you for taking that effort to fix it. But i have wanted to talk about this for a while but never found a good time before this. So i hope you wont mind me saying it here. 😅 The thing is that plenty of other cultures stories and monsters get used and re-interpreted into other forms without any issues. And I dont really think this should be an exception. I feel that doing that would single it out, and make the native stories and mythology seem intimidating or inaccessible to people who would otherwise be interested in learning about it. I think its also generally narrow minded to declare something as irredeemably bad because it isn't completely faithful to its original inspiration. Plenty of people have designed dragons that dont look or act anything like the original scaly beasts of fire and death. But not only does nobody care, in fact its more likely that you will be called unoriginal or boring for staying true to the mythology. The typical skull and antler look that became popular for wendigos is not the same type of monster from the stories, but that doesn't mean it is offensive or destructive. I think its important that people know its not the same, but it really isn't necessary to throw away a perfectly good monster design completely. Its a real waste of good creative material in my opinion. But once again, thank you for taking the time and effort to listen and to be willing to change things. Not everyone would have bothered to address something pointed out by just a handful of comments. Really all that any of us care about with this issue is just making sure that people know it isn't faithful to the actual creature, not raining on creative peoples parade by telling them what they can and cant call a wendigo. Its only when we tell people this and they call us liars and say we dont know our own culture and mythology, or ignore us that it becomes offensive. Awareness is all that is really important. 🙂

So, wanted to ask and am not sure if you can answer but think you have a better input as a native American than a lot of people can give. So, I see a lot of people saying that changing stuff for example here with the antlers is offensive to their culture because it does not represent the original folklore and that is true for sure but can't that be said to all folklore? Like it feels like a lot of people talk like this is a problem from white people but we also do it with our own culture. For example the Norse folklore or the Greek or even Celtic and go on and on. Even history gets twisted for a story or Dragons. Like in HTYD. So, in short, maybe I don't really understand it because whole cultures got destroyed here in Europe and replaced by something else. For example, in my country of Belgium, the culture and religion that was here got destroyed over 100 years because of religion and other factors. Nothing of the original folklore or any stuff survived till this day. We have a new culture that has a lot of influence from the French, Dutch, and cristiandom. In the end, find it strange that European cultures are handled differently by a lot of people and that they did not get destroyed or changed. In the end, my question is do you or people that are Native American see culture like the Norse, Greek, Roman, Celtic and go on different than your own, or are there parallels that can be drawn between them? I hope this is not offensive. It is for sure not meant like that and I am just interested in the feeling people have with different cultures that also have trouble keeping their lore alive and not getting it changed. Also on that note do you think it is possible that it does not happen in the end? Because in the end culture is not set in stone and will change when other elements or introduced. @@eeliejun I’m not really sure, I do not claim to be an expert on this topic, but I think the only real difference between my culture and other ones is numbers. As long as there are lots of people who know the stories, then it’s hard for them to be changed. So for Native Americans, who have lost all our homeland and way of life to invaders, we live in a fragile state where in a single generation all our history could be forgotten. The fear is that if the Native American culture is treated the same way as dragons and fairies, the original might be forgotten because there aren't as many people who care about preserving the original. I think that culture is meant to be changed, not erased. And I always hate to hear about tales like Belgium, of cultures that have been destroyed by bigger, meaner ones. It feels a little too familiar. It's definitely true that the stories and history of Europe are practically indestructible, at least right now, while mine and many others might not be. But despite that, as a person living in this modern world, I am a great lover of all cultures. If for nothing else, than simply because I like humans in general, and find the stories they tell to be fascinating. I believe that every culture has a use in our modern world in one way or the other. Including mine, and the bigger, more popular European ones. For a good message, or a cautionary tale, or even just for fun. So special care should be taken to preserve them. But I also think that sometimes we miss the point and end up saving the wrong parts of culture. The point of a story like the Wendigo is not what the monster looks like, so I have never seen that as being important. Sure, If someone wrote a book called "The True Story of the Wendigo'' and marketed it as being culturally accurate because it used the original form of the monster, but told a slightly different story with a different moral message, that would be destructive to folklore. But as long as the story is the same, I simply don't believe something as insignificant as changing the look of the wendigo would jeopardize anything. I feel that the skull and antlers design is not damaging, it conveys death, desecration and the corruption of the natural order just as well if not better than the original ‘frost zombie’ design. So it hasn't done anything negative to the story, and it has done something positive for our culture by being popular with artists and designers and bringing attention to what was before, a rather obscure story. Look at angels, everyone knows the popular depiction of the winged humans with halos, but you may have also heard about ‘biblically accurate’ angels. The true look of angels as written in the original text was practically erased and replaced by the more iconic version. And yet Christianity did not crumble to ash and disappear. Showing that as long as the important parts are not forgotten, there is nothing to worry about. Nobody suffers, nobody gets hurt. On the other hand, there are examples of times when preserving culture accurately has caused more harm than good. One of the big issues in our modern world is that many people suffer because of old ideas that have been kept alive, when they maybe would have been better off forgotten. I doubt I have to bring up specific examples, I'm sure everyone could think of something that affects them in one way or another. Obvious things like racism that have persisted through the generations. It is undeniable that many people's lives have been ruined by these very old ideas. And as time passes, the world appears to be moving away from these things. And one day the world will surely move on from dragons, or wendigos, and they will fall into obscurity as something the people of the past once cared about. And that is not a bad thing, it is just life. Everything ends one day, what we should strive for is to preserve the parts of our history that help people until it's no longer needed. Tradition is a wonderful thing, but it isn't the only thing. Just look at me, living in a city apartment, typing on a laptop, drinking coffee grown from plants on the other side of the world. This is a far cry from picking berries in the forest like my ancient ancestors, or even life on the reservation, fishing and playing blackjack like my grandparents did, and yet I am no less Native American than they were. Change is not the same thing as destruction, and in fact, I believe it is the opposite. Change is life, change is evolution, stagnation and stillness, that is death. My people must change in order to survive, just as all must do one day.

Especially when there’s a long history of said culture and religion being mocked and persecuted. I will copy and paste a comment I read further down from an actual member of the Anishinaabe tribe that hopefully illustrates why this matter should be taken seriously and handled with respect: “People like my grandfather and his cousins were punished for their beliefs. You can quickly remove player/mob heads by placing a bucket of water on that block (kind of like waterlogging the heads). They should instantly pop off so you don’t have to waste time mining them all by hand.

I'd recommend taking some speed potions with you when End Raiding, it really helps the travel time to find end cites and once you get shulker boxes you don't have to worry about the extra potions clogging up your inventory (other recommendations are obviously putting an anvil, mending and unbreaking books in your ender chest so you can enchant your elytra early)

The best part about hermitcraft having so many members is that because of them uploading so fast individually, collectively all the POVs i wanna watch end up uploading even faster than i actually can watch them! You just don't run out of hermitcraft while a season is active!

This episode was fantastic haha! The ender fight with only wooden swords was a great a idea for the otherwise (normally) overpowered hermits! Despite being a long time hermitcraft fan I skipped S8 so I didn't got to know you Pearl nor Tay, and now that Im watching S9 I gotta say I'm loving both of your content. Thanks you!

Pearl you can actually use a water bucket to get rid of them super fast! If you try to waterlog it, they will just pop off and you collect the water back super fast. Repeat that and all the heads will be gone

Episode 2 and it looks like my prediction that the close quarters would lead to an arms race of building is happening XD every hermit I watch, I've heard some variation of "I only live in [blank], meanwhile everyone else is building giant mansions and organics! I've got to up my game and build a bigger/more impressive base." By the end of the season the spawn village will be a sight to behold... if it isn't by episode 5 XD Also, love the bird alien statue! Very cool!
