The 2 most Joe things showcased in this video are the Sand & Gravel hut at the beginning (floating on nothing but signs and ladders), and that gag piston door. He could build those on hermitcraft today without taking credit for them and everyone would immediately lnow it was his work. Joehills is am experience you can't get elsewhere, and he is very consistent in that. (Even if what he is actually doing changes alot, the ideas could only be Joe's)

"It looks a lot smaller" It's a valid sentiment considering the Elytra didn't exist yet, so scale was the limiting factor early on.
@jasonreed7522
@jasonreed7522 Жыл бұрын
Also shulkers so transporting materials was harder (elytra contributing to this); and the capabilities of redstone farms was alot less (no raid farms, blast chambers, flying machines, or bartering), and enchanting was harder to get good tools. Just overall the difficulty of building huge back then was alot lower. Today we can carry ≈27 double chests of stuff at a time (enderchest and main inventory filled with shulkers, and the offhand for rockets) with an average speed of about 30m/s. Back then it was 1 double chest at a time and only going 8m/s in a minecart or boat. Granted now we have elytra so many builds are most often seem from a flying perspective 30+ blocks off the ground, and back then everyone walked so most builds were judged from the ground at the human perspective scale. Probably the 2 biggest differences between old and new Minecraft are the scale of builds and the available block pallette.

especially considering the world version was somewhere around 1.1 to 1.5. so many limiting factors, like the original 256 block build limit, redstone limitations, farm limitations, lack of unique blocks... the game itself was so much smaller.

It's so fun seeing you going through all the nostalgia of when you were a fan, and getting to relive that and seeing what you remember. And seeing how dramatically HC and MC as a whole had changed over the seasons is just wild. (Extra fun fact for the comments: Mumbo, alongside the other new members of S2, were invited because Joe Hills executed a coup, chose the final seed (out of four) and invited everyone they were considering inviting, since no one was sure how to move forward, and before then it was one guy making the decisions (who had left).)

@@josephb.1425 (I think if you Google "joe hills coup" there's a couple Tumblr links of the clip along with transcriptions.) joe's mentioned it on craft streams with cleo a couple times. After Generik left, no one really wanted to step into the leadership role I believe, so things weren't really finalized. But they had 4 seeds and a list of people to invite for S2. So Joe basically executed a coup, took temporary leadership and unless there was objections he was going to pick the most popular of the four seeds and invite everyone on the list since no one had any concerns over the members on the list. Then he stepped down sdkh

The scale of modern Minecraft is only possible thanks to shulker boxes and elytra making it possible to move so many more items so much faster. And this making larger builds easier to do because you spend less time gathering amd transporting resources. Before them the best you had was a full inventory and ender chest, and either a rail/minecart at 8m/s or at some point a horse which at the very best is just over 14m/s (with mules giving you an extra 15ish slots). In other words move around 1 double chest per trip slowly. And today the typical fastest we move items is a full inventory and enderchest of shulker boxes, worth 27 douboe chest of stuff. While flying with elytra at an average of about 30m/s. Although it is theoretically faster to use a chest boat fo an additional 50% more stuff and moving at 40m/s on normal & packed ice, and 70m/s on blue ice. But people rarely bother doing this for somewhat obvious reasons. The shulker & elytra update revolutionized building because item transportation became so much easier. (It took a little bit to catch on, especially with it taking a bit for rockets to work with elytra, before then people had to shoot themselves with punch bows)

Joe's consistency is just part of the JoeHills Difference™ I started watching Hermitcraft because I was watching your survival series after finding you from your redstone tutorials, and you joined the server soon after I found you. Xisuma was one of the first hermits I started watching from you, and as such, I've only really watched Xisuma's season 1 videos -- so this was a very fun video. A real mixture of familiarity and discovery. Looking back, I have to say Biffa's Bowl feels like it was somewhat prototypical of what would very gradually become today's megabases. Obviously it's not remotely close to the scale of modern bases, but he went for what was a fairly ambitious scale at the time. And while he wouldn't have been the only one doing it, it's just such an iconic design, even now.

As someone who started watching much later in Season 6, I love when Hermits show off old worlds. I also think it's cool when people who weren't actually playing do it, because the Hermits themselves are often too busy to watch everyone else's videos so you get a unique perspective from someone who watched them all.

this showed me that it truly isn’t about how many new blocks, mobs, or gimmicks added into the game that makes it fun, but simply friendship and creativity that truly makes minecraft what it is today. even back then, with how limited everything was, they were still living their best lives, and now, with all the new blocks, it sometimes feels like some youtubers forget that we just want to watch them have fun. not pleasing the viewers, doing things that they think will make the algorithm happy, nor treating it as a job, but simply enjoyment of the creators brings a smile to all of our faces. tl;dr people these days forget to just have fun. it isn’t the creative new ideas people look for on youtube, but just a couple guys hanging out and having fun.

4:15 genuinely the way i feel touring the Hermitcraft worlds I've been a viewer of. I only found you guys at Season 6 but man i love it. Season 7 is for sure my favorite tho. It's wild how different Hermitcraft was way back in the start. So many different names. what you said about the process is something I miss too. the trend in content creation right now seems to be to only show the finished product or just flashes of the in-progress build. No walking through it together, no seeing the creative problem solving... I hope people come back to that soon (*cough* Etho *cough*)

I always love the hermitcraft episodes where we get to see the thought process in building and redstone like you describe in the Xisuma huts. There's something about seeing the full start to finish that always inspires me to build something myself. I understand that the scale of things in the newest seasons make that challenging, and the mega structures getting constructed are inspiring in their own regard. But I do think there's a small emotional piece that's lost in just watching a time lapse of something designed offline.

It's so cool to see how you can just *tell* who built what. Like, ten years ago with probably less than a quarter of the blocks we have now, and you can still tell when a build was made by Keralis or by Joe. Like, they've gotten better throughout the years, and the added blocks really help, but their personality has *always* been in their builds. Furthermore, it's so cool to see how Mumbo has been influenced by these guys. Like, there're so many things I saw in this video that Mumbo remarked about that I can see the effects of in his Seasons 7, 8, and 9 bases. I never even got to watch Season 1 back then, but you can really feel the history and the personality of the HermitCraft server all the way back then, and that's just the coolest thing.

I can also feel the incredible nostalgia those old-style buildings bring with them. I am currently watching the older Hermitcraft series starting at S2 from time to time ... and it is so unfathomably fascinating how this whole fellowship of the hermits developed since the very first episode. Not just regarding the never ending creativity of the hermits, but also regarding their humor, their passion and the whole surrounding community. All of it just puts a constant smile on my face, whenever I watch anything Hermitcraft related as it somewhat reminds me of all the little steps that I undertook or undertake in my creative endeavors that I do in my spare time and that lead to a lot of great memories. I wish you all the best in all upcoming adventures out there! For the connect-4-game: I hope you do not have to scratch your head too much, because the first thing that came to my mind was... how would you split up the colours afterwards when resetting the whole thing? Looking forward to a solution ;-)

I think you should visit it again with Xisuma. I do agree there's quite a number of things that holds up well compared to todays standards. And yes, that is how it feels like when we visit the world. I started to really watch Hermitcraft at S7 and when I visited the world when the download was finally available it was... so much of like trying to figure out what was where, being surprised by the actual scale or locations for things etc... and it was all so cool and amazing.

I spent a little bit of time in the S7 download, and was shocked how easily i got lost in Etho's Monstrosity. From afar it looks like a small base, and in his videos it doesn't seem that complicated. (And i have a good sense of direction) But being there "in person" is a completely different experience, you can litterally get lost in builds you thought you were familiar with.

Generik's challenging base could be replicated by finding a very long cave complex, building your base at the tail end of it, and creating traps along the way to the entrance. it could be a really neat project when you think about it

Okay this is gonna be a slightly weird comment coming from a (pretty much) given up creator. This kind of video, and I don’t know why, makes me want to make servers with my friends and post them as series. Even if they’re unseen, I want to be able to look through our old worlds like this and possibly even have others watch our silly world be made. Idk we could never be hermitcraft but it’s some kind of inspiring to see that someone could be touched so much, especially as he became a great creator himself.

mmh, especially if one of you pass away, the rest of you can get something that you all were part of that you can remind yourself years later. and then cry if you spot a place where one of you was last time they were alive and either said in chat or spoke in discord: ill head to sleep now, see you tomorrow.

This may not be news, but the same way that first season inspired you, YOU inspire others. I started watching you in Season 3 and because of that, I now play Minecraft and use it as a way to spend time with people I could barely interact with otherwise. And after watching your videos, I've slowly expanded to watching the other Hermits too. So thank you. Thank you very much, Mumbo.
