You should add a snowman sign before the snowman area. I imagine the Hermits, on their first time playing, going, "what does that mean", before turning the corner and seeing a hundred snowmen.

19:30 Hey Etho, perhaps the signage would be easier to spot and read if it was suspended over the race course in some places. It seems that some of the signs fly by pretty quickly during the race and signs over head would be closer to the player's visual focus cone.

For the Banners, should probably have a information board at the start so people can know what they mean, even if it is pretty clear better to over explain so there is no confusion and also maybe do a hazard sign to warn for upcoming hazards like the minecarts and snowmen
@Crimzos
@Crimzos Жыл бұрын
Hey Etho! Regarding the banners, I think the only criticism is to make sure they're viewable at night, too! Having redstone lamps that slowly flash around each banner would not only be cool, but also provide some much needed lighting around the track to stop mob spawns. I'd also line the track with redstone torches that you could make flash in an intended direction for the straight aways in case anyone gets turned around

Those signs are nice, although I think the red and white colors make them kinda blend in. You already have a lot of red and white whizzing past you on either side, so those small-ish signs are easy to miss. Something that stands out more, like black on yellow, way be more readable. Also, avoiding using too many signs will make people pay more attention to the ones that are there.

@@theworfer27 Wouldn't they only appear if they're holding in their hand the map they're on? It would be tedious for players to keep swapping especially since there are more than 9 maps, so they'd have to access their inventory, and if there are more than 27 you'd need shulkers etc. Alternatively Etho/Rendog could build mini coloured 'markers' above the track to give the impression of players racing the course when looking at the map

Here is a friendly idea inspired from the old GameCube game, 1080 Avalanche. For one of the shortcuts, have the entrance be behind/though some arrow banners, maybe by hanging the banners on trapdoors or something similar. This way you will be flying down the track, but if you know which sign you can truck though, you end up in a secret path. As for the armor, I am looking forward to seeing a return of the Project Ozone 2 (Kappa mode) bushy eyebrows. The great video and many hours of entertainment you have given us is greatly appreciated. I'll be honest, when you and Ren set out to make this course I was not expecting it to be so huge. I love the track lighting idea so you get a nice overhead view if it's night time which is great because the whole thing is starting to almost feel like a rally race. Those often go into the night and sometimes back into the day again. They are as much about endurance and condition management as they are a race. Also, Jevin built an Abercrombie and Fitch for armor trims. That's hilarious.

Have you considered making pockets of blue/packed Ice as speed boosts that players can aim for if they want to overtake. you could even put them near the edge of the track so you risk crashing for the boost if you aren't careful. Probably a bit late to comment but I think it'd look a bit better to raise the game-starting target block 1m higher, using piston quasi-connectivity to connect it to redstone while still being hidden. A redstone lamp underneath it should update the piston to recieve the QC signal. This is a trick I like to use a lot for hidden redstone inputs!

I was rather delighted to see that Etho's creeper farm used much the same design as what I independently came up with from basic principles (the main difference being the lack of that moss section to pathfind to in my design), especially since Etho is far more experienced in sort of technical stuff than I am (and in Minecraft in general, for that matter). That said, I can confim that a creeper farm of this scale and design does keep up with gunpower production for my rocket needs (plus a surplus), just by running whenever I'm around my base (with the majority of caves in range lit up). Although my design has an option to switch to "looting mode" -- by default creepers take fall damage to bring them down to a one hit kill and are then finished off by the campfire they land on; extinguish the campfire and you can finish them off yourself with a looting sword and gain some xp in the process. Additionally, I trapped a nametagged skeleton on the far side of the player access point for killing creepers, so I can also use the farm to get music discs (with the skeleton's line-of-sight to the player blocked when not in use).

I love the road signs on the racetrack, they’re good for information and look fantastic. The primary issue I see with the signs is that they’re so good at drawing your attention. When you were running through the sign area in the video, I was barely even looking at the track because I was so focused on the signs and they provided enough information. PART of this is because the signs are so much easier to distinguish from the background than the walls of the course are; the red//white blends with the brown mountains, but the big tall signs with white arrows stand out and delineate the bounds of the course so much more easily for the racer that I kinda didn’t need to watch the track to navigate😅

One very important thing in track design is adding banks. They slow down competitors, but they also add a physical component to the track to indicate direction. If you come up to a U-turn with a large perpendicular bank, you know to avoid it and follow the track. In the case of ice-racing, using blue ice may actually be a really fun spin-out type mechanic (perhaps use light blue carpet atop to make them more visible)
@Tech_Marauder
@Tech_Marauder Жыл бұрын
I'd recommend maybe a different color for the signage; the fact that it's red and white and so are the sides of the road makes it harder to quickly discern. Maybe black and yellow would be better. From personal experience with Mario Kart, your courses must be as intuitive to drive as possible. I absolutely hate some of the new tour DLC courses in Mario Kart that have many paths blocked by invisible walls or sharp turns with unclear indications. The fun courses have always been the ones that are very intuitive but still challenging.

Snack Streak 39: I had some choco/almond cookies my neighbor made which were a gift for cutting her grass. This video had so many moments that made me laugh esp the begining. Great job Mr. Ladders

That type of 'running start' is also used often in sailing races! The start boat will fly different flags at 5 minutes remaing, 3 minutes, 1 minute, and then drop the flag at 0. Boats will have a designated person to keep an eye on the flags and count down when the boat has to start its run/build speed to cross the starting line at just the right time. Maybe you could use a similar visual cue here to indicate 30, 15, 5 seconds until the blocks drop?

Your idea for starting the race by building up speed before the line goes down is exactly how Sonic Riders does it, except instead of hitting a wall you get electrocuted, I love it

Found the signs extremely helpful. Previous episodes where you went through the course, I didn’t really have any idea what was coming next past the most recognizable areas. With the signs, I knew exactly what was coming and I think there’s enough time to prepare and react. Also great for hermits who’ve never gone through the track before. Map knowledge still gives an edge but at least you aren’t going through blind on your first few runs. Only needs an area near the start explaining the signs but the designs are easily recognizable, don’t think they need any changing beyond what you went with

Color code the arrows. Green for shallow turns, yellow (or orange) for 90 degree ish and red for 180 degree U turns. You could also use like blue for split of track, that don't really effect travel time and some kind of other color to indicate joker section (risk vs reward thing through village for example)

So the render distance of the banners actually creates a cool effect. It's like you are playing an old arcade racing game where things don't quite load in until your closer. It's kinda neat actually.

The signs are great! They make it easier to follow the track on video too. That said the U-turn sign makes it look like you're going the wrong way

Using banners with the arrows is very smart and it makes it easier for people to react instead of going the wrong way and losing a bunch of time

i think the road signs are GREAT, especially if its a long course. u just know someones going to get turned-around and be super thankful theres a sign so they can achieve last place rather than a DNF :D ur banner manipulation is amazing

The signs are a great addition! They may be easier to stop if they were a different color? The red and white can blend in with the border of the track (although it does keep it on theme)

In F1 races they have a big row of red lights that turn off to signify the race start so you could do something like that for the boat track

You're already a great shot with the bow (Brilliantly named "2 Less Inventory Spots" love it), but velocity lessons sound like lots of fun! And the Boat Race is looking great, I like the idea that you can move around at the start to build up momentum rather than just sitting on the line.

love the signs! such a great idea, and well executed. i think it'll make running the course way more fun as new racers react to the signs :)

For the signs, I think black on yellow would really stand out more. The red is easy to miss if you don't look right at them. Bonus: that's how those signs are IRL, too. Great video, as usual!

The way you set up this skill based race start at about 23:00 is very similar to how it’s done in sonic riders, very cool!

great video, etho! the ice road trucker skit really made me laugh. also, the maps of the race track only just now made me realise how big the track truly is, it's hard to get a good impression of that when we only really get to see it on video when you're traveling on them at extreme speed, so getting to see those maps was very good to get an idea of the actual scope of the track. i also think the signs you made are really helpful. or at least, as a viewer they made me feel more oriented when watching you race around on the track, of course i can't really say what it'd be like if i'd be racing the track myself. they seem very clear to me though, especially if you keep making all the sides/backgrounds of the track very nature-y, because that makes the signs stand out as part of the race instead of part of the scenery. btw, it was really nice to just watch you go through the shopping district and talk a bit about what other hermits have made/have been up to, there is something endearing about it :) i'm very intrigued about the velocity lessons. (also LOL i can't believe you finally discovered the big dark spot that bdubs left many months ago when he was gathering dirt for his mud shop during one of his streams, i'd completely forgotten about that until now.)

Etho using the 3rd person camera to show off his base at the beginning feels like a new thing that he hadn't done before. Love seeing Etho's progression of adding tools to his filming setup. The banner signs are great. However the last one around 19:45 that's a U-turn I didn't see, even when searching for it. Perhaps there's a more visible location for that one. The rest I found were very easy to see, even when not knowing where they would appear. "2 Less Inventory Spots" is a GREAT name for your Bow!
