Nearly two years ago I worked out the chin mount go pro hack for my hero 5. I used the plastic stand thingy it came on in the box, chucked some holes in it and zip ties it to my helmet chin. I got the idea off the mc trailrider when he did a ride with bkxc and when they where setting up their gear I finally got a look of where his camera was mounted. Best spot ever since. Although I must say full face when trying to record epic long rides suck😅. Good videos as always Ben. Thanks

Nice comparison, I much preferred the audio on the Hero 8 and the stabilisation is very impressive, I feel the audio is the biggest difference sounding less muffled. My footage is all done on a old Hero 3 with no gimbal so after about a minuet of watching it induces vomiting, fun though. You put to rest a lingering question I’ve had the last few weeks! Excellent stuff as always. I’m not sure what will qualify to win that 7 (which would be a mint kit enhancement) but I’ll tell you this: that murkin you made for it reminded me of Chewbacca, which I think makes perfect sense as the GoPro really has become the racer’s copilot for learning tracks faster! [insert Wookiee rawr of approval] If I win the 7 (and hopefully the Wookie murkin), I’ll do an edit where i ride with a lego Chewy on my bars so you can see him and insert wookie noises during the sketchy bits. Great review! One of the biggest reasons I upgraded from the 7 to the 8 was the lack of a cage. I could not deal with taking the wind cover off then the cage just to change a battery. That is worth it in my eyes!

from 2:57 to 3:05 if you pause pretty much anywhere and look at the detail of the trees bark, his sleeves or the fork damping adjuster there is a big difference in detail. I cant actually see any more vibration from one to the other streaming but the clarity in that rough section paused is amazing.

Being able to save and change the setting profiles or capture presets and be able to choose them from a list quickly is a definite selling point to the 8. Loved the video ben but I believe the hero seven is still worth it, although it doesn't have the new features the hypersmooth is still amazing and the fact that you can't replace the lens cover on the hero eight is crazy stupid! And you can't forget the hubs it is amazing to hear the hubs because it makes it feel more like we are riding the bike. So if I get the camera i would be the happiest person alive. Very interesting comparison as I fancy upgrading from my Hero 5. Looks like I might be better with the 7. Interesting comment about the flip out mount. I was cautious about that too. Broke my current mount when I crashed in Morzine this year with it on top of my head and it snapped the mount which meant I had to replace the whole cage (which no shop in Morzine had by the way!). I hope the new system is replaceable and cheaper!

Yah didn't talk about the horizon levelling feature in the new hypersmooth which is probably one of the most important features of getting the gopros to gimbal type stability. I look forward to your vid on the GoPro max as well because that horizon levelling feature is wicked good on it.

Would have liked to know if the integrated mounts are made of plastic or metal? Curious to see if they would break in the long run. Also, i think the hero 8 lost the hdmi port right? You have to buy an addon for like 80 bucks if im not mistaken. Also, tons of addons for the camera.(spot light, mic, case) can really make it look like a beast lol Its a shame that they also changed the shape of the lense so filters can no longer fit. And for the no replaceable lense peoblem, i think you can buy a glasse cover for the lense for like 20$ but its still kind of a bad move from gopros part. They should try to make the lives of their customers easier. I guess removing the need for a case is kind of nice for youtubers. The live stream is now able to be streamed at 1080p on the hero 8 unlike the hero 7 black which is at 720p. The video colouring has improved slightly on the hero 8 black which is able to give the GoPro a tiny bit more range with good quality on the video. The is the extra microphone in the front of the camera to be able to capture more sound coming from he front of the GoPro as well as the back. Hyper smooth 2.0 is available on every mode of the GoPro, this includes 240fps slo-mo. There is a added live burst mode which enables you to take a short 3 second video and pick out the frame that you want as a photo. As you may tell I would absolutely love the hero 7 black because at the moment I have a hero 4 session but I can’t afford a gimbal so the footage is really shaky and when I am racing it is really hard for me to see all of my lines on the video, so if I was able to win this I would be so thankful and take really good care of it and put it to good use. P.S: absolutely love your vids Ben, keep up the good work🤟

Yo Cathrovision, The main reason id get the 8 is for the mods, the microphone and light especially. By the way the lens is not replaceable :( even if you send it back to GoPro it would cost more than a new unit anyway, you can get screen protectors but yeah still annoying. You also get less accessories in the box. You can set new presets for favourite settings which actually seems super useful and you can customise onscreen shortcuts (in corners) to change WB, ISO, shutter speed, bit rate etc. nice... timewarp 2.0 with auto speed looks pretty interesting too. the HDR with SuperPhoto is also better but who really takes photos with a GoPro... great vid as always :P

Interesting comparisons. Did i miss details on weight difference? Weight on helmets etc can be quite noticeable especially if it wobbles a bit. Plus I'd of liked to see a video of it mounted to the bike showing the Suspension action. A lot of vibrations and noise to deal with there.

Loved the honesty. I think the 8 is better for using as more of an easy to use cinematography camera with the new time lapse features and hypersmooth boost. I have been thinking about getting either the hero 7 or 8 but still don’t have the money. I am hoping to get one soon as it will hugely improve the videos on my channel. I currently use a 60$ spin off and even I find it unbearable. So I have been relying on my commentary to keep my viewers hooked.

You can also use the 7 or 6 and stabilise in post using ReelSteady, even smoother stabilisation as the software knows what's coming and it still sort of works in low light, while GoPro just turns off.

Really interested in your opinion of the 7 and 8 vs the new MAX. The Rylo has shown you get get gimbal level stabilization out of the 360 camera but lacked the quality that GoPro's usually have. Hopefully the MAX bridges that gap. Great video though. Cheers!

How about how the GPS/telemetry overlay is on the Hero8? It’s a killer feature for mountain biking but it’s truly terrible on my Hero5 black as it cuts out the minute I enter in to any woods. My Garmin watch can still track me all the time so this is an area I’d be real interested to hear if GoPro have managed to up their game.

Another downside of the mount directly to the GoPro rather than the cage means that it can break more easily. To me anything being user fixable is super important, especially if I'm gonna use it while biking

I quite liked this comparison. Effectively saying for normal folk not doing high performance activities such as down hill MTB the hero 7 is more than good enough. At a cost difference of almost £100 I can’t see how the 8 would be worth it at the moment. Only thing worth considering is the door on the 8 vs 7? What I think you missed is that you can (at least in theory, there were some software issues, dunno if fixed) disable all the gopro sound processing that you don't need when running it with a wind cover, to get a lot clearer sound, other than that, apart from a bit improved stabilisation, they are almost identical, hero 7 sounds a bit less muffled imo though.

Instead of attaching the hero can onto the handlebars try fitting it to the front forks in between the top and bottom attachments next to the bike's headset if you've got triple crown forks. That's what I do when I'm the downhill events. More stable looking.

The only comparison we want to see is from Cathro! That was an awesome breakdown, we have been wondering how much the 8 is better as we love the 7, although it crashes all the time, which is a massive pain. Does the 8 need a GoPro microphone dongle like the 7 or can you plug the external mic straight in?

It's annoying that the hypersmooth stops the super wide angle, I ride with a rip off go pro action cam and its super hard to line up a good angle because there's no wide angle lens. Perhaps go pro can fix this with there next go pro! Mabey have an even wider lens so us mountain bikers can get the perfect shot while still using hypersmooth. 🤙🏼🤙🏼

I did a video of the GoPro 8 attached to my handlebars and the footage is great. That said I think having the handlebars in the video is a better POV. The hyper smooth is awesome. Unlike your GoPro, I also don’t have any movement in the mounting.

Hi Ben. Really gid review. I thought I was going to be convinced by stability alone but...I was sceptical on the fingers that are attached, in case they break, but...I would go a different way for B roll and third person. The DJI Osmo mobile 3. It folds. It is way cheaper. You can get adapters to fit a GoPro, works with iPhone and can program for cinematic effects. What brand is your teddy?

If you didn’t have either and the hero4 was the latest camera you had, would you still recommend going for the 7 or would you recommend paying the bit extra for the hero8 with the latest technology?

What's the cost difference in batteries? Is there a battery life difference due to the better stability? I.e does it rinse the battery more?
