I am still on the Hero 4. I would get a newer model but the old 4 just refuses to die. I have done everything I could to kill it short of putting it under a bulldozer, but it laughs at everything I do. When a little fella is that determined to live I can’t bring myself to break its little plastic heart by replacing it. I put my hands over its little silicon ears whenever these new generation GoPro’s are discussed - I don’t want to worry him, or make him feel inadequate and old fashioned. Three cheers to all the Hero 4 users of the world! We are fewer than there was before, but we refuse to go away.

The bad thing with the lens is you can install a aftermarket lens on your own easy, unless you are good at that and want to waste your time with it, I am not fan of distortion, I want no distortion, My phone has distortion too, I hate it. SO I want a proper camera, and a action camera with no distortion lens, So I think I should get the camera that offers this, but maybe there will be a aftermarket option for 8 too if peauproductions is gonna do it, I don't know yet, but for 7 they do. @@PaulThePunter i had a brand new hero7 on a tiny tripod (maybe 40cm) and the tripod fell over because i didnt check the balance. the hero7 hit the ground (some gravel on a hiking path) with the lens first. so after that there were tiny scratches on the lens cover that caused maaany problems with sunlight from the front or side. actually the rest of the footage of that 3 weeks vacation was "scratched" and it really really sucked. back at home i simply ordered a new lens cover and now its all great and "like new" again. since that experience i dont take my hero7 on a vacation without a spare lens cover, just in case. so now with the hero8 having a FIXED lens cover, in my opinion it s a real DISADVANTAGE.... and i dont see the point of buying a "protective case" for the hero8. that makes no sense to me... sorry, just my opinion... :-)

This was a great video, thanks for all the work and the share on this. A couple of catches - GoPro Plus is about $US4.25 a MONTH (not$50) , and it is 78Mega bits / 100 Mega bits per second, not Mega Bytes per second.. For buying your micro SD card, I believe specs are for the raster Read cycle, not the slower Write cycle. 78 Mbits/sec is ~ 10 MegaBytes per second. Adjust your buying specs for cards accordingly. I am working on a more exciting life to justify either the 7 or the 8.

There are two different categories of buyers and their respective points of view. One school asks, is it that much better than my 7 to justify replacing it with the 8? The other school is, someone who has neither, or an even older GoPro, should they buy the 7 or the 8? It sounds like it is not really worth replacing a 7 with an 8 because its not that much better. Improvements are subtle. However, if you have an early model of GoPro and you are thinking about upgrading, then it would be worth investing the extra money to get the latest technology.

Great "real user" review Paul. $5.00/mo (we know what you meant) for "GoPro Insurance" isn't worth it for most GoPro users who may use their GoPro's maybe 20X per year. Regarding dropped frames, mine came from a slow computer. A slower/older computer processing the H.265 footage just isn't "up to speed" during the editing process, at least, for me. I did a rebuild on a VERY LOW PRICED AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1920X (Has 12-cores, 24-threads) as a desktop processor (NOT a great option since I'm sure you use a Laptop for editing on the road), which I picked up for a mere $200 on Amazon, and I get NO dropped frames anymore! As far as upgrading, if one has a Hero 6 and below and uses their GoPro for any Action Sport, I think the Hero 8 IS worth the 25% premium. Just know that for those that do, the H.265 codec in the higher frame rates using stabilization DOES need a good computer processor. Don't forget to use proxy files in whatever Video Editor you use to help your computer as well with editing...DaVinci Resolve is FREE, so if one wants to save money...

One thing to point out that not many videos have: if you have a karma grip and/or a karma drone, the hero 7 is the last camera to be compatible, they haven't released a harness for the hero 8 and it doesnt look like they will since the drone has been discontinued for over 2 years now unfortunately.

Paul, all the “Wobblies” in the stabilization footage is motion blur. At 24FPS the ‘shutter’ is open longer and the frame has motion blur, but then the motion is deleted by stabilizing it, so all that’s left is blur. Basically, cameras need light, and they need more for action. That’s it.

Trust me, not having a removable lens cap is a dealbreaker. One decent scratch, (which is almost inevitable with the nature of mtb) will set u back the cost of an entire new GoPro (Unless u have GoPro plus). Whereas if u have a seven, it a simple cheap fix that doesn't include sending you unit away for review and having to wait for a new one. Besides, if you're really after super smooth footage, no amount of software stabilisation will compare to the results of gimbal such as the GoPro Karma grip which can be chest mounted.

J Rabe The Question is how well does that protector work in water. My guess is that the water will eventually seep in between. Unless it’s a perfect seal which we know it won’t be. Of course if you don’t use it in water for snorkeling, scuba etc that won’t be an issue.

So I already had a hero 7 black, I also want to record rear view whilst on my motorcycle. I looked at the 8, I thought the replaceable lens cover on the 7 looks like a good idea that had been removed. It also seems there are new batteries on the 8, that has a higher discharge rate and permits some functions. The 8 will take the old batteries, but this was then going to make mucking around with 2 different types of battery and chargers more hassle that it was worth. The 7 as you say is a fair bit cheaper than the 8, so I got another 7. But what I really want is a very large sensor camera that works well in very low light levels. I'd be happy with a larger camera, permanently attached to the motorcyle. GoPros on motorcycles at night are terrible.

Great video covering many practical aspects as pertaining to MTN biking. I was using the Hero 4 Black for a while on my chin and thought it was great, but I wanted to upgrade to get better image and some stabilization. So far I've used it a few times and found that it improved in those areas, but I was nervous about losing the audio quality that the H4B was well know for. So far, so good, but I need some more time using it. I bought the protective housing ($50, but it was $25 , but now it makes it bigger than before. I don't like the difficulty of getting to the SD card and the door that can easily come off if you are not careful when changing the battery. The side loading battery is not bad, but the door gets blocked by the mounting clamp bolt so it adds more fumble time to changing the battery. If I have the protective housing on, then it is more work all around to change card/battery, but I'm a bit nervous about messing up the lens without a replaceable cover. I suppose $50/year for Plus insurance is not worth it if you keep the camera more than a year because the insurance and housing cost the same.

Even though I am an editorial portrait and music photographer and watch videos from camera reviewers this video and Loam Rangers puts the camera in similar situations that I am interested in using for my little non work related adventures. Thanks!

@ruffrydazz20324 жыл бұрын
All the hero 8 footage looked like it needed color correction. Hero 7 was a bit over saturated but I thought it looked better for sure. With some processing, the 8 footage could be great but yeah, the man is color blind.

You recommended buying the wind slayer that fits GoPro 3 or 4 for a better fit on the GoPro 8? Did you have to cut the hole to fit the lens? I noticed the 3&4 are round where my GoPro 8 is square? Is this still your recommendation for the best way to reduce wind noise? Or does the one made for the hero 8 work just as good?? Thank you!
@PaulThePunter4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it stretches over just fine. The cut out the back, it’s a way tighter fit. 👌

I just got the 8 but came straight from a 4. So I think it’s good but if I had a 7 probably wouldn’t of upgraded to 8. 👍🏻

Audio quality is terrible if you're using a gopro on a motorcycle and don't have the microphone adapter and mic inside the helmet. The bit that annoys me about the Hero 7 Black, is the USB adapter for the microphone. They really could have had a waterproof (I've seen it on phones) 3.5mm plain old mic/headphone type socket that's been around since I was a child, and I'm just over 50 !

What's your thoughts on the folding mounting brackets? Are they stable or is there a little flex? Is it something to worry about?
@surfingmoose5 жыл бұрын
Curious. Would it not be better to use VirtualDub to tweak the stabilization of the video? This is in reference to the scenes with the cut off handlebars.
@PaulThePunter5 жыл бұрын
As I said, this comparison is for people that aren't going to go and edit for hours afterwards. And the stabilisation is best done in the camera really.
@wayslow5 жыл бұрын
Super time consuming and really unreliable.
@surfingmoose5 жыл бұрын
@@PaulThePunter Yes the original stabilization should be done with the camera but if the camera's focal area is smaller, I would use VirtualDub to do some more stabilization and set the final size smaller. So if I did 4k with the best stabilization setting then I'd down it to UHD giving VirtualDub more area to crop with.
@surfingmoose5 жыл бұрын
@@wayslow I've not found it to be time consuming overall. The only time it is (for me at least) is when setting up processing settings for the first time. After that I'm able to batch run a bunch of vids. Unreliable? Wayslo can you explain more? I'm actually really interested in hearing your experience.

Audio is worse on the 8 as the mic is on the front and the foam is stretched thin on the front. Maybe glue some more foam on the front over the mic? 🤷♂️

I am on my 3rd Hero 7 and it is the worst GoPro I have ever had it freezes and locks the screen and I have had to remove the battery to switch it off! If you plug an external power source in that creates a whole lot of other problems as well. My 3, 4 and 5 are loads better and I have now got a DJI Osmo Action and DJI Pocket and both are reliable and give very good quality.

i went for the h7black...black friday deal, bundle for 280 bucks. i preferre the frame case and the changeable lense, just in case...better than throwing h8 into the bin after a crash! image quality to h8 is so small i doubt anyone can tell when watching yt. for a pro with video editing skills it's no deal tweaking h7 footage. ontop i don't realy trust the h8 mount at all. this thing it made to break not like the h7 frame which can take a real beating..anyway great vid...best wishes

I am struggling with audio on Hero 8. It's okayish at best and I really hate hearing myself breathing. Not only that - I think the audio isn't a separated stereo at all - the only microphones U found are one one side and below the lens, so in the chinmount / flipped orientation the right channel is very biased. Love the tip for wind slayer from Hero 4, gotta try that. Either that or the / with velcro fuzzy stuff Phil Kmetz is suggesting.
@PaulThePunter5 жыл бұрын
Maybe! But I just noticed a mic on the mount itself today. Perhaps this is what you are trying to describe. But yeah, get the windslayer and it’ll be way better.

You can have 4K 60 Hypersmooth on H7. Not sure what firmware you are running on your H7 but there was a bug where when you selected 4K 60, it said Hypersmooth was disabled, however, it was just a bug that was fixed in a firmware update.

24fps in a game , means you lose, if its a fps game it's kill shot, cus you cant see the other player coming before he or she shoots you, if its a car game, similar thing, before frames update, there already is a car too close to you and you did not see he move, still don't bother playing, 24fps with fast car on Nürburgring, only done that in a sim not in real life, too afraid of real thing, what an awful experience. ok now I am taking it to the extremes, but if it's slow pace stuff 24 fps or 30 can look decent, but if it's fast pace stuff like race car, people running, moving, it does not. but of course in a video it's not that big of a deal, but I can still tell. So if people say it does not matter, and use 24 fps not 60 I feel that's wrong, my answer is it depends, but for action I always shoot 60fps.

Issue I find with the gopro's is the price in Australia.. Like A Gopro Hero8 Black is $599, Hero 7 Black is $529 - $599, Hero 6 black $549, Hero5 black $442.. I mean from 6-8 are pretty much the same prices and 5 is only about $100 less.. The gopro is great but the prices are stupid.. You would think the 6, 7 would be a huge difference in price compared to the 8..
