I always thought it was funny that they got so upset when they learned when ozpin hid the truth from them and then decided to do the same thing ozpin done to them to ironwood. I don't remember who said it or where i read it but they really could have used the lamp to ask how Salem planned to bring down atlas.

As a last act of trying to redeem himself, yeah, I had expected that too given his personality. It's my main beef with how Roosterteeth handled Ironwood's turn out of left field when he was getting better and just hard nosedived toward antagonist that couldn't be reasoned with when all he wanted was to protect Atlas and it's people...Including Mantle. Why the hell would he choose to shoot down drone driven ships meant to pick up civilians when them being transported to Atlas would FORCE RWBY to a negotiating table in exchange for their safety by his men? No reason to stop them from doing it if none of his men was expected to pick them up and transport them on their own. It would put everyone on Atlas and needing HIS forces again to keep them safe. From there he could just play keep away with the vault until they was willing to agree to his plan. But nope, Roosteeth thought he should threaten Mantle with a bomb....Really? Now his plan was bad, but they had no better plans to counter with beyond hold out and hope for reinforcement to arrive from the rest of the world. A plan doomed to fail, even if they tried it. Not that sending people to Vacuo was much better, the one country that hates Atlasians the most given they was at war with each other in the great war and they're life styles are complete opposites. If they hated Raven, they should've known going to Vacuo is a bad idea as it's teeming with people who have a survival of the fittest mentality there.

More time in the spotlight, I agree. Was his plan to turn the city into an ark and abandon the planet a good one, not at all. He caved in to his fear and gave up. Ironwood. The Tin man who had a heart. They painted most of his screen time, as a trusting and trustworthy man. With 2 powerful postions, as a General and Head master of Atlas. Ironwood didn't come across as an arrogant individual. Instead. He was overly cautious. And when he heard of a potential threat. He took it seriously. He was confident that a strong show of force would deter any and all threats. After Beacon fell. Ozpin disappeared. And his robotic army was turn against him. He must have truly felt the strain. But even with all that happened. Ironwood remembered all those who were affected. He even sent Yang, who lost her arm to Adam, during the attack. A robotic arm. Literally giving her a way over her physical impairment. Each step from the Embargo-fixing amity. To tell Remnant the truth of Salem. Was him trying to prepare Atlas for the inevitable in fighting/ riots. He was struggling. But getting by. Twin inc. "Then our protagonists show up."

Certainly this song is very good, James Ironwood is one of my favorite characters in the entire RWBY Show, and I really feel that the focus given to the beginning of Volume 2 and 3 was necessary to show us what he was really capable of. . being willing to go to the battlefield and analyze a dangerous environment and still willing to Fight. It's a shame it ended the way it did, it's not that I'm bothered by his death or his fall to villainy (although I admit that turning bad does make me angry), it's just that I'm disappointed by the fact that Rosterteeh did this to a man. character as good as Ironwood was. Since I feel that if he had been given more time in battle he would have been given a more dignified ending taking into account that his character is made so that the viewer sees him as a Hero who would do whatever is necessary for his people. Possibly Ironwood would be remembered by many as a Great Hero not only for Atlas but for all of Remnant. I think... that if Ironwood had been given more time on screen and they had changed the bad ending with his death for a more appropriate ending for his character, we would agree that James Ironwood is the character with the greatest evolution and tragedy until the end.

Gotta love the tragedy of his character... He always wanted to do the right thing even if that affected him both mentally and physically, but he DECIDED to shut down his empathy for others and as such made his judgement incredibly flawed to make the though calls... I don't know if it's HIM who made Atlas more militaristic or if it's Atlas who made him who he is, probably a bit from both, but that mindset is what drove him far from those who called him friend...

Love him or hate him, Ironwood was a fascinating character, and I enjoyed most of his run. Tragic and dangerous, yet sympathetic, as many of the best antiheros/ fallen heroes are. I still enjoyed Volume 8, but the lack of effort in writing Ironwood after Volume 7 was definitely its' weakest point, and the flawed pacing made his final descent into darkness in "Ultimatum" seem rushed and extreme. I fully expected him to die (and made my peace with his not being redeemed in the process- we can always hope, but as in life, there is never a guarantee), but I hope he is not forgotten, given that Oz was willing to remember that slimeball Lionheart after YEARS of exposed corruption... With this, they could say that team RWBY was always in the right, and that they were always more capable than the actual general, when the group couldn’t even keep itself together and was running on pure hypocrisy (going from “no more secrets” to constantly lying to Ironwood but immediately trusting complete strangers and someone who literally contributed to the death of many). I believe the change in Ironwoods character was due to his semblance. Basically he has a will that can't be broken, but the drawback is that it's able to almost highjack his brain in order for him to complete the task he's set out to do, even if he changes his mind about it. The more intense his desire is to complete a task, the higher chance his semblance has at taking over. If his mind is focused one set goal, everything else sort of becomes obsolete or less important, like maintaining relationships with people. He didn't get the ending he deserved, and I wish his sudden change in character was actually explained by someone in the show. Like Qrow for example likely could have she'd some light on it.

You are right though there is one small detail. He simply can't change the mind once semblance activates. He gets tunel vision to ensure task is completed and seen through to the end. And his mind can't even be changed at that point.

I hear a lot of people supporting Ironwood's choice to lift Atlas which was his assumption to escape from Salem. But, forget she came riding on a giant whale with natural gravity dust on it. It would've a temporary solution at best, seeing as Salem can fly too and is pretty much immortal.

Fighting head on wasn’t much better for that exact reasons, plus it doesn’t matter if you save the entire world if Salem gets her hands on the relics: the world ends and she wins, everything else doesn’t matter

Such a shame it had to be the way it was with Ironwood. Deep down I think he was a good person with good intentions that was ruined by the sheer weight placed on his shoulders. Of course, nothing excuses his horrible actions to Mantle and to Atlas and he's definitely not the only one with the weight of the world placed on his shoulders, but he is one who's cracked under it.

Well put! The "Sheer Weight" of it all was expertly symbolized in my eyes when Atlas fell onto Mantle. The fact he was directly in the middle of the two (being at the bottom of Atlas) only adds to the symbolism.

@@atlesianphoenix The name of the kingdom also adds to the symbolism. In Greek mythology, Atlas is constantly holding up the sky on his shoulders.

He's a tragic hero at best; he left the poor of mantle to suffer and actively directed resources away rom them (which ruined things since that's how Cinder go in); he also left the rest of the world to starve

Volume 9 spoilers! “Ironwood” asking Ruby if she ever stopped to consider if she’d just made everything worse, even with the best intentions, was just rich coming from him. Then again, that’s why the attack worked so well. All of Neo’s illusions picked apart Ruby’s sanity in ways that would only work coming from them.

Ironwoods plan would have worked though, just not in the way he thought. The people in Atlas would have died due to lack of air and supplies, but salam would have been checkmated out of one of the relics.
