Yes, I think so too - although I wonder if you've seen the Herod in the original, 1973 movie!? There's a lot more physicality and energy in this rendition, and that keeps it interesting!

Furthermore, because Judas's role--like Herod's--is written for a high tenor, it is simple to cast with a woman actress. Finally, the crux of the show is the stark contrast between Judas and Jesus, and I think that contrast would be much more evident if they weren't both played by men.

Absolute best version I've ever seen or heard. The timing and singing are so bad in all the others. That includes the original album, film versions, etc. Though I do understand the timing thing to an extent; the lyrics were kind of crammed in to fit the music. It's a rather awkward song to sing, I think.

Herod is written in the ALW musical as an effeminate man... his race is unimportant. He is supposed to be played as camp and outrageous, because the King James version of the Bible depicts him as an emasculated effete... Its always helpful to know a little something about history when commenting...

It's been done before, and more than once. Every community theater and high school production I've ever heard of used a female Judas, and the one I saw turned out great. (And by the way, the character is named "Judas," not "Judus.")
